Virtual Machines I'm currently running.

Splunk - Receives my FW, DNS, Snort, and OSSEC logs. I have dashboards to filter this data.

Snorby - Also receives my Snort logs. I like this a little better than Splunk as I can view packet contents.

OSSEC - I used this for file integrity and endpoint monitoring on my servers and desktop. Functions as a host based IDS.

Nessus - I use this every once in a while to see if there are any open holes. Otherwise, I just use nmap and iptables to close everything off.

Unifi Controller - for managing my AP.

My VMs, configs, and files are backed up to a HDD I keep offline. I'm thinking about adding a NAS into the mix for somewhere around 200-400 dollars. Low energy consumption preferably if anyone had any recommendations. :)

That's not true. Compare the specs and benchmarks

Google around and find conflicting results if you want, but I can't find anything to suggest that the bait & switch version of the v300 meets its advertised spec of 450/450MB/s or 85/130MB/s compressible / incompressible.

Superdrive hard drive caddy: $9.70

120GB SSD: $60

USB Superdrive enclosure: $14

All in all, $84 to extend the life of your $2k laptop by a few more years. Well worth it in my opinion. Also if you're feeling adventurous, enable a fusion drive on your new dual-drive Mac.

BTW, the physical SSD and caddy option are very easy- just follow the take-apart guide on ifixit.com. It takes about one drink's worth of time to do.

Have fun!

I mean, I don't think you will notice a difference. I'm not an SSD enthusiast or anything, but I just bought this one(Kingston v300, 120GB - $90) and it's working great. I'd rather take a good deal with an SSD, then worry too much about performance loss.

My opinion, get the Kingston. I don't think the difference in speed is that big of a factor.

nope, removed my super drive and put my old HDD into a caddy that takes the place of where the super drive was. I think it's a fairly common upgrade for the unibody mb / mbp

Here is the drive i purchased, Kingston 120gb for a good price. Not the best SSD but it's compatible and cheap

Here is the caddy i purchased that took the place of my superdrive. I went for cheap over quality built and for that I kind of regret it. It didn't mount in all three places like the superdrive did, and I had to slightly modify it. If i were to do it again, I'd go OWC or Optibay route.

Nevertheless, I'm incredibly happy with it! it took a little bit of maneuvering to get back to normal with prioritizing where applications and downloads went, but all in all it's great now. I cloned my drive instead of doing a clean install, a corner i cut that i might go back and re-do later.

If it is a brand that you have heard of (including what you listed), you should be good! Just be sure to check reviews before making your purchase. I'm a Samsung SSD fan - they are what I own and what has always worked but I do know that there are plenty of others.

Kingston has a cheap (but solid) 120GB SSD on sale right now that you might want to look into!

u/GooseSteps · 2 pointsr/ImSavingUpForThis

Back a couple years ago I might've had to if they had put an SSD in. But SSDs have come a long way and are considerably cheaper than they were previously. Take a look at this, the Amazon price history of the 120gb SSD currently in my rig I made back in 2012. It's interesting stuff and hopefully as the technology gets even cheaper we can start seeing it as the standard.

u/Prime09 · 2 pointsr/HomeServer

I've heard generally good things about Kingsington SSDs but you're gonna run out of space on that 30GB way too fast.

At least spend the extra £5 and get 4x the storage (120 GB) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00A1ZTZOG/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?qid=1450887459&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=ssd+drive&dpPl=1&dpID=41ZfguPSNoL&ref=plSrch

Also any modern reputable drive will handle wear just fine. There was an SSD torture test sticks a year or so ago and they said unless you are rewriting the full capacity of the disk as fast as possible (many times per day), any brand name SSD should last the better part of a decade.

Edit: found the article: http://techreport.com/review/27909/the-ssd-endurance-experiment-theyre-all-dead

Amazon has it for the same as well. If you order it from Staples and have (or buy on ebay or the like) a 25 off 75 coupon after order have the customer service rep at staples match the amazon price. Should net you the drive then for $60 plus tax...

Any recommendations for a 250+GB SSD, keeping cost in mind? I currently have this SSD with my OS and BF4 on it.

You could probably go even cheaper than that: the games you list have low requirements and could run off of an AMD APU processor, but you might not get ultra gfx. Which I assume is part of the point of modding these games, so I put a newish GPU in the build. LMK what you think!

Hi!

Firstly, i'm a Hadron Air owner, and I have to say you will love the case. It's gorgeous, small, (relatively) easy to build in and the PSU is good quality. The only thing is basically no cable management options, but you can cable tie them up at the top/bottom not too badly.

Info about case

The slot loading bay is only compatible with some specific drive models, so I'd download a copy of a manual and check that you choose one that will fit for sure. Also, are you SURE you need one? I thought I would with my first build but I've literally never used it, installing windows/linux is easier with a USB drive anyway.

It's a perfectly reasonable time to pull the trigger. There's no confirmed impending releases so far that will make a huge difference to anything in a standard build. The rumoured gtx 960 is most likely coming out in the next few months, and would probably cost about $30-50 more than your current selection. It will be very power efficient and will fit nicely in the case (which can fit up to a reference titan, very impressed), so you COULD wait and see if it was announced soon, but I wouldn't really bother unless you want to stretch the budget or play AAA titles at 60fps on max, the 750ti is perfectly capable of playing at 40-50 on max or 60 on med/high on most games

As for the laptop drive, you could buy a cheap drive cage adaptor

If your laptop drive is big enough, I would recommend scrapping the WD drive and buying a 120gb SSD for your OS and most used programs. I consider a SSD essential for a modern build to make the PC seem as smooth and responsive as possible, and always recommend them in any build over about a $500 budget

As always, please feel free to PM me any questions or just reply to this comment

u/foshizzle97 · 2 pointsr/computers

I'm not an expert or anything but I did just buy my first SSD the other day. SSDs are 2.5" and I had to get a [3.5" to 2.5" adapter] (http://www.amazon.com/Notebook-Drive-Mounting-Bracket-Adapter/dp/B00AYJFXIQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1449335558&sr=1-1&keywords=2.5%22+To+3.5%22+Bay+SSD+HDD+Notebook+Hard+Disk+Drive+Metal+Black+Mounting+Bracket+Adapter+Tray+Kit). I'm pretty sure the adapters are universal for all cases too.

They use SATA cables just like HDDs. So you'll need to make sure you have an extra port on your motherboard, a SATA cable and and a SATA power cable off of your power supply.

Finally, I don't think it matters what kind of motherboard you have. I got the Kingston 120GB SSD and for $45 I got a much faster computer! If anyone can confirm what I've said that'd be great because I'm not 100% myself.

u/iregret · 2 pointsr/mac

I went with this one because it was cheap. Unbelievable how much faster it is. Mine is a 2006 mac mini.

You could always put the main OS on the SSD, and buy an external USB enclosure. Put your Mac's factory hard drive in the enclosure and install OSX on your new SSD. Then plug in your factory HD to USB.

u/umop3p1sdn · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I honestly don't know why anyone is recommending a mechanical hard drive. You should get him a 120gb ssd for about $60; they are not hard to find. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A1ZTZOG/?tag=pcpapi-20 would be perfect. Your son will probably not need a 1 tb hard drive and if he does that should be a secondary drive/purchase to avoid having to reinstall windows on the ssd. The ssd will run circles around the hdd options and has more than enough space for os + games as long as he doesn't have them in the double digits. And again, that is an easy upgrade to buy another HDD

GET HIM A SSD NOT A MECHANICAL HARD DRIVE.

u/benwallace23 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I would possibly suggest you could save some money on the power supply there... something like 600w is more than enough for this build, and even if you want gold certified its still going to save you at least £40.

Personally I really like the Bitfenix Prodigy as a Mini ITX case, but that is more down to your personal preference.

Final suggestion, perhaps pick up a cheap SSD such as this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Technology-120GB-Solid-2-5-inch/dp/B00A1ZTZOG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417700201&sr=8-1&keywords=120gb+ssd to put your base programs on and vastly improve the speed.

Best of luck, feel free to ask me for any other advice!

u/dialkjddfas4dl · 2 pointsr/buildapc

It's typical to have an SSD just for the OS/common programs and have an HDD for everything else. Even for a budget build I'd say that's doable.

Here's a 120 gig SSD for $50. And here's a 1 TB HDD for $50. Something like that, maybe?

u/dabsfordaze · 2 pointsr/hardwareswap

Again, thank you! :)

i'm piggybacking on this - i want to buy this item from amazon. Which forwarding company do you recommend? It's only 145g weight and very tiny.

u/ahriik · 1 pointr/techsupport

Ok, so I made a Linux live disc, removed the laptop hard drive, and booted from the disc. Ran completely fine, no crashes or freezes or anything.

Guess its time for a replacement. I was thinking about putting one of these in it, since I've been hankering to try out an SSD, and I really don't a whole lot of space in this machine. Would recommend something different, though, if I wanted to go the SSD route?

u/dukeofpizza · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

If you have the money to spend, really its a personal choice. If you are okay playing games on medium with a solid 60 fps for the next few years and you want to spend less than on a console, that build you just posted is great. If you have 800-900 dollars, and you are okay paying that kind of money to play games at 1080p 60fps on ultra, then for me personally its 100 percent worth it. I have a build very similar to what you posted in the OP and I haven't regretted it for a single second, but I am 24 year old living on my own with a high enough salary for disposable income. All the hardware you have posted is good, it really just depends what your needs are and if you have the means to afford it.

But seriously, get a SSD no matter what build you end up with. Even a cheap one, like this is 10x faster than a traditional drive. I put one in every computer I build, even budget builds. You will cold boot into windows in less than 10 seconds. I can't even remember what it was like before my SSD.

Here's what I've decided on. Let me know what you think.

u/NeoProHex · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

Here ya go.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/KDzPTH

I could probably get it down lower if you needed but I spent more on the motherboard so you have 4 ram slots, meaning that if you use the 1 8gb stick now, in the future you can get up to 32. I could probably get this PC down to closer to 400 if I changed the graphics card to a 460 and lowered Mobo. Let me know if you want that.

The 1050 is a very capable little card. It can run any new games at medium - high settings with decent framerates. Csgo will be no problem.

I got you a 1 TB mechanical hard drive for your games and OS. I tried to fit in an SSD but I just couldn't.

If you don't know,

Ssd - no moving parts, faster, but more expensive.

Hard drive - moving parts, slower, but way cheaper.

I added around 20 pounds (I think its pounds, I'm American so not sure) of wiggle room so if you wanted, you could spring for a 240gb sad if you want your entire experience to be faster, then add a hard drive later for bulk storage.

Here's a link to dad's

Your power supply is more than you need since the 970 is so efficient. A lot of people like to buy more than they need though just so they have the ability to expand later. Up to you. Even the 500 watt linked below is more than you need, you could most likely do ok on 400 watts.

You should be good except I would highly advise you to get a SSD if you can afford it. It would do wonders for any system. Here is a (Semi) cheap SSD. http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-2-5-Inch-SV300S37A-120G/dp/B00A1ZTZOG/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1381573186&sr=1-4

u/Shtatic · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'm looking into adding a SSD to my build. I read somewhere on here that brand name and such play an important role in performance. I'm hoping to spend <$100 on a 120gb SSD. What are the reccomended ones? Is this a strong SSD?

u/yayoirc · 1 pointr/computers

If you change the CPU like others mention it won't make much of a difference however you will have the oppportunity to clean things up and reapply new thermal compound I always use this stuff. For 8 bucks though it's not a big loss. You can run benchmark before and after to see.

Also consider you need a 64 bit OS when increasing the memory size beyond 3 GB. I assume you were loading it with four modules, you could get these instead with faster timings for gaming for about the same price. The heatsinks look cool, and in my opinion matter but others say they don't do much!

