Wow, remarkably similar situation to my ex girlfriend's 4 year old purebred Shepherd. She had obtained the animal from a breeder a few years before we ever started a relationship.

The dog was the same way with me as the "new" boyfriend, I was very on edge at first but I have had prior dog training experience (friends dogs) plus the attraction of wowing the new person in my life was there.

The animal's real problem was nervous prey-driven energy. She was always walking around the house whining. In the car was the same way except with the occasional lunge bark passing cyclists and joggers. She scared the living hell out of some of them I'm sure.

I immediately set to work however walking the dog alone at least every other day, and experimenting with things to dull her energy like bully sticks and bones. Also tons of fetch. She always pulled on leash but seemed to do better with males than females. Kids were a no go and remained so.

I could go on and on about the issues we had with this dog but the parameters were the same. Couldn't really be taken off leash or trusted around other dogs, the elderly or children. Eventually like you, we got a second dog - a Shepherd mix puppy of 12 weeks that is mine. He grew to be only 5 lbs under her weight. Here's a photo: https://imgur.com/a/BTe9TlQ

From then on our aggressive dog chilled out a little bit, but not as much as we'd hoped. At least feeding aggression wasn't an issue though.

We eventually bought a house together and immediately we had an issue with the dog again as the new neighbor decided to come over unannounced with cookies. When the front door was opened to greet the neighbor, the dog pushed through my girlfriend and the door and gave what I call "inspection nips" to the lower part of a mostly able 30 year old's buttocks. She laughed it off, it didn't break the skin, but a month later we had animal control at our doorstep over the incident. Our neighbor went to the ER "to be safe."

When animal control came over virtually the SAME THING happened as we had not yet established routines and locations for the animals at the new house. This time we were cited. The dog was put on a list and had to be registered with the county at that point. Another incident and they advised she'd be on the "dangerous dogs list" for four years and it would be reviewed by committee to put her down depending on the incident going forward.

Anyways, sorry to go on and on about my story but things didn't change for us until I started working with a training collar. By that I mean one that beeps, vibrates, and shocks with different intensity levels. This is the system I currently use - it is the third and best one I have used thus far.

I use these because there's something about the sound and the vibrate that immediately gets the animal's attention. They do not like the vibrating sensation on the neck and as such will respect and learn with repeated and similar commands for certain behavior choices they make. There are certain behaviors with our dog that would command a shock: jumping on people, lunging at other dogs, darting off into the woods without returning, growling at people or the mailman etc.

Basically, after they've even been shocked one time on the lowest setting, they immediately are aware of what you consider bad behavior. After that, you utilize the audible tone and vibration as "early warnings" to temper behavior.

And believe me, I'm confident in using this training tool and recommending it. 90% of people would never think to "shock" (it's really more like a pinch) their dog - but they also could never know truly what it's like dealing with these types of high energy, prey driven animals. Animals that fundamentally change your life.

That said, it wasn't easy but with stern male discipline and the use of the training collars she was eventually able to be walked in public on lead, and even interact with other dogs - albeit always with the training collar on as a reminder to her.

I mean you're right, we too felt like she needed a ranch and acres upon acres to live in. We also weren't willing to give up our dog though and give up. Re-homing a difficult animal is also nigh impossible. Also consider too, with age her bad behavior will naturally subside.

Best of luck!
