A Java book that I always recommend to people learning Java is Ivor Horton's Beginning Java.

It goes into huge amounts of detail and covers everything you need to know to start programming in Java. As a result, it is quite freaking heavy :D

It also has exercises on each topic, which I highly recommend.

Once you've learnt the basics of Java, learning Android development will be much easier. I don't recommend trying to learn both Java and Android dev at the same time.

Good luck!

You will probably start running into roadblocks if you lack programming experience. These tutorials are quite good for learning java:

This is a good book also:

I have Beginning Java. It's very comprehensive, but geared towards beginners. So it can get dry at times. Great reference for later on.

Only downside is, it's not one of those learn java fast books. It covers everything properly and thoroughly.
Also pretty cheap for such a large book.
