Klipsch ProMedia 2.1's can be had for around $150 and they're just delightful

edit: link http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO

and i've owned these on two seperate occasions and loved em both times

u/SoberIrishGuy · 28 pointsr/gadgets

If it doesn't have to be surround, the Klipsch ProMedia system is hard to beat for the price.

Personally, I'd rather have a half-decent stereo setup than a shitty surround one.

u/puppetmaster2501 · 12 pointsr/audiophile

buy something like: http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO

You can plug your ipod directly into it, you don't need any amplifiers or additional equipment to make it work.

It isn't the loudest most beautiful thing around, but it's not terrible and it does have bass.

u/Jhubbz86 · 12 pointsr/buildapcsales

Get the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system. You can find it on sale for $100-$125 if you keep an eye out.

I had the 4.1 system before it got ruined in a flood, and got the newer 2.1 system a few months ago. Great clarity and monster bass for the size of the sub.

edit: no need for a soundcard. The mobo sound jack is more than capable, unless your system is from 8 years ago.

u/realmain · 9 pointsr/buildapcsales

For the price, these speakers are GREAT. I used to own these for YEARS, but I upgraded to a Klispch Promedia 2.1 last year, which are amazing btw.

u/thisishowiinternet · 7 pointsr/buildapc

[Have these, can recommend]

They're loud, boomy, and sound really wonderful.

I had also considered these

I don't use a sound card, just the integrated one on my motherboard, it does the job fine

u/Skeezix · 7 pointsr/audio

Is he a stickler for super high quality audio?

If you're not going for the absolute best, but want something that sounds pretty damn good at a relatively reasonable price, take a look at this

I actually use this on my pc for movies and gaming and even basic music production and I love them.

u/justanotherdickweed · 6 pointsr/audiophile

Those systems are garbage. Save up for this Klipsh 2.1 or buy it used. It will blow the ones you listed out of the water and is suited for games/hometheater or music. It's double your budget but it's 10 times the system.

u/Emerald_Flame · 6 pointsr/buildapc

Putting the word "gaming" in front of something doesn't make it better. In fact, going out and looking for "gaming speakers" almost insures you are going to get one of the worst products at the price point.

There are no such things as "gaming speakers". They're just speakers.

I haven't looks at 2.1 setups for quite a while, but the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1's have always been relatively well reviewed for the price. Like I said though, I haven't looked at stuff for a while so there may be better deals out there now.

u/megandr · 5 pointsr/sonos

Had these for the past 10 years or so, still rocking strong.

The only odd thing about them is that they don't have a power switch. They're always on.

http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO

I bought these a few years ago and they are still running strong. Sound quality is excellent for the price, though I now use them as TV speakers.

u/leachlife4 · 5 pointsr/gamingpc

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1

These are extremely good speakers for pretty much anything. They are also a pretty damn good value. You could probably find them cheaper elsewhere if you shopped around. I have them and love them. Pretty much the next step up is a receiver and speakers (nice ones, not the $30 store brand ones) for a lot more money.

These are $150 but trust me when I say these Klipsch ProMedia's are some of if not thee best desktop speakers for the money.

This eBay store (excellent feedback) has a complete set (used though) for about $75.

And here are two listing for NEW sets on eBay that fall between $100 and $120. Set 1 and Set 2

u/mikaelfivel · 5 pointsr/buildapc

If you want a convenient package, aren't an "audiophile" and the whole budget is $100 - i'd recommend the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 setup. I've had mine for over three years, my buddy's had a set for over 8 years. Great performance for a small package and at a great price.

u/luis3ep · 5 pointsr/apple

Definitely buy the Klipsch ProMedia speakers. Great sound, affordable, and THX certified if that means anything to you.

What is your purpose? Is this for practicing at home? Do your neighbors live close by or need to keep the volume low? Do you need speakers you can use for small get togethers or even small house parties?

These are monitor speakers. Monitor speakers are designed to sound really good for exactly one person in one small spot in the room very close to the speakers. That's why it's a "Monitor" a monitor like a computer monitor is generally for one person at close distances. Monitors aren't going to work well for a house party (think of 20 people trying to gather around a computer video monitor trying to watch a movie) but are probably OK for < 5 people hanging out in one room.

