Feeding pre-school kids is hard. We've had to work really hard with my 4y/o to get him to not throw fits at the table. Two things that have really helped are:

  • Book: It's Not About the Broccoli by Dina Rose
  • Website: Kid's Eat in Color

Both have ideas for how to get kids to eat more foods. They both use the same basic idea of the division labor at meal times.

Parents decide: When to eat, What is served

Kids decide: What to eat, How much to eat

So, you pick the meal/snack times (and they should happen at the same time every day and only during those times as much as possible) and decide what is on the table. The kid gets to pick what they eat (from what you are offering) and how much they eat. You should make sure to always offer something they like on the table (so sounds like rice will be in regular rotation, as will eggs), but otherwise offer a variety of foods.

So if for dinner of have rice, beans, spinach, and bread, the kids may choose to only eat rice or rice and bread. That's fine. Don't make them clean their plate. Don't make them eat just one bite of spinach to get more rice. Just let them eat. Then for the next meal, offer different things. It is hard to change your mindset about wanting them to eat some of everything or all or everything, but it is worth it. You give them some control and then gradually work them into eating different things. You can do a multi vitamin or something else in the mean time to help them meet their nutrition needs, but unless a doctor has concerns about her weights/heights/development, you are probably fine. You might also want to seek out a pediatric dietician if you can find one for help with the nutrition side of thigns while her diet is so restricted. I highly recommend the book to start with and then use the website to keep adding foods.

The overall idea is that you don't want to make meals a battle--that's when the stubborn kicks in and they won't eat anything. Also, since it sounds like she is undergoing a huge change, give her some time to settle in. Kid's act out when they have big life changes.

I'm not a mom yet (still hanging out over in /r/BabyBumps) but somewhere else on Reddit a parent recommended a book called "It's Not About the Broccoli" that I immediately purchased and read. I found it to be helpful in preparing me in the event of a picky/slow/poor eater, and it gave lots of interesting explanations and suggestions. When my friend was having issues getting her 5-year old to eat, I lent it to her. She reported that she's seeing progress by implementing some of the suggestions, like having her son help with the preparation of meals. Hope this helps!
