Just to clarify, my intent with the "equipped" remark wasn't to say that people can't change the way they interpret/interact with reality. It was mostly to imply that religion has enough inertia and a strong enough hold on most people that they simply won't change.

I'm happy to spend a portion of my time and energy trying to explain my perspective to theists, but I could easily become consumed in an impossible endeavor if I underestimated the pull that religion has on people.

I'm pretty also pretty convinced (perhaps unjustifiably so) that humans, while awesome, are often overmatched when it comes to the demands of modern day life. It might sound pessimistic but I think it's a more realistic view of our species and the price we pay for idealizing our place in the cosmos. This book is coming up in my reading queue so we'll see.