If that is what you need then this will fit your desires. It won't have a lot of bass though, which may be an advantage if you need to keep your volumes low however it is a disadvantage for most DJ's to have limited bass.

If you really want monitors personally I think the best price to performance is the JBL LSR-305 monitors they are the current king of Monitor speakers IMHO and fairly priced.

If you need a more general purpose DJ speakers that cost around the same, but have significantly more bass and can be used for get togethers and house parties up to say 20-30 people then I recommend Logitech Z-623. The Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX are a good choice also but not sure if available in Europe.

u/erratic_calm · 4 pointsr/Beatmatch

The Klipsch 2.1 for $150 sounds better than the Logitech imo.

u/StyloV2 · 4 pointsr/AskBattlestations

This is exactly the place to ask this. I can point you in the right direction on these things, but you'll need some prices, details, or something if you want more advice.

Yes mechanical keyboard. Its like the peripheral upgrade equivalent of an SSD, everything about it is better, and you'll never go back.

HERE is a /r/MechanicalKeyboards stickied reason why. There is no way I could explain it any better. Spend a little time in that subreddit. The stickied post up top of it will help you pick your board. Then check out /r/mechmarket since durability is one of the nicest advantages.

THIS post is all you need to get started on speaker set-ups. /r/zeos is just great and covers all price ranges. Anything less than that, it will just come down to looks and reading reviews. Unless you can cop some of the Klipsch Promedias on CraigsList or something. I got a set for $25 and it is the best deal of my life. Things sound fantastic and I can't even take em above 50% or touch the sub volume without waking the neighbors.

As for wireless headphones, no idea. I don't mind the wires for the audio quality provided.

u/Yaboy-kushy · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 goes on sale every once in a while at /r/buildapcsales and lots of people say they've owned the set for 5-7+ years and rave about them. I just purchased mine and have yet to set it up. I like hearing/feeling bass with my noises and that's exactly what these do.

Logitech z623 also receive high praises from reviewers on clarity from all levels of volume without distortion. This set has an option for a Bluetooth adapter if that's your thing.

Just choose what fits your budget/setup and make sure it's a reputable brand; you'll do fine! Hope this helps.

u/h3xxya · 3 pointsr/synthesizers

For the price, you really can't beat these speakers:

u/dishonestabe · 3 pointsr/buildapc

Scardaddy is right, if you want proper sound go with amp and speakers. But personally I would rather go with a good 2.1 setup apposed to a mediocre 5.1 like Logitech. This would be my choice, Klipsch. Or maybe even this, Dayton.

u/samfitz13 · 3 pointsr/vinyl

These are your best bet
But I'd recommend getting a pair of bookshelf speakers and an amp. It'll be more modular and expandable in the future

i have the klipsch pro media 2.1 and the sub is great, the bass shakes my whole house and they are definitely worth the money. http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO

u/onrul · 3 pointsr/ZReviews

If you're not willing to invest in monitors/amp/sub I'd go with the Klipsch Promedia 2.1

The z623 set is louder, and has more bass, but I've yet to hear any out of box set that beats the klipsch 2.1 for accuracy in mids and highs. Not that bass is lacking on the klipsch set, it's just more balanced.

u/lpmagic · 3 pointsr/buildapc

I, honestly, run my whole set up through a full onkyo receiver, allowing me the great sound of a full 9.2 HT. The connections can and are easy now with most decent receivers having network slots, with the caveat that you get the ability to plug in multiple sources. This of course is much beyond your budget, but might be a decent long term goal.

Computer speakers in general are kind of crap in the audiophile world at large it is much more effective to use a full system if you can integrate it.

the M-Audio studio monitors give decent sound, but the best speakers I have ever had that were simply dedicated to my P.C., bar none, were the klipsch audio pro-media 2.1:

http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO

like I said, were you to ask a full on audiophile, they would tell you it was potentially a waste, but from the standpoint of what is reasonable on a computer, these were far and away my favorites.

u/niuguy · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Your budget is killer. A decent subwoofer alone will kill your budget.

