I have a big fan in my room that I use at night. I used to only use it during the summer because it was hot, but now I use it everyday. I just don't point near myself.

If you get a a decent one, it should be a nice source of whitenoise. It's just constant ... noise. I know you said your own fan makes a ticking noise, but if you get a decent one, it shouldn't do that. Like one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-3520-Cyclone-Pivoting-Floor/dp/B000VZRUIO/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&qid=1420044092&sr=8-32&keywords=lasko+cooling+fan+3+speed

I have that one and it's been running for 8+ hours a day for the past three years and it still works great. It's loud enough to block out nearby noises but quiet enough to be unnoticeable unless you purposely listen for it.

I would do anything for an air conditioner but right now I'm just going to try to get 2 of these fans, if that is even possible. :/ I'm not looking forward to the summer.

Invest in a floor fan or two. The kind that move a lot of air. Lay out your gear and put the fans on full blast to dry your gear as fast as possible each time. The longer your gear sits the more smelly it will become. I washed my gear once and then was on top of fully drying it out for 3 or 4 months. There was no smell at all until I lapsed and left it all in the bag one night.

I have two of these that I lay down. Then put a cheap wire rack over top of them which the gear lays on.
