The Konnwei adapter recommended by the app author has been plugged into my car 24/7 for about two years. No issues.
What /u/iakona_ said to set the regular timer. Unfortunately no known way to set the climate controls from the OBDII port, so no remote heating outside of the built-in timer. Also, make sure to get a verified working OBDII dongle. Newer ones don't work.