Another piece of advice is if you are faced with upgrading the BIOS to accept the chip or memory, do not flash it from an operating system.

A cheap SSD for the OS and two games would also do justice. You can use your existing drive for storage.

u/kraM1t · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

You said you're real low on money, get this to tide you over until you can afford a 1TB HDD, it'll be enough for Windows and programs.

It looks good for the price, my only thought would be that if you could squeeze out some money for a [ SSD ] ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A1ZTZOGref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_4Znryb01JKHK0 ) it would help when loading this game. Also upping your memory to 16gb ( 2 x 4gb sticks ) would also help.

Looks like it's a bit cheaper right now on Amazon. Not the fastest SSD out there, though for peak sequential reads at least the bottleneck is going to be the Sata II interface in the computer anyway. Looks like the Crucial MX100 is just a few dollars cheaper, too, at a similar capacity.

u/OK_Eric · 1 pointr/apple

You can keep the SSD once you do upgrade though. Here's a 120GB one for $57. Not too bad at all and definitely with the upgrade, even if you won't have the mac for that much longer.

u/eXTremeGaming · 1 pointr/feedthebeast

I would rather go with this since my 1 mSATA slot is used by a wireless card and normal SATA SSDs are faster anyway. But idk if having it on an SSD actually help with my enormous CPU and RAM usage.

u/PotaPancake · 1 pointr/buildapc

Nice picks! Here's what I would change, this will give you the headroom to upgrade overtime!

Toss the CPU cooler, the stock cooler is just fine.

Toss the Motherboard for a Z97 motherboard, this will allow you to overclock this CPU and anything up to an i7. link

Toss the HDD for an SSD unless you need the space. The performance gained will be huge, it's worth it. link

Toss the DVD drive unless you plan on watching DVDs, everything is digital including whatever OS you decide to install.

As far as GPUs go wait to look around when you're ready to buy. Any recommendations made will be outdated by that time frame. I'd also go 50/50 on just getting 4GB of 1333 or 1600 ram for now, a decent stick will cost around $35-$40.

u/Aetharus · 1 pointr/buildapc

My advice would be buy a smaller SSD. For example, this 120gb SSD.
Also, especially if you plan to overclock, you might be getting close to that 550 watt PSU. I went for a 750 watt PSU on a pretty similar build.

u/zeraden · 1 pointr/buildapc

It's probably the Kingston v300, like this one

u/Not_a_normal · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace
u/JimmehWho · 1 pointr/buildapc

Is there any good or bad choices when it comes to buying a SSD? Like what should i be looking in to? This looks like a good choice and a very fair price. Any that you would recommend? I could save up around $100 more for the budget.

u/letsgoiowa · 1 pointr/PcMasterRaceBuilds

Celeron or Pentium because of future upgradeabilty/compatibility, better CPU performance (just enough to avoid being a pain), and because that CPU is 3 years outdated already. $60 gets you a full 120GB, which might actually be enough as a single drive for some users.

Toshiba drives seem alright, but they're largely untested compared to WD and Seagate. I'll stick with them because those companies are proven to me, and are the same price.

Never get a case/PSU combo. Both will end up being worse quality, and you should never skimp on your PSU. CX430 is good.

Disc drives aren't necessary because we've got USB DVD drives lying around for a Windows disc install, but they might be handy. Since /r/softwareswap is no longer viable, $90 a key is the reality.

u/alexrlex · 1 pointr/thinkpad

Luckily I have the same computer with a solid state drive. Try this one.

u/Dustboonies · 1 pointr/buildapc

Something cheap, either a 60 or 128gb ssd like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-SSDNow-SV300S37A-120G/dp/B00A1ZTZOG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1456872510&sr=8-3&keywords=60gb+ssd
if you can afford it as well, I would keep the HDD in your build as a game drive and just use the SSD for boot times and smaller applications.

u/samiradel · 1 pointr/buildapc

You don't really need that aftermarket cpu heatsink, as well as the thermal spread; the stock cooler will do just fine if you don't want to go crazy on overclocking. You could drop the SSD if cost is seriously an issue, or go with this

I've remade the build a little here Add another 4gb stick when you get more money, be sure to get the exact one, otherwise weird things can happen. Also, try to find some way to get Windows for free (will not mention how). Maybe use the code of another computer you have (idk why, but works with Windows 7). Otherwise you need to go with Linux, as it's free.