For that money your best bet is a solid computer speakers like these.

u/bnhoang228 · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

They still sell the Promedia 2.1 (https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO). The design hasn't changed but I heard the internals might have been in newer models. They still remain highly regarded for computer speakers.

u/TheSnooter · 3 pointsr/gamingpc

I just got these Klipsch Speakers and I am blown away by them. Figuratively and literally.

u/the-G-Man · 3 pointsr/dubstep

Upvotes for Klipsch 2.1 systems. I got one last year for college because my home system was to big to bring. It hits pretty hard for dubstep, and the sound quality of the drivers are great as well.

A little bit above your 100 dollar mark, but the extra 50 is well worth it. I was actually surprised Klipsch made a system this inexpensive.

u/tito13kfm · 3 pointsr/buildapc

Good, loud, cheap

Pick two. :)

Really, you aren't going to find a great mixture of all three.

kliptsch promedia 2.1 set is probably the best sub $150 set on the market if you can actually find them in stock. They are plenty loud, reasonably priced, and fairly accurate in sound quality. They aren't studio monitors, but they aren't garbage either.

Hi,

This is a great post. I was wondering if you may have some insight on an issue I've had with these headphones. People say the sound is amazing but when I first got them they sounded very flat. Like the treble was too low. So I adjusted that on my PC and it sounds okay.

But in reality it sounds almost exactly like my PC speakers which are:

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 - Always on sale by the way. Never buy these at full price, check SlickDeals.

Now when I was younger my brother had a pair of sound cancelling headphones that I feel produced much better sound. Unfortunately, I don't have a link to them as this was years ago but they were heavy duty with the twisted cord and all.

I know the Phillips are open ear phones. Am I allowing my old nostaglia from when I was young to influence my negatively on how I am enjoying these headphones? Or do I need an amp / something else to bring these things to life? I have an ASUS motherboard w/a dedicated capacitors for sound so I don't really know maybe it's my expectations were too high or not correct?

u/thatfunkjawn · 2 pointsr/vinyl

In 2011, I got the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 System and have been very happy with the purchase. They're currently at $160, but I've seen them drop to around $100-$110 a few times. If it's not a time-sensitive purchase, I would toss the Amazon link on camelcamelcamel and wait for the price to fall.

My personal pros and cons (others may have had different experiences).

Pros

  • Strong, versatile sound for music, movies, or games. Clear highs, full-mids, rich bass.
  • These speakers have a lot of power. I don't think I've ever passed 30% on the subwoofer, or 50% on volume. Sound comes in clear with no distortion. I can't really speak to when you'll begin to hear muddiness or distortion, but in the 4 years I've had them there hasn't even been a time where I needed to get to that volume.
  • I like the convenience of adjusting volume/sub levels directly on the speaker, which also has AUX and headphone jacks.
  • Easy to setup.

    Cons

  • No 'power' button - It's been a while since I've looked back there, but from what I remember there wasn't a power switch to turn the sub off in the back. So they're kind of in 'always-on' mode. Just be sure to reduce volume or remove speakers from the sub before unplugging.
  • Sound is fairly 'directional', so placement is important (this is always the case, but I believe moreso with these speakers).
  • (this can be interpreted as a pro or con) - bass is almost too heavy. I find myself turning the sub down a bit for hip-hop and dance tracks with prominent basslines or booming 808s. This however, is fantastic for gaming and movies.

Either way, I'm a big fan of them. Also, there's a pre-amplifier built-in, so that's one less thing to worry about when running the uTurn.
u/explosivo563 · 2 pointsr/audio

IMO Don't waste your time trying to upgrade those speakers. They don't even have inputs so I don't know where you think you could magically add another channel. Save your money for a real upgrade.

To your other comment on monitors under $100. At that price range no. Unless you spend a significant amount of money on speakers/monitors with low end you will probably still need a sub.

But you can afford a lepai amp and some micca mb52x. $100. Very well regarded. I have this setup. If you get a receiver the micca center channel is only $60.

