Diphenhydramine isn't great for your brain, but the reason you feel dumb in the morning is simply that it has a long half-life (9-12 hours). This means that even 24 hours later, there's still a bit left in your system, interfering with your reasoning abilities.
I find it unfortunate that there hasn't been more effort to develop non-addictive sleep aids with a shorter half-life. One option that you can look into is another antihistamine called doxylamine. It lasts a bit less long.
I use this when I need to knock myself out. The stuff from niquil. Not to be confused with zzzquil which is diphenhydramine. Doxylamine dreams are pretty intense though.

Wait so its just to help you sleep? I would recommend Doxylamine Succinate, its OTC and knocks me the fuck out. Ive heard that longterm use can cause muscle deterioration though so be careful if you go that route.
