I got mine new for $100 from the Microsoft Store, and it's great for the price I paid. It certainly has its issues though, mainly that it's too difficult to write quickly and it frequently refuses to wake up without a hard reset. I use mine with a 64GB card and the transfer speeds from a 64GB usb 3.0 flash drive is several times faster than writing to it from my pc with usb 1. I'm not sure how fast it's supposed to be, so I can't say if it's performing as it should. I keep mine in an IVSO case all the time, so I feel little heat, but usually feel no heat. Mine is mostly used for reading with DrawboardPDF, which is awkward and unreliable, but occasionally I'll use it to watch 720p videos stored on the memory card or on a Plex server. I disable rotation most of the time, and manually rotate when switching from reading to watching videos.

While I'm happy with the $100 I paid, I regret paying an extra ~hundred for Microsoft CompleteCare or whatever it's called, and buying that first stylus that worked very poorly.

I still have the OS as originally installed, and haven't updated any of the firmware, so the issues I've experienced might have already been addressed by the updates or Windows 8.1.

However, if what you want is expandable storage, then you might want to take a look a Wifi enabled hard drives

A lot more storage, has its own battery rated to last for ~10 hrs (doesn't consume the N9's battery), and you don't have to worry about future devices having OTG support or not when trying to use it. (it works with anything that is wifi capable).

EDIT 2: After an afternoon of researching different options, I have decided on buying at some point in the near future this to solve any storage needs I may have with present or future nexus devices (it accepts any USB flash drive or SD card reader, and can be easily accessed as a NAS on ES File Explorer):

Also, if you have an android device, get one of these USB->Micro USB duo devices to give your mobile device/tablet more storage.

I use a Nexus 7 (16gb storage) with a 64GB kingston plug in USB to watch any films or music.

Most android phones can read USB drives now (which are in reality far more convenient for data transfer and used in many more places than SD cards - I have one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00LIXJ54K ) not to mention having decent sizes of built in memory to boot (I've barely used any of the 64gb on my one plus one). Would love to see replaceable batteries make a comeback though.

Something I did not even know existed was OTG storage, like this. Depending on the phone you use, there is likely a storage option available for you, and they've gotten real affordable.

Also, another weird option is an external battery WiFi storage, like this.

No doubt SD cards are more convenient, but these were workarounds I used to get me through the limitations of the phones I went with.
