There's really no reason to buy an iMac pro in my opinion, you can get excellent color recreation on any mid/high tier 4k monitor from about $400-600. My coworker that works in blender and Photoshop has this monitor and loves it. That's what I would recommend.

Intel 9700k or AMD 3700x are my processor suggestions ~$350

32gb ram ~$175

2070 super ~$550

1tb NVMe SSD ~ $125

Other peripherals, PSU, case, other storage, cd drive ~$500

All in all you're looking at a rig with more powerful hardware and only slight difference in image quality for the average professional for about $2500-$3000 less.

G-Sync works perfectly on my LG27UK850. You don't need to pay the premium for the 850 model, I just wanted it for USB C with my Macbook on the side. The 650 or whatever should save you a hundred or two.

If you're buying a card like that, you might as well shoot for that 60hz crispy 4K experience.

An added bonus is that since it's a "content creation" monitor and not a "gaming" monitor, it doesn't look like a children's optimus prime toy!

Dont trust newegg's original prices. Always fact check with other sources. They inflate prices to promote "better" deals.

I've been considering buying the cheaper (non usb-c) version of this https://www.amazon.com/LG-27UK850-W-Monitor-Connectivity-FreeSync/dp/B078GVTD9N .

Lots of good reviews, but I haven't tried it personally. I'm sure you're aware that there are adapters that will allow you to buy a monitor without usb-c, which would give you a lot more options.

From what I can tell, only difference between this model & the 27UK850-W variant is the warranty (3-yrs vs. 1-yr for the 27UK850-W consumer version)

The background is actually the Apple TV Aerial screensaver (made by Apple). It isn’t directly available on Mac but you can get it here https://github.com/JohnCoates/Aerial

But it’s probably more than you want to spend. I have an LG 27ud69 which is probably only $350 right now (haven’t looked) and I connect it via DisplayPort to usb c cable.

I’d just get something like that and a nice usb c dongle for your standard usb needs.

Or you could always get a gently used good condition Thunderbolt Display which has the dock built in. Although they are getting old now, it’s still a high quality display. I use one in addition to the 4k.

I just picked up two of these 4K USB C monitors for $318 ea through Amazon Warehouse. Only thing “wrong” was “damaged packaging”. I opened them and they look mint but have not hooked them up yet.

Make sure your power brick delivers enough juice to charge a laptop. Minimum 60W, preferably 90W.

Wow, thank you for the reply! The monitor that I've been using is this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078GVTD9N/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Me too! And it's not as expensive as most. Plus you can do monthly payments if you have Amazon Prime. (edit: seems the monthly payment option is gone)

VESA standards? That’s the first time I’m hearing of that. How about this monitor?

It’s 60Hz freesync, but as the other comment said, you’d need display port to get anything above 60Hz freesync so I’m looking at this one. I also want to use it for graphic design and photo editing.

I'm also looking at a few different options and have come down to a few. Any feedback on these is much appreciated because it's been mainly solo research into new territory for me lol.

  1. LG 27UK850-W 27" 4K UHD IPS Monitor with HDR10 with USB Type-C Connectivity and FreeSync. This one is the most expensive of the three I've looked at. I'm mainly looking at it for the USB C port on the back because I'm going to be getting a new Macbook soon so it'd be good to be able to charge it right from there.

  2. BenQ 28 inch 4K HDR10 Monitor (EL2870U), UHD 3840x2160, FreeSync, 1ms Response Time, Eye-Care, Brightness Intelligence Plus, HDMI, DP, Built-in Speakers. This one is my favorite, but it is sold out nearly everywhere. This has had a lot of great reviews and is not at a killer price point.

  3. ASUS VP28UQG 28" 4K/UHD 3840x2160 1ms DP HDMI Adaptive Sync/FreeSync Eye Care Monitor. This is the fan favorite from most articles because of the price point, but I believe it doesn't have HDR.

Ultimately, you're going to have to figure out what's best for you and what you are most interested in, but those are the three I have my eyes on.

TLDR; 4k is good for monitor size starting at 32 and 2k for 27 inch and less. I still bought 27 inch 4k.

Here’s my experience.

The texts on 27 inch display at 4k resolution is not readable. I had to scale it up. This made the resolution down to 2k which was comfortable to read. I use It for coding. So even if you buy a 4k monitor you’ll eventually use it at 2k when scaled up. I’m not an expert and I may be wrong but this is from a layman’s experience.

Regarding monitor choices. Here’s what I tried and my choices.

I tired LGUltrafine 21.5inch 4k ($699). It’s was good. Like I said the scaling up brought the resolution down close to 2k. Reading and coding was comfortable. However, I was not able to connect it to my work laptop which is windows and doesn’t have hdmi. My Bad, I thought the usb c to hdmi adapter works reversible when connected to monitor. I returned the monitor. This monitor and the LG UltraFine 27 inch 5k monitor ($1299) is a good choice of you have Mac only environment.

I tried HP Envy 27in 4k. It’s a decent and affordable monitor that’s costs around $440. It worked both on Mac using usb c and windows laptop via hdmi. The comfortable reading resolution was 1440p. The monitor was wobbly which I did not like. This is not a big deal though. It also has issues displaying when my mbp wakes up from sleep. I returned it.

I thought of buying a 2k with usb c but I ended up ordering LG 27UK850 4k monitor which is about $750. It is a bit expensive but I think this will be good for me as it has Usb c, hdmi as well as usb 3.0 hub which I needed. It will be delivered today and I can share my thoughts after my initial usage.

LG 27UK850 - $699

HP ENVY 27-inch UHD 4K

LG UltraFine 5k.

HP announced a new 27 4k monitor which i guess is not available yet in US. worth checking though.

All these are usb c supported that’s charges also you mbp. You’ll find other less expensive 4k models if you don’t need USB c support. Let us know what you bought. Cheers!

If you have a recent generation MBP with Thunderbolt 3, it's more convenient to get a display with a USB-C port that provides adequate charging, and to my knowledge those only come in 1440p or higher resolution. At present there's only a very small number of them available. Also, if you want your display to come anywhere near the pixel density of the MBP's own display, then you'll need a 4K monitor.

At present this one is probably the best of them:

Have it mounted in my office with several gaming systems connected to it. The HDR is phenomenal, and works right out of the box without any tweaking. I'm almost tempted to get the 32 inch model later down the line.

Keep in mind this is considered an 'unconventional setup' since it isn't a tv monitor. But after looking at all the 4k tv choices, this is the one that I felt the most comfortable with for overall console/pc gaming.

That’s true is srgb better or it doesn’t matter much when it has to do with the fans and as well what do you think of this monitor

I don't think it supports daisy chaining via displayport.

u/Bustapalapeno · 1 pointr/Surface

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this looks like a non-thunderbolt 4K display with usb-c.

But yea, no multi-monitor support as far as I know with usb-c, not at that resolution.

If you've ever used a decent 4K monitor, you'll never go back. Maybe this was a good thing?

I personally highly recommend this one, which also charges your Mac at the same time (turning the original charger into a spare for travel etc).
