Definitely look into a Headphone + Attachable Mic Combo

I recommend the JVC HARX900's With a Zalman mic that you can clip on the headphones

If you do end up pushing your budget, I don't really recommend the G35's like the other guy (No offense, really) I do on the other hand recommend the Audio Technica AD-700's, if you get these for gaming they will last you a lifetime, they are built very well too, I love Audio-Technica for that

u/ebol4anthr4x · 6 pointsr/AskGames

No, do not buy surround sound headsets, even if you play CSS. I spent around $100 for my pair of 5.1 surround sound headphones (Tritton was the brand -- the audio division of Mad Catz), and while they were a very blatant step up from the shitty generic Logitech headsets I'd used in the past, they are not even close to the quality you get when you just purchase a normal pair of high-quality headphones, especially considering how much more expensive they were.

Immediately after going through two different pairs of surround sound headsets, I decided to just buy normal headphones and a separate microphone for voice chat. I currently use a JVC HARX900 and a Zalman mic, which will cost you about $70 altogether, but it's well worth it in my opinion. The sound quality is fantastic, and most FPS games are made well enough that you can get distinguish sound coming from different directions, even with stereo headphones.

Surround sound headphones are entirely unnecessary, and I wish someone had been there to tell me that before I bought mine.

As a side note, listening to music on stereo headphones vs. a surround sound headset will make no difference, as pretty much 99% of music is 2 channel anyway, so having 5 speakers makes no difference. Yes, it can be upmixed to 5.1, but if you just buy a good pair of stereo headphones, it will sound equal to, if not better, than the surround sound headphones.

These ones off of Amazon. One of the reviewers practically nutted writing his review and they were like 40 bucks off

I'll be the first to admit that I shop for headphones based on reviews on Amazon. I know nothing about headphones.

That said, this pair has served me very well. They do look pretty dorky though. I almost got the Koss PortaPros that someone else mentioned, but I wanted the kind that go fully over my ear.

Here's a listing of headphones with good reviews

u/299152595 · 3 pointsr/headphones

I recommend JVC RX900 to everyone at this price point. I had Koss Pro DJ100's before them and the RX900's blow them away. I also prefer them to the Audio-Technica ES7's I had previously, which were $90ish when I bought them.

I have never heard the monoprice cans though, so I can't offer any comparison there.

u/LiquidDetergent · 3 pointsr/buildapc

Buy this or this for a mic.

Headsets do not deliver good audio quality for their price. At a sub $100 price range you might not be able to tell the difference but a decent pair of headphones with an attachable mic is going to deliver superior quality.

At your price range I recommend the JVC HARX900s and the ATH M30s. I would also look at the Sony MDR-V6s but they're out of your budget.

u/SearingPhoenix · 3 pointsr/buildapc

40 dollar headphones are actually... not that bad... if you buy right.

Now, I would put segmentation of headphones like so:

0-20 dollars: The "I'm probably going to break these, so I'm not going to spend much money," segment. If you're not buying them for risky usage scenarios, spend more money.

$30-50: Here's where you'll start seeing your money doing some work. Sony makes some fantastic headphones in this range. Something like the Sony MDR7506, Sony MDR-V55/BRs, JVC HARX700s, HARX 900s, or Audio Technica ATH-M30s.

$100-200: You aren't going to see significant gains over $50 cans until you break the $100 dollar mark. For instance, the ATH-M50s or Sennheiser 558s are (supposedly) fantastic. I personally have a pair of V-Moda Crossfade LP2s that give me fantastic audio quality to my ears.

Above that, I haven't done a whole lot of research. I believe segmentation hits again and you won't see a good gain until you start spending around 250-300 for studio-grade stuff, then another step up to 500+ for high-end studio and audiophile-grade equipment, but that's just kind of what I remember seeing.

In that recent video it looked like he was wearing these: http://www.amazon.com/JVC-HARX900-High-Grade-Full-Size-Headphone/dp/B0013P3ZOE

Which if you read the reviews sound like they are fucking good and they are only $60.

I remember I used to get an audiophile magazine at my apt from the person who lived there before, I laughed my ass off at the fact that people pay literally $1000, for a 3 foot long gold plated MONSTER cable, which probably performs like 3% better than a regular $10 cable.

check this bullshit out $1824.00 for ONE 2meter long cable.

If you are smart you can find headphones like the JVC HARX900 that perform probably like 2% worse than the $600 pair. Actually based on what I know about engineering, its likely that there are $600 headphones which perform worse. Headphones seem to be very tricky to engineer, it seems to have a lot to do with getting lucky with a design that works, and it also depends on your personal preference of what you like to hear, so even a $600 pair may sound shitty if it doesn't have enough bass or too much bass or some other weird problem.

oh yeah and whenever possible avoid listening to stuff on youtube, since youtube has really shitty audio compression.

u/hobofats · 3 pointsr/hardware

at that price range you would get more bang for your buck getting an actual studio quality headset and a clip on mic, like the JVC HARX900 with a zalman mic. I personally use the HA-RX700, which is almost half the price.