I would recommend investing in some nice bookshelf speakers as fronts before you consider noving toward a surround setup. If you want a multi channel speaker setup, you will need a receiver. Unless you want to keep it simple and buy a better 2.1 system like the klipsch http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000062VUO/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1413464311&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70

But again, if you want to venture into the real badass surround sound world, start with a budget and some nice fronts. Then add a receiver. Then the skys the limit. Craigslist is great for starting too if you're on a tight budget. Let me know if you have any other questions.

More on speakers, these are really good but won't touch headphones in the same price range. So only go for it if you're mainly use speakers.

But like I said, don't expect anything crazy from speakers unless you're willing to shell out a grand or more.

Not necessarily, they have a ton of low-end for their size. They do sound better with a subwoofer, but that's true of most setups. If you don't want to spend that kind of money, the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 is hard to beat.

This definitely isn't about computer speakers, so my apologies in advance to the subreddit for feeding the irrelevancy - but I must throw my 2 cents in here.

Klipsch Promedia 2.1 - http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1319991372&sr=8-6

Bestbuy still keeps them on their shelves - this model was replaced a few years ago, and has probably been going for nearly a decade, and it's still one of the best dedicated computer setups there is. The only issue is they have this shitty PS/2 type connector on the back of the sub that puts everything together that sucks miserably, and tends to wear out.

u/WhatYeahPoi · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

I agree that would work. Unfortunately I don't have a receiver. My speakers are a klipsh 2.1 set. http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO

Hi all. I'm looking for a compatible wall mount for a trusty pair of Klipsch Promedia 2.1's.

I've read that universal wall mounts (e.g. Monoprice or BB) would do the trick but when I look at what's on offer (e.g. here) I can't wrap my head around how they would fit. If anyone could point me to a specific pair that would work I'd greatly appreciate it.

For reference, here are the (discontinued) Klipsch wall brackets from Klipsch, which I can't seem to find in the wild.

Awesome post, thank you! Hopefully, I'm not too late to get a few questions answered.

  • I am interested in purchasing the Fiio DAC listed here. I use a both headphones and speakers. My speakers are the 2.1 Klipsch. Will the Fiio be powerful enough to support the speakers and will the sound quality be improved when using the speakers as well?

  • I plan on purchasing studio monitors in the future. I plan on purchasing active monitors. Will there be any benefit to using the DAC in conjunction with the studio monitors? Are there any other devices I'll need to use the monitors properly?

    Thank you!

Hey...a few questions for you if you dont mind:

I just checked out Craigslist in my area...would something like this be a good deal?

Would I be able to hook them up to a computer/media server?

Are speakers like the Technics I linked off Craigslist a completely different use case than the other speakers mentioned in this thread? Like, would these work for a TV, or for a computer? Would I want a separate systems?

u/EarthAllAlong · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Hello.

For over a decade I've been using the 200W Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 setup for my computer, and I've finally blown out the subwoofer.

I'm considering just buying another set straight up.

Or, I could get a refurbished version and save a little money.

Or I could try one of these two options.

To my untrained eye, this setup, the Logitech Z623 400 Watt Home Speaker System, 2.1, looks comparable to the klipsch while being half the price.

Or if I wanted to do a similar thing but bigger, I could go with this setup, Logitech Z906 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System.

Am I overlooking anything? How would the klipsch compare to the logitech 2.1 setup? And as a side question, should I be skeptical of the 'refurbished' klipsch?

u/Ajdhfh · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Looking for student-cheap speakers for a small dorm room that will be by the desk/computer setup.

Will be connected to a computer. I enjoy any genre (prefer jazz. Enjoy a good bass tho), and will be used to supplement gaming and movies.

Prefer the budget to be sub or equal to $150.

I've seen these two through some quick google searches for being good options

Edifier R1700BT (a website called lightinthebox has them for $99, but never heard of the site before)

I don't know if anything changed over the years. But the absolute best 2.1 setup I ever owned would be the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 system. They sound so crisp in the lows and the bass/mid/treble stay even as you turn them up (unlike some speakers that drown out the sound with bass).

