I prefer USB since I have so many phone chargers laying around. I have 3 of these. For the price they are great. You could spend $20 more and get more color options + a remote if you wanted to.

Here are the amazon.ca links. The LED strip is a bit different but it is almost the same. You can control the colors on the litle dongle connected to it. As for USB power to the LEDS, there should be an option in your motherboard's BIOS to turn of USB power when you shutdown. Most motherboards today have that option.

About $3 more on Amazon, for a longer length (almost 2x long), including prime delivery.

put monitors on one side, tower on the other. Or put the monitors on one side, tower in the middle, and controllers/headset/mic/etc. on the other side. I'm using these to hold power strips, it's only going to work for the long skinny ones though. IKEA has one that can hold a wider variety of sizes. Based on the shadow and graininess of the pic I am guessing you only have a ceiling light? You could add a lamp on one side and one of these on the other. If you want to continue with the green color scheme, you could get one of these orb things and an rgb led strip

If you are going to keep it on one setting, or don't mind taking the side panel off whenever you want to change the setting, I use this one.

I used these a few weeks ago to do the same and have been happy.

Edit: The kind I have is a single rgbw diode, not that exact strip. That one would provide a weird white but that's the same concept.

There are tons of different ways to accomplish this.. But I'd say by far the easiest way for you to do what you need to do without hassle is buying something like this. It has color changing leds but if you don't like that I'm sure you can find other ~5v RGB strips.

This is ideal since the strip is already designed to accept 5v via USB and that's much easier to accomplish via batteries than a usual 12v or 120v strip for example. You could probably power the strip via 3 AA batteries in series, costing you the price of a battery holder. No need for larger series of cells or any kind of extra driver for the leds.

Lemonbest RGB on Amazon

I may be dropping some money on these...

It's a LED RGB strip I purchased from Amazon 3 years ago (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DTOAWZ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_A3xyxb8Y0DWKW).

The one behind the TV is a RGB LED strip connected to the USB port (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015R44RZC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_44xyxb5TAQ4Y3).

Do yourself a favor and use a strip designed for 5V operation instead. Something like this or this. That way you can use it in conjunction with a rechargeable USB power bank. They also make USB inline switches if you need one.
