You can still buy the giant tub of generic blocks, plates, stick pieces, etc that the girl is holding in the photo. here

Non-theme LEGO is expensive.

We ordered a 400 piece set from Amazon (several, actually). My wife used them for a lab she was teaching at the local college - something about molecules.

Note: 400 pieces isn't as much as I remembered. I must have had thousands when I was a kid.

Well, it's not that you're plainly wrong. LEGO Ultimate Building Set - 405 Pieces.

It's that childless people too old to play with legos seem to have fabricated this weird myth that you can't get a bucket of legos.

It's like old people whining about how "back in my day we used to build our toys from scratch, and walk uphill both ways to school, in the snow! In 100 degree weather! And legos didn't come in kits. We were special!" Except it's 18-30 year olds posting on an internet forum about.

LEGO? LEGO? THIS IS A PLACEHOLDER COMMENT. I WILL BE RIGHT BACK AFTER I NARROW DOWN A SET CHOICE.

CAUSE FUCK YES, LEGO.

Oh, and raffle phrase "Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen"!

ETA: This Creator set would be great! It's hard to narrow them down cause there are so many great ones. and sadly this one is too much.

The last thing I built? Was a little mini AT-ST that came in a set that /u/Qu1nlan got me!

That's a decent price. This bulk tub of parts http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Ultimate-Building-Set-Pieces/dp/B000NO9GT4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333330522&sr=8-1 is 2.4 pounds, 405 pieces, and $30. Say the tub is 0.4 pounds, that's $15 per pound of lego.

That said, it's Craigslist - offer $100. :-) Good luck! Post pics if you get it.

You've always been able to buy both designed sets and tubs of LEGO for building whatever you want.

e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000NO9GT4

Some people like using their imagination, some people prefer following instructions.

This LEGO set is high priority.

My son is getting a big bucket of LEGOs for Christmas: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005VPRDBS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3A75OQHMPSD3E&coliid=I37OLSCHT22HUG or http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Ultimate-Building-Set-Pieces/dp/B000NO9GT4/ref=pd_sim_t_6

It's going to be a long lasting toy that helps him learn and be creative, and most importantly they aren't exhaustible like art supplies are.

As someone who grew up poor with two brothers, I can definitely say that Christmas can be done better and more cheaply with one great group gift, than with a bunch of smaller gifts for each child. Also, Goodwill tends to have $1 toys and presents right around the holidays. It's not new, but IMO parents do their children a disservice by teaching them to expect new things.

> basic affordable set with lots of pieces

Not with Lego, although you can find some good collections on ebay.

If I needed lots of pieces, I would get one of these: http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Ultimate-Building-Set-Pieces/dp/B000NO9GT4 or http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Bricks-More-Brick-4626/dp/B005VPRDBS/ (or anything from the "bricks & more" line http://creative.lego.com/en-us/products/10681.aspx )...

Although be sure to do the legwork, some of these go on sale for exorbitant prices. That first one shouldn't be $70 even in a million years.

If you are looking to get sets 'for adults', there is a great collection of them here: http://brickset.com/sets/list-9150 and that whole site has a lot more.

Personally, anything 'cuusoo' is going to be awesome. They are like the reddit of lego set creation: http://lego.cuusoo.com/

This Lego set is on my boys' wishlist.