I have the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 that sounds pretty awesome. Small sub and two bookshelf speakers. Clean tight sound, but don't expect to be blown away completely. It is self-amplified, so you won't need anything else. For under $200 I think it's about the best you can do.

I use these at home. I got them for 90 dollars refurbished and they are fantastic.

u/cubiey · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

If you spend just a little more money, much better option are these. The newest ones are apparently not as good, so looking for a used set might be a more affordable and supposedly cheaper option.

u/usernamenottaken · 1 pointr/audiophile

Yeah they're pretty good for the price and size. Not sure how they compare to the Audioengines as I haven't heard those, but I imagine the Audioengines are a bit better.

Another option with a bit more bass: http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO

u/ILikeMeat · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Don't. Cheap surround sound is bad. You can get a decent set of computer speakers for practically nothing that will sound as good if not better than anything you can buy for less than a couple grand. I recommend these.

u/pppjurac · 1 pointr/audio

On those two, judging by verified reviews build quality is 'meh' and sound quality is mediocre, which is normal for the price. Personally I would stay away from such product no matter price.

If you could get hands on set of used active studio monitors that would be best solution (linear response, mostly good build quality). For such low budget it is really only option - buy used. See how at /r/BudgetAudiophile do it.

Or as honglorn said, get Klipsch set. Save some dollars and buy those a week or two later. It is popular set and works, judging by reviews, quite well.

I'm taking a look at them now and they look pretty nice. I've also been looking into the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX (link here: http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO/ref=pd_sim_147_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=41kgImde1TL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0CC3XNF0S93EP5WQTWPF) and it's got some pretty good reviews. Hello!

Me again, back with more questions. I want to say thanks by the way, you're the only person who responded!

If I wanted to buy a sub, would there be any way to connect it, along with the two book shelf speakers, to that amp I have pictured?

Or is a sub even necessary? How loud are these going to be, and how substantial is the bass going to be compared to say, this 2.1 system I'm familiar with?

Thanks very kindly,

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 US$150 + shipping

Best 2.1 speakers I've ever had.

The front speakers are a nice size and have good sound.

The sub is a monster for it's size, but it is still quite big space wise. The only thing to be aware of is that it does not like to be moved around. The connector is quite weak and people say is easily damaged. Never had that problem and I've had my set for 4 years.

People don't generally associate home theater stuff with computer speakers which is why you'll get downvoted but I will answer your questions and say these speakers http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO have lasted me 4 years now and they are awesome. They can get pretty loud as well. I would recommend even getting a cheap sound card on your desktop though to really make them shine. Anyone who says onboard audio is just as good has never used a sound card or hasn't used a sound card in a long time.

u/freakingwilly · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Cheap 2.1 sound? Cyber Acoustics CA-3602 for $40 on Amazon. Brother had this exact set and he liked it, except the control knob was weird to use and it was impossible to plug in headphones without messing with the volume wheel. The exposed speakers and plastic casing make it look cheap, but they sound really good considering the cost.

Slightly better sound? Creative Sound BlasterX Kratos S3 for $80 on Amazon. All wood casing gives you great sound and they have a good amount of punch. The sub will be a bit lacking if you place it on the floor. You can get these for about $60 from Fry's Electronics if you sign up for their e-mail promo codes. They knock off $20 retail with the code.

Best bang for your buck? Logitech Z623 for $120 on Amazon or the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 for around $120 on Amazon. Both of these are THX certified and they have a lot of bass. Powerful sub coupled with some great speakers make these awesome for the price.

What about something like these Klipsch:

http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1417241684&sr=8-5&keywords=2.1+speaker+system

Sure they may not sound as good (have never owned these) and they're not as customizable but they're a lot cheaper, MORE compact, and I'm sure will sound good for the price. I mean, it is Klipsch and the Pro Media line has been around for...damn...a decade now and have always gotten good reviews.

Other than that there really isn't another non-custom made/put together 2.1 setup for the ~$200 price range...at least nothing that would sound as good.

That's the same ones i have, great cans for the money.

My last pair lasted over 10 years, i finally replaced the vinyl on the ear cups, which cost half the price of a new set, and they broke in half at the top a month or two later, lol. Just ordered a replacement pair.

