Maybe get a plate that is even larger than a few inches, or you can get this

Or you could just use a big kitchen plate and put sand or dirt in it if you have to. Sounds like you might be having a wind problem also. But I've never had a problem like you are having and I"ve tried the little bowls. I hope that helps!