If you really need to save money that badly, seriously look out for deals here and there, you could save like 50-100 dollars down the road. If you're not satisfied with the performance of a 750ti (I've heard these things can handle skyrim maxed at 60fps, for example) then save up some more money for that 270 you wanted. That SSD I mentioned earlier will also cost you a couple weeks (depending on how you get money) of saving up.

Your other option is going FM2. Probably an A10 since it's the most powerful. You could always bring it down a notch with this one and save maybe $100 but you wanted to play BF4 medium soo... Also that psu is garbage, don't trust it for upgrades down the line, if you ever want to upgrade, buy a case you like, and a power supply that will allow that (450-550 should be good).

Note: I don't know the exact performance capabilities of this hardware as I have not personally built these machines, but I'm confident that you will be quite happy with the results you will gain.

EDIT: I live in Canada so you may have to pay only $6 for those systems.

u/Reanimations · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

My Kingston SSD has been doing me well, so I can recommend Kingston as a trustworthy brand.

Newegg and Amazon. Amazon doesn't have a listing for a 120GB SSD unless you want to buy from third-party sellers, which I never do. The 240GB model is $90, and I would recommend having 240GB as 120GB fills up fast.

u/TheWoodchuck · 1 pointr/LinusTechTips

If you're looking for something zippy, but cheap, and riding the edge of system stability, take a look at Kingston 120GB SSDs which are like $45US at Amazon. Slap 2 of those in RAID-0 to make a 240GB OS drive, and then stick in a large 4-6TB drive for mass storage with whatever of your budget is left over. If you're feeling frisky, get bigger SSDs, but get a matched pair.

RAID-0 SSDs make for really snappy OS and game load times. Nobody I play with beats my load times into games.

The only caveat here is that RAID-0 offers NO REDUNDANCY... Just ZOOM! In RAID-0, if one of the drives fails, the RAID will collapse and the OS will crash so make sure you back up your OS off to mass storage (which why wouldn't you be doing that anyway?). Hell, with a 6TB in there, I wouldn't feel bad about backing up to the internal data drive, and then offloading every once and a while to USB for safekeeping.

u/Th3AntiNoob · 1 pointr/techsupport

With the older DDR2 standard of RAM I don't think going over 4gb (especially with a dual core processor) is going to give you a noticeable performance boost.

If you are going to make an upgrade you should purchase an SSD to replace your 5400rpm hard drive. You can get 120gb drives in the area of $60 easily and you can get 250gb drives for around $105. This upgrade would help with the speed that data is cached between RAM and the HD, so if you are having memory issues this might actually help in that area as well as others.

I will include a few links of drives I have personally used at my PC support job:

u/gavvit · 1 pointr/HomeServer

For that kind of use, almost any kind of low-powered home server would be suitable - just shop around based on price and power consumption. Even a fanless, Atom-based, NUC-sized unit would suffice.
e.g. This one: http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GB-BXBT-2807-Barebones-Celeron-Included/dp/B00KR0QHXW

Same goes for disk performance - any modern HDD will provide more than enough throughput for your needs. Put a small SSD in the machine for the OS to boot from and use for swap and temporary processing, 120gig would be more than enough and that size SSDs are dirt cheap now.
e.g. This one: http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-SSDNow-SV300S37A-120G/dp/B00A1ZTZOG

A simple external 3.5" USB connected drive would be fine for your actual files. You said 6TB would do so this would seem to be a decent choice: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Desktop-External-Storage-STDT6000100/dp/B00R1P2WDK

You don't need a RAID array either, just get a second external drive of the same size as the first and sync to it on a regular basis to keep your main media archive backed up.

Just make sure to put a decent amount of RAM in there (4GB min, preferably 8GB) - http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Technology-1600MHz-PC3-12800-KVR16LS11/dp/B00CQ35HBQ - and you're set.