"gaming" headsets are a marketing gimmick.

u/odd_affiliate_link · 2 pointsr/funny

It took me years debating which (over-the-ear) headphones to buy before getting sick of that and breaking down and buying a set of HARX900s. They were cheap enough that I wouldn't feel stupid if I bought them and wasn't completely satisfied with the sound (unlike the other cans I was considering).

Obviously the HARX700/900 are nowhere near portable, but I think that when/if I decide to get a set of IEMs I will likely get the S4 since they are so well-regarded for the price.

I think I just can't pull the trigger on >$100 headphones without hearing them first. Headphones are such a subjective taste (IMO).

Edit: If anyone is wondering, the HARX900s are awesome.

u/Doctor_Teh · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

Read the reviews of the two you mentioned. They both sound superb, they just look a bit out of my price range unfortunately.

Any knowledge of this one?

Just to add to the discussion. I own some JVC RX900s, and I picked up these DJ Pro100's. They came in yesterday and I'm returning them today.

Everyone's ears are different, but they didn't come close to my JVCs in terms of sound that I enjoy.

u/DrInMyMind · 2 pointsr/InternetIsBeautiful

So i bought these JVC HARX900. I am very pleased after the sound test considering the price.

u/mpa1212 · 2 pointsr/headphones

I'm looking for some combination of headphones and microphone, around $100 total. So far I am leaning towards a JVC HARX900 with a ModMic 4.0 when it comes out. While I don't need any specific setup (full headset, desktop mic, removable mic, etc...), I do have a mechanical keyboard. As I do a large amount of voice chat, the noise from the keyboard causes me to lean away from a desktop mic. Required to work with Linux.

Sound requirements: All around (Gaming, music, videos/films, and voice).

Budget: Around $100(including microphone), no more than $120 including shipping and tax.

Source: Desktop computer

Isolation: Not necessary, but would like some. Mostly used at home, which can get a little bit noisy.

Type: Full sized. A little preference towards closed. Significant preference towards over ear.

Tonal balance: All around.

Past Headphones:Nothing of note.

Music: Variety of "older" music (~60's-80's). Preferably the headphones are more jack-of-all-trades.

Location:US

While I do have pretty good ears at discerning quality, I don't have any "specialty", so would prefer more all-around quality.

Most important qualities:Linux compatibility, some combination of microphone and headphones, little interference from mechanical keyboard.

Thanks,

--Mpa

Slightly more expensive, but what do you think about the [HARX900] ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0013P3ZOE/ref=pd_aw_sbs_4?pi=SL500_SS115)? There's also the harx700 which is cheaper. Do they sound better/worse than the HA-S?

u/paravis · 1 pointr/headphones

Budget: 200-300

Source: Zune first Gen, 80 GB. Note 2

Requirements for Isolation: doubt I'll get any dancing type earclip type set of cans that are isolated but yes I prefer isolation.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? Yes, but not much.

Preferred Type of Headphone: Full sized, closed

Preferred tonal balance: Balanced

Past headphones: Koss Ksc75, Darth Beyer Dt770s 80 ohms, Shure SRH440 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DP1FTU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), JVC HARX900 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013P3ZOE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Preferred Music: EDM trap right now. Then 90s gangsta rap (2pac, bone thugs, ice cube) LOVE IT. Dubstep, Hard Rock, indie. Mainly bass heavy trap tho. Future bass as well.
What would you like to improve on from your set-up? Sounds very good with some power to the bass, doesn't look too bad, and stays on my fuckin ears... I dance HARD. It's gloriously therapeutic, but not when I step on the chord and break my $400 pair of cans that cost me $200 to fix last time.

Also sony has good products that are probably your best bet for finding in retail stores. The XB and MDR series is solid. You really can't go wrong with sony. Guitar center will have a good selection as well. This price range is very competitive so you should be safe sticking to these brands along with sennheiser.

JVC HARX900 - IMO the hidden gem of the headphone world. They are amazing especially for the price. Makes BF3 sound incredible. I went back and forth between more expensive headphones before discovering these and I am very glad I purchased them.

u/ctrocks · 1 pointr/hardware

I am wearing some JVC headphones right now. I think they are comfy, even for a long period of time, and my wife and kids are always complaining that I can't hear them, even when the sound is not cranked up. They are not too expensive either.

u/mkestrada · 1 pointr/Advice

good cans on a budget, the only area they really fall behind is the bass, but great quality otherwise.

