Buy him Jason Brennan's Libertarianism: What Everyone Needs to Know. It is the best introduction book to libertarianism, and it is written by probably the best Bleeding Heart Libertarian there is, so it is very appealing to leftists. Seriously, I seldom make book recommendations unless they are very good. I disagree with a lot of the other suggestions in this thread (especially the free market economics books).

If you don't want to buy him the book or know that he won't read it, then point him to this video also containing Jason Brennan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WlnTJZtmuI

Also, ask if he really believes that you are allowed to use violent force against people to protect them against themselves, etc. Would he like that? If he plays games or goes on certain websites, how would he feel if those activities were restricted for "his own good"? What if gay sex really does have a higher chance of transmitting HIV among the participants; does that mean we have a right to make illegal homosexual relationships? No, he doesn't actually believe these things. And if he says he does, then put him in the situation instead of an imaginary person, and he should realize that he doesn't like being told what to do either (where if he doesn't comply, he will be sent to actual prison). He's just really disconnected right now (as are most authoritarians).

The book is here, and it is pretty inexpensive: http://www.amazon.com/Libertarianism-What-Everyone-Needs-Know/dp/019993391X

P.S. You won't get anywhere if you guys both aren't sure what you guys are arguing about, or if he isn't clear on what it would take for him to change his mind, what his premises are, etc.
