There are various ways to make the black color that we associate with blacksmithing. I know of five methods but there may be more.

  1. Flat Black paint - super simple, can be applied with a brush or a spray can.
  2. Stove Black - works very similar to shoe polish and about as durable, but it will survive the high temperatures that will destroy paint.
  3. Beeswax - apply while the piece is still hot enough to melt the wax, but not so hot that the wax burns.
  4. Beeswax and turpentine - equal parts beeswax and turpentine melted into a paste. Apply cold. Very smelly. Outdoor use only.
  5. Boiled linseed oil - apply while the piece is very hot but no longer glowing red. Color ranges from black to a glossy brown, depending on temperature. Makes lots of smelly smoke. Outdoor use only.
