Make sure you've decorated the house in some special way - either a sign, or a paper decoration spelling her name, or lovely flowers. There are lots of little crafts.

Plan out your first few meals so you don't have to worry about shopping or planning the first few together (she'll probably be tired from traveling).

Have a few small things planned to do the first days, little things that might help you connect, like a picnic in a park, a few movies to watch, or something you can even make together (like a craft, those are great ice-breakers).

You might even want to buy one of those books that have conversation starters like the If... series or even a game.

All the best to you!

Camp Director and parent here. I would not advise bringing up questions about home, especially right before bedtime. That opens you up to dealing with homesickness, even in teens. Also, as a former camper, respect that some of these kids might not want to think about or discuss their home lives while they are at camp.

I used to do Mad Libs or read to my campers when I was a unit leader. However, I also sometimes used a book series called "If..." --there are a bunch of them and they contain nothing but lists of great conversation-starting questions. Not fluffy.

Sure thing

Sorry about that, I should have linked to the books earlier. that one is the first one and the others are probably on that page somewhere. They will be in the "self help" or "self improvement" sections of your nearest bookstore.

they are essentially books filled with questions you ask friends in a group setting, or in a car ride or when you're just bored. The first 2 are just random questions. Each group of questions are sometimes themed with eachother. Like a few pages will be food related while the next after that may be more spiritual or political. The third book is relationship questions, but they can be asked out of a relationship too. They have other books "would you rather" and "how far will you go" but the IF books are the best ones.

Sure! As mentioned, I do think the book I linked before is the best one, but here are some others that I personally own:

Maybe pick up a copy of "If..." for some writing prompts (or actually you can get a ton of them from the "Look Inside" on Amazon). Examples from their back cover:

  • If you could spend one whole night alone with anyone in history, whom would you choose?
  • If you could suddenly possess an extraordinary talent in one of the arts, which would you like it to be?
  • If you could commit one crime without being caught, what crime would you commit?
  • If your plane were about to crash and you had time to write one quick note, to whom would you write, and what would you say?
  • If you could run any single company, institution, or organization in the world, which would you choose?
