The Nobel winning neuroscientist Eric Kandel wrote a semi-autobiogrpahy that surveys the history of neuroscience called In Search of Memory. Its very well written and simple to understand by a layperson who may not have much familiarity with the field.

The author (Erik Kandel) is a nobel prize winner who did research on the physiology of memory. His research was in snails, but a lot of the same principles probably apply to other animals.