These are the Klipschs I was talking about, they are THX certified. I use my headphones for precision and these for everything else. The ones I own are over 10 years old as well. The volume knob can be a little touchy but i barely crank these past 3. They are booming.

Simple Audio Listen vs Klipsch ProMedia 2.1

I really want a good set of audiophile speakers. I've never owned one, nor know what to look for. I just know I definitely can appreciate the differences between average speakers and really good ones. Maybe not be able to distinguish between two sets of audiophile speakers, but just need to know if these Simple Audio Listens are worth the money at $161 shipped vs Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers. Keep in mind, if I buy the Simple Audio Listen, I will add a sub woofer, so please don't give the Kipsch extra points for the included sub woofer, nor rate either based on the price since right now, the price points are too similar.

Details pros and cons, even if too technical for me, or just general opinions very welcomed. Thank you!

The have a headphone jack on the right speaker, which also has the main volume and subwoofer controls - They are LOUD, sound incredible, powered subwoofer with a built in quality preamp which allows even a mediocre soundcard to push these and sound great (my Macbook Air sounds great with these) and I believe I paid $150 for my set; you may be able to find a set for cheaper online.

To avoid a receiver and still do 2.1, you would have to go the route of computer speakers like these but that limits your input options (type and number of connections)

u/MaybeImNaked · 1 pointr/buildapc

yeah, the speakers seem pretty mediocre. These go on sale for ~$100 sometimes and they're amazing for a 2.1.

u/dleidig · 1 pointr/buildapc

60 USD is not going to get you very far unfortunately. I'd go with the highest quality 2.1 setup you can find with the highest wattage per speaker. It's nice to be fully surrounded by the sound of a 5.1 setup, however if it's a 60USD 5.1 setup I assume the speakers are extremely low wattage and have small diaphragms producing an undesirable 'tinny'/high-treble sound. For 60USD I would consider buying used speakers, they will be much much better. Well, here are some suggestions:

5.1 option

2.1 option

2.1 used Klipsch option

As you can see the klipsch 2.1 system starts at 70 used, however if you look at the stats it blows away the other systems. The klipsch has two satellites at 35 watts each and a 130 watt subwoofer, while the other two systems and basically any other new systems at that price range have only 5-watt satellites and puny 15-watt subwoofers. And klipsch make kickass speakers in general. If I were you I'd spend more or buy used in order to get into that next tier of sound quality and potential volume.

u/dragonbrad5 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I love Logitech mice, just don't buy their speakers.

Bought a relatively cheap 5.1 Logitech system a few years back. They worked ok, sounded adequate but never great.

Recently I pulled the sub-woofer out of the closet because I wanted to pull the 8" speaker cone out of it to use in another project (sub-bass microphone for drumset).

I get the casing apart... only to find I had been tricked! The 8" speaker cone was a fake, some cardboard made to look like a speaker. Inside I found a much less impressive 4" speaker.

I wasn't mad that it only had a 4" speaker cone, that's fine for a cheap speaker set. What bothered me is that they had a fake speaker... I felt deceived.

(Slightly unrelated, these speakers are awesome and only about $150. I've never heard a better set of speakers for less than $200 Klipsch Promedia 2.1 )

I'm on my second pair of Klipsch 2.1's and couldn't be happier. My only complaint is that the bass does travel to the next room, so if you have roommates don't say I didn't warn you. It also has a knob just for the subwoofer so you can fix that problem pretty easily

u/Double_Damn_Son · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Just like with anything, you can spend 50 bucks on speakers or 50k. Given the set up you have, I wouldn't even bother trying to make the sound system wireless. I suspect that the wires would be behind the desk. I think these systems would both be an upgrade for you, and they would have relatively the same footprint on/below your desk.

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z623-Watt-Speaker-System/dp/B003VAHYTG

https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO

I see both sets go on sale occasionally for 100 or less. I have had that Logitech set for 5+ years at this point. I have never had any problems with them. I also have at least three friends with the same system, and they have had no issues either. I can't speak about the Klipsch set, but I usually see people with good things to say about them. It looks like both systems are around 200w, and I think yours may be less than 50w. You can expect a lot more bass, without a doubt.

