For library books, most of the Kobo readers support Overdrive in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

The Android readers from Boox and Likebook do too, as well as the Libby app which is Overdrive on steroids. There may be other Android apps for other library lending that I'm unaware of.

For PDFs, you'll want the biggest screen you can afford (the price goes up fast with size). Up to a point. Personally, I think 13.3" is too big. I think 10" is the sweet spot for complex PDFs to avoid a lot of zooming and scrolling. If you are just reading simple text, 8" is good too.

I really like the "flexibility" of the Android based readers (I've got three Boox models: the N96ML, the Note, and the Nova Pro). If you're on a budget, the Boox Poke Pro is basically the same price as the similar Kindle Paperwhite (and a much more "open" system). The Kindle does have more internal storage and is waterproof, but that's it.

I'm not sure. It's this one, however

Regarding the Home screen, I may just do that. Whatever purpose it's supposed to serve is completely lost on me.

The cover art thing..I mean, that might work? But I don't understand why it doesn't just work as-is. I shouldn't have to sideload books I bought on Amazon to get cover art working (which isn't broken on my other kindles), ya know? Is this a known problem with Paperwhites?
