I use the same single pouch backpack I actually took to kindergarten. But I don't carry anything really important/valuable; gloves, hand sanitizer, tissues, water, army men for /r/greendawn, the usual.

Well, yeah I guess, on a scale of all items you would normally carry. But it def wouldn't be something I would rely on to stop a deadly threat. If you carry a metal pen for that reason, and if your department allows it, I would highly suggest a fixed blade knife to throw on your belt like this one:
