What do you mean by "a midi"? A controller? My midi controller was 99 dollars, the Korg microkey. I recommend it.
If 99 dollars is out of your price range to get started..... Man. Over the past three years I've spent 600 dollars on music equipment. And that is nothing, I still have highly bare bones equipment.
Don't get me wrong, I have everything I need to make good sounding stuff, but walking into a real studio makes me feel like an idiot.
Sorry for the rant. My point is that if you're unwilling or unable to spend 99 dollars on a midi controller than its gonna be a little tough to get into this hobby.

I would be shocked if the Alesis V25 knobs and pads didn't work on Linux. I'm sure they're just MIDI controllers. All MIDI controllers work on Linux generally. Where did you hear otherwise?
There's tons of options that work, basically any USB MIDI controller works. I have a Korg Microkey and it works fine, comes in 25, 37, 49, and 61 key versions. I also have a pressure-sensitive controller from Keith MacMillen. That works. I've never found a USB MIDI controller that didn't work on Linux.
Great suggestions man but they are out of my budget right now :/ Im looking for a controller that costs from $100 to $200. Im not going to go professional or anything right now I just wanna have some fun mixing at hom or at some parties with friends! Still thats some god info you just gave me. I'm definitely looking forward to buying the s4 though, looks orgasmic. Ableton live does have operator and analog (internal synthesizers). You should learn these first if you can however sylenth1 and native instruments massive are good choices. Spire as well.

Not very clued up on speakers but you would benefit from getting monitoring speakers from the beginning. KRK's are popular. I have the KRK rokit 6s and they are pretty nice for the price.