The SoundSticks look like something from the Jetsons cartoon, so they do have that going. I certainly wouldn't throw them away.

u/Gravedigger3 · 1 pointr/audiophile

Is there something like this for PC sound systems?

I don't want the absolute cheapest system that you guys are willing to recommend, but I certainly can't afford the top tier. My budget is between $300-$600.

Right now I'm rocking Klipsch ProMedia 2.1, so I imagine pretty much anything I buy that's recommended here will be a huge step up for me.

I just want to replace my current speakers and sub with something quality, something you audiophiles would approve of. As the purchasing advice guide eloquently words it, I'm looking for a "wicked complete computer audio setup". I have a vague idea that I will need an amp or DAC or something to connect the speakers and sub to my computer... but I'm not sure what specs/features I will need to hook everything up.

This setup will primarily be used for listening to music (in FLAC) and playing video games. In case it's relevant I also have my plasma TV and a soundbar hooked up to this computer (I switch the sound output in Windows between my computer speakers and the TV soundbar as needed). I'm not trying to upgrade from the soundbar just yet, but I mention this because I'm wondering if perhaps an AVR (Audio/Video Receiver?) would be better than a DAC for my situation. (If I understand correctly, an AVR performs the same function as a DAC + a bunch of features such as sub integration and video.)

I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions that you guys are willing to provide.

u/GhastlyGrim · 1 pointr/audiophile

Hey guys, I have a $300 (USD) budget to improve my audio performance on my high end PC. When I built it, I more or less ignored the audio side of things, and I'm already regretting that decision :P I'm currently using cheap logitech z313, which aren't horrendous but definitely lack in volume or definition.

I DO NOT have a sound card, and am just using on-board sound of my Asus Sabre-tooth z77. Advertised on their website with these specifications:

Realtek® ALC892 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC

  • Supports : Jack-detection, Multi-streaming, Front Panel Jack-retasking
    Audio Feature :
  • Absolute Pitch 192kHz/ 24-bit True BD Lossless Sound
  • Blu-ray audio layer Content Protection
  • Optical S/PDIF out port(s) at back panel

Ive heard mixed opinions on whether on board sound is just as good as an actual stand alone sound card. I've also read how important a good DAC can be, but am not sure if its a big enough of a deal to include in my initial budget, or just something i should get "down the line" for a slight increase in performance.

My question is this: what should I prioritize my budget for, in terms of performance and cost?

I could potentially get the recommended JBL's (my musician friends seconded the recommendation) but it wouldn't leave any room in my budget for a DAC, soundcard, or subwoofer.

Do you all think I'd be happier with getting the cheaper Klipsch Promedia 2.1 THX certified all in one (http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1408310685&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=Klipcsh+Pro+Media), and then a Schiit DAC on top of it (or sound card?) or would I be better off just getting the best speakers I can afford (The JBLs) and upgrading the rest as I go individually? Is the performance difference one that is drastically noticable or is it a minor difference that only true "audiophiles" would even notice?

As this is for a desktop PC setup, I'm looking for all around solid performance. I use it for everything; from production to gaming to movies to music.
u/hondajvx · 1 pointr/gadgets

In my room I have the Lepai LP-A68 ($24) hooked up to a set of Bose Model 21 speakers. I got those from my brother for free.

If you can't get free speakers, the Dayton Audio B652 ($35) gets great reviews.

So for ~$60 you can get a decent setup, but with no sub it does lack bass.

I have the Klipsch ProMedia ($140) hooked up to my desktop, and those sound fantastic. It'll cost you a bit more, but it's a mind numbing value because these speakers get loud.

u/TimeTravellerSmith · 1 pointr/buildapc

Soundcards are only really required if you need to drive high impedance headphones (read: expensive), you're lacking full surround jacks, or you want some sort of feature they offer (virtual surround, voice augmentation, etc). Other than that, onboard audio works just fine.

