Here, get her one of these

no edges and 5 extra pieces

Actually. That's probably a challenge puzzle, the finished product doesn't have an edge or corner pieces, but they put extra in the box to make things difficult. Like this https://www.amazon.com/Impossible-750-Piece-Cow-Country-Puzzle/dp/B00005S0J5

Impossibles - http://www.amazon.com/Impossible-750-Piece-Cow-Country-Puzzle/dp/B00005S0J5 has no edges, and includes extra pieces that do not even fit the puzzle.

Having puzzles cut the same way is not unheard of. There are instances where it happens. The OP did say they were identical, so this assumption is perfectly valid.

As for being easy to locate a piece in the finished puzzle, that doesn't seem too far fetched. Take a new piece and hold it over the finished puzzle. Locate the general area the piece looks like it belongs in based on the colours/patterns of the piece and the picture of the other puzzle. A 500 piece puzzle is about 22 or 23 pieces square. If you can narrow down your search to one eighth of the original puzzle right away based on colour (e.g. blue sky piece as opposed to green grass), you only have to scan an area about 8x8. This can be done pretty quickly. When you find the matching piece, place the new piece directly on top. Repeat with all the pieces until you have finished the second puzzle directly on top of the first.

This obviously doesn't work for some puzzles, but I would consider these edge cases. It should work for most scenic puzzles.

Why do my assumptions bother you so much?

I have 2 of these! The are called impossibles IIRC. One of them was a bunch of golf clubs and the other was fishes. They are digital patterns designed to mess with you (as if the rest was not enough).

EDIT: Found one on amazon!