For a few dollars more, better bass(or so I'm told), and a bit more stylish for use around town!

u/hubwub · 1 pointr/gaming

I currently own a pair of JVC HARX900. They are closed headphones and you would need to buy a mic like a Blue Snowball. It works for playing CS:GO.

u/c0da · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Amazon price

I slightly modded them (removed some felt covering the drivers) which gives it a clearer, less bass heavy sound. Course they still work great with bass (I often practice electric bass with these 'phones) simply because they were so bass heavy to begin with heh.

EDIT: I'll upload a pic of them just so you know how big they are lol.

u/Intergalactic_hooker · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

These are some pretty great entry-level headphones.

If you're in doubt, visit /r/headphones, they may know a lot more than I do as they're audiophiles, they take that stuff veeeeeeeery seriously

u/bigbishounen · 1 pointr/PUBATTLEGROUNDS

Sorry for being so blunt about it. Upon re-reading my previous post I realize I was being rude. My apologies.

To honestly answer your question, pretty much any headsets that are "game" anything are going to be crap, regardless of how much you spent. This is because you are buying something that looks cool and has a mic, not something designed for super-accurate audio reproduction. To get proper audio quality, you need dedicated audiophile headphones without a built-in mic.

Just to save time (and save you money) I will recommend what I use. (NOTE: My headphones are considered "entry level" for audiophiles. Basically, the best bang for the buck. You can get WAY better ones than these, but be prepared to spend big bucks for them.)

I use JVC HARX 900 headphones. These are basically studio-grade "monitor" headphones. Many recording studios use these for musicians and technicians to monitor performances. As such they have very good audio reproduction qualities even at very low volumes. Here's an Amazon link for you:

https://www.amazon.com/JVC-HARX900-High-Grade-Full-Size-Headphone/dp/B0013P3ZOE?SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duckduckgo-d-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B0013P3ZOE

If you can, pick up one of these and try them out. You will immediately hear the difference.

u/athrix · 1 pointr/gamingpc

I've previously owned a wide variety of headsets and in the end have given up on them.

  • Cheaper logitech sets: broke in various ways

  • Razer carcharias: mic started cutting out, then left earcup, then the thin cord split

  • Tritton set (can't remember which, $50): Cracked bridge with light use

  • The G930s burned batteries so fast, then after a few months the right earcup started cutting out.

Overall the headsets build quality was low, across all the brands. Finally decided on a pair of JVC HARX-900 cans and this Zalman clip-on mic. The wires can be annoying but the difference in sound/build quality was pretty staggering. I started hearing details in games that I never heard before, on any headset, for me it added a new level of detail to games. I've been using this pair for about a year and had no issues at all. Total cost is about $65 + shipping, wish I would have just done that from the start =(

As far as your cord fetish, the JVC cans have a pretty thick cord that would be very difficult to pinch. The mic is thin but it's only $9 so if you have to buy one a year I still think you're coming out on the winning side.
u/AwesomeAsian · 1 pointr/headphones

The JVC HARX900 should do it for you. It has good sound stage and fits your budget. If you don't mind going over your budget a bit and want a neutral signature headphone which also has good sound stage, I would recommend the Jaycar Pro Monitor headphones. They are around $70 with shipping if you live in the USA

Jvc ha-rx 900 is what I use, $56 on amazon

The jvc head phones if you google them are not only rated higher than the other suggestions here but also are an over the ear headphone.

I use an asus dgx soundcard for even better sound, the 7.1 simulated is pretty amazing.

JVC Harx700 + Zalman mic. Runs about $45, and much better quality than any "gaming headset".
There is a more expensive ($60) JVC Harx900 headset if you want to get something a little more pricey.

If you want to get fancy you can get some snakeskin cabling, some heatshrink, and a lighter and semi-permanently combine the mic cable to the headphone cable.

While you are at it a decent soundcard will do wonders if you are using an onboard card. You can get a decent entry level card for about $40. Just like a standalone mic is better than a headset mic. A standalone sound card is miles ahead of an onboard card in the vast majority of cases.

Any and all. I'm using this with these headphone and this mic. Still won't work.

I also have TB's. I'm pretty sure they won't work because the cable is only a 3 conductor cable not 4.

u/dan945 · 0 pointsr/hardware

I have a pair of JVC HA-RX900s that I adore. I got these recently (with a cheap Logitech mic) and rarely use my 2.1 system anymore. The bass is great, but not overpowering and they have a very crisp mid/high. I'm not an audiophile per say, but I love listening to jazz and play a lot of video games. From Battlefield 3 to Starcraft 2, these cans are seriously phenomenal. They have a lot of padding and are very comfortable for long gaming sessions (I've had them on for upwards of 3 hours before).

I got them for around $75, they are on Amazon for about $68 right now. Hope this mini review helps!