As far as recommended speakers, I've been using some Klipsch ProMedias for a few years and they're brilliant. Right now they're at $140 on Amazon, but I picked mine up for about $120 IIRC. I've seen them dip below $100 a few times as well. The bass module isn't huge but it's still there...I just kinda put my feet on it.

Otherwise I'd say head over to /r/audiophile and ask about a nice set of bookshelf speakers and a cheap amp.

>Do you guys keep it plugged in all the time?

Yeah, pretty much. I use my rMBP in the same way you're describing. I read through apple's suggestions on how to keep your battery healthy (sorry I don't have the link) and it said every few days you should run it on battery power for a couple of hours to keep it active. Other than that I have it plugged in all the time.

>What speakers do you guys use?

I don't use any since my monitor has decent built-ins, but I have used the Klipsch ProMedia speakers before in my office and they are great. (They have wires though...)

Sorry, can't say anything about the monitor but, I will give you a few other suggestions. First, I highly recommend the magic trackpad over a mouse. The gestures are such a time saver and I don't feel like I'm using all the features of OS X without them. Second, I suggest getting a mini display port to HDMI (or whatever you need) to connect to your monitor. Since you'll have the Macbook closed, you'll need to have it plugged in and having both cords going from the same side right next to each other is a big hassle saver. Lastly, I use the rain design mTower as my dock/stand. I love the design and it holds the rMBP really nicely. Yes, I think it is a bit over priced, but so are all the other options and it's something you kinda need.

These are widely considered the best desktop 2.1 speakers for anything: https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-2-1-Certified-Computer/dp/B000062VUO/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

Make sure it's the THX certified version by Klipsch and not a cheaper revision.

Wow, that was super helpful! I had a feeling the mixing aspect was going to be a big driver in the choice.

All of my video editing is for fun. Short film projects for local competitions. The only thing for pay I would do is wedding videos, so trying to decide how essential perfect mixing headphones are for that. If I decide to forget the mixing aspect, it sounds like X2 may be the right choice here. But if mixing is something I want to do pseudo-seriously, then HD598.

For mixing right now, I have a 2.1 speaker setup at the PC. I use the [Klipsche ProMedia 2.1 speakers](https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO), which I'm sure might make professional mixers cringe, but it's what I've used to date in my projects. Would the HD598 or HD6XX+amp be better for mixing than just using that 2.1 setup?

What would be the amp you'd recommend for the HD6XX? And what would be the lowest cost amp that would still make the HD6XX the preferred choice? I'll have to re-evaluate my budget for this one.

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but I've been using these Klipsch Promedia 2.1 speakers for a few years and absolutely love them. Great sound. Subwoofer is great. Zero complaints.

I am doing a new desk setup with new speakers and I am a little confused planning out how to connect my speakers. I have not purchased them yet but I am looking at these.

My plan is to connect my computer through these, as well as a line in from my monitor so I can use them with my Chromecast that is connected to my monitor. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to what hub/ splitters are available that would work out well. It would also be nice to tie my headphones into this but I am not sure if this is possible.

I read somewhere that a splitter could hurt computer components, I am not sure if this is true or not, but I just want to be sure I'm not damaging my rig.

Thank you for your time!

Would that work with these speakers?

These are more computer speakers, but the Klipsh Promedia 2.1 fit the bill.

You'd have to get a cable that's optical to miniplug for the PS4 and miniplug to miniplug for your computer.

Klipsch Promedia 2.1.

Amazing sounding but have build quality issues.
Hint: buy them used and make sure they are a couple of years old the ones that suffer from quality issues tend to break in a month or two. You can bet on buying a system that is 2 years or older that they will chug on for years. (My three used pairs have each lasted over four years now.) The only new pair i've bought died in a week.

Amazon has deals on bluetooth and wifi speakers often. I own the G-17 which I got through a goldbox deal on amazon a year ago and it's a great wifi small speaker, although not very useful to be honest because it has to be plugged in as opposed to bluetooth which you can take with you anywhere.

Otherwise, I own the Klipsch 2.1 setup and it's got quite a punch for the price.

Kill it with fire! The cheapest 2.1 on earth that will get a recommendation here is the Klipsch 2.1
