I think your 2011 MBp should have a Thunderbolt Port. If you own another Mac with a Thunderbolt Port you could use a TB Cable. Did that once between two Macs and it was pretty fast. IIRC TB 1 offers about 10Gbit/s already.

External TB Drive would work too. But now that the TB2 days are gone i guess that connector won't have a future... there are ext. drives that have both ports, USB3 and TB though

If speed is a concern, be sure to get a Thunderbolt 2 enclosure if you can find one... or something with USB 3 and eSata. You can always find a Thunderbolt to eSata later. Other option might be something like this or this.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E5YIIWS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WwrPCb2YAYQQC this is an external hard drive for thunderbolt 2, and way overpriced for the size. So not exactly what you asked for, but I too looked for one that was reasonable and this is all I could find. Didn’t buy it, not worth it really for hard drive performance. I think there is a company that made thunderbolt 2 enclosures that I found, but it was extremely expensive and they were more for sitting on the desk to backup at night. There is a thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adapter... however it’s mostly made for displays, and doesn’t seem to do a good job of that from the reviews at that. I’ve heard of some people using the adapter to hook up external GPUs which use thunderbolt 3, but I’ve also seen people say that doesn’t work. Very hit and miss if that’d actually work. Hope you find something, but thought I’d summarize what I learned when I was looking!