That's about $350 (based on Amazon prices) to get started with another $175 to get a backup solution (second 6TB drive) in place, which you could do at a later date.

Quoted from a post I made about the new pfSense box I just put together, this would also work well for your needs:

>I recently bought one of these with this RAM and this hard drive to replace my virtualized pfSense install after I was away for two weeks and had ESXi issues that took my VPN offline. I know this sub isn't a fan of Realtek NICs, but what I was looking for was: a processor that supports AES-NI, fanless, compact, dual NICs, low power consumption, and decent price. This machine hit all of those, with the only drawback being non-Intel NICs. So far, I've had absolutely no issues with it. It's a little overkill if you just want basic routing, but I wanted to be able to run OpenVPN, Snort, pfBlockerNG, etc. and have a comfortable overhead for anything I wanted to try in the future.

I would avoid the Pipo box you mentioned, as it only has 10/100 Ethernet ports.

u/Lololwut · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

If you don't care about internal space, getting a SSD would be a better(and more noticeable) upgrade for your laptop.

u/SinfulSpuds · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

From what I remember reading about hybrid hard drives, the largest performance increase they give has to do with coming out of hibernation and a bit of start-up time. Programs used often are also cashed on the ssd which allows faster access time, but I don't think the performance gain supports the price increase. If anything, getting a 120gb SSD (the Kingston v300 has worked really well for me for a great price.

The brand for ram can matter, but there are several reputable brands I have used and Kingston is solid memory for both ram and ssd's

Honestly just get anything with a good combination of price and reviews. They're all fast and all designed to last about a decade now, so there's no sense spending too much if you don't have a special use for it. Of course there can be firmware issues with specific models so that's why you should skim the negative reviews.

Like any bulk storage, you should never trust it completely (in other words, run your bloody backups!). But if you want a smallish SSD for a system drive it's pretty simple to move your user files (including "My Documents" etc in Windows) to another drive. You probably don't need SSD speeds for most files you store anyway.

My first SSD is a 120 GB Kingston V300 I got on sale for US$70 and it's great. Newegg seems to have it for $62 right now but their site isn't cooperating at the moment.

u/Shuurk · 1 pointr/AlienwareAlpha

Some good options are the Samsung 850 EVO, SanDisk SSD, or the Kingston Digital. If you're looking for space and you don't mind the loss in speed you can also go with this Seagate SSHD. You can also use the stock hard drive and use an external hard drive enclosure for some extra space.

Did you ever defrag your hdd? There lots of ways a computer can locked up. One issue I always faced is horribe hdd behavior due to a fragmented hdd. It causes programs to freeze and the os to feel much slower than a fresh install. Any os writes and reads alot on a hdd.

You should see some performance gains. The hard drive is probably a serious bottleneck for your computer.

Kingston SSD drives are super cheap. I haven't used one yet, so I can't make any claims to performance.

Something like this for the old drive.

For the OS, you can download the OS from the Mac App store, and do a fresh install. There should be plenty of guides out there on how to install OSX on a new drive. They'll be more detailed than I could be. I don't have any experience with Pro Tools, or how to install it. I suspect you can find a guide for that as well.

If anything goes wrong, you can still put your old drive back in and you'll be up and running.

I found these items pretty quickly and didn't bother price checking across different sites, I used HotUKDeals for some of them so these should be pretty decent.

3.2GHz 6MB processor, 120GB SSD, 1TB HDD, Blu-ray and CD reader and writer, 8GB RAM, GTX 750 Ti. You can probably upgrade that processor whilst staying under 700 but that's a perfectly reasonable processor. The memory is the same stick I have and it's perfectly fine (shot up in price though).

This build DOES NOT take in to account price for an OS or a screen. You didn't specify if you wanted them.

EDIT:
also, all of the sites I have listed are trustworthy sites and I have used all 3 of them in the past. If you want to compare prices two other sites I know are trustworthy are OverclockersUK and CCLonline.
