Jaguars History According to Harp
1993: To the dismay of many Jacksonville is awarded the 30th NFL franchise.
They are put into the AFC North with the Steelers, Bengals, Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens. (Side note - I miss this division)
1994: Tom Coughlin, head coach of Boston College, is tagged as the first head coach. Owner Wayne Weaver didn't hire a GM. Coughlin spent his first year organizing his staff, scouting, and preparing.
A note on Tom Coughlin - that guy was...is...crazy disciplined. If you're an older fan you probably have heard the stories of the player fines for not being to meetings 5 minutes early. 3 minutes early? That's a fine!
With the Jaguars, and later the Giants, Coughlin comes in like a crazed dictator hell bent on efficiency and TOTAL DISCIPLINE! Then he starts to back it off...a bit... Hell, he may even bring donuts on "Players' Saturday" and freak everyone out with "what the hell is he doing here..."
1995: The Jaguars first roster is built and the team goes 4-12.
1996: The Miracle Season
This should be it's own book (hey, it is and I'm reading it right now).
The Jaguars start the season 4-7, and then run off 7 straight wins all the way to the AFC Championship game before losing to the Patriots 20-6. One of the best NFL Playoff Games of all time, the "Jagwads" (Woody Paige) defeated John Elway and the Super Bowl favorite Denver Broncos. Full Game on Youtube
1997 and 1998: Playoffs both years, and in 1998 the Jaguars won the NFC North.
1999: The pinnacle of the Jaguars history. The Jaguars finish 14-2 (two losses to the Titans - f* the Titans). The Jaguars demolish Miami 62-7 (finishing the careers of Dan Marino and Jimmy Johnson). Then the f'ing Titans and Jeff Fisher's crappy mustache beat the Jaguars a third time. Then those a**s go and are a yard short of tying up the super bowl.
A few seasons later it's revealed Gregg Williams, Satan's c* stain, had a copy of the Jaguars' playbook. Don't know if it's true, but I tell everyone I know they're dirty f'ing cheaters. F the Titans.
2000 - 2002: End of Coughlin I (Salary Cap Purgatory)
Tom Coughlin brought in some good free agents early, but the Jaguars were run over by the Salary Cap Train. They had to let many of their core players go (Keenan McCardell). The Houston Texans enter the league, and they bail out the Jaguars by taking should-be-hall-of-famer Tony Boselli and his cap figure off their hands. The Jaguars end up with losing records for 3 straight seasons, and the mob called for Tom Coughlin's head.
After 2002 Wayne Weaver fired Tom Coughlin and hired Jack Del Rio. He also brings in James "Shack" Harris as vice president for player personnel.
