It would be much better to get a powerline adapter. It essentially allows you to use your power outlets as really long ethernet cables.

If you need a good router for Wifi that you can load your own firmware onto, its a decent deal. Otherwise I'd go with powerline adapters. Similar speeds to being hardwired. This is what I use, never going back to wifi.

That was my first thought. Definitely use wired, even the powerline adapters are more reliable than wireless. I've recommended them to my GF's bro and dad (both are ps4 gamers) which were using wireless before and it was mediocre. They upgraded to powerline adapters and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

I recommend investing in a powerline adapter. Something like this will set you back 40-70 bucks and will deliver a much faster and more stable connection.

I am not sure if I understood your question properly, but I am guessing that you want to get a wired connection to your room from the modem right? If so, I would suggest looking into a powerline connection. Something like this:

Sticky_Substance, look into Powerline networking. Check Amazon or Newegg. You basically buy a set of two devices, a little over $100 if you get the Cisco brand. You plug one end into an outlet (not a surge protector) and plug it into your router. Then you take the second device and plug it into anywhere in your house. You instantly have a wired connection through your house's powerlines to your router! No configurations or setup required.

...Or you can connect an ethernet cable from your Xbox to your laptop and bridge your wireless and wired connections through your networking settings on your laptop. This still will be using WiFi and not as efficient.

I have a Linksys Powerline Adapters with one plugged into a surge protector. They seem to be working just fine. I'm averaging about 18Mbps with some jumps up to 24Mbps or so. My 5Ghz wifi is about 28Mbps so not a whole lot of loss in speed, but what I gain over wifi is under 12ms ping.

At some point soon I'm going to move the adapter to the wall instead of the surge protector because my WiiU dock barely reaches the outlet. I need to pick up some cable thumbtacks first so things are neat, I've just been lazy.

But one thing I read about these is that it likely works better if both adapters are on the same breaker.

Upvote for powerline, but those are waaaaaaaay more expensive than they need to be. You can get a good set for under $50.

Powerline adapter should do the trick. Works better than wireless too.

Have you thought about ethernet over power lines? It worked well for me. Your garage will need to be in the same circuit as where the transmitter is plugged (usually near the modem).

Plug in another AP to it for your upstairs. Make sure they are on different channels but use same SSID and password.

Powerline Adapters are extremely handy. I used mine for 4 years before it finally gave out. I highly recommend one. I bought this model. Worked great!

I didn't investigate too closely, but if you are looking for a good upgrade, the WRT600N is a MASTER at long range wireless N - and I noticed Amazon has them available starting at $55 used. It also is loaded with other features like a USB port to plug in an external hard drive for network storage. One thing I would like to correct after looking at mine is that mine does not have user-replaceable antennas unless you are willing to do modification of the hardware possibly involving soldering. Mine has insane range, it is running my parent's home-office in a 2 story 2500 square foot home with no gap in coverage anywhere on the 2 acre plot of land.

They also have one that has a wired port and broadcasts wifi at the same time for $76. Wish I could be of more help but $50 is a tight budget to squeeze range into.

I have wished there is a solution for this also because I am in the same situation. I do not believe it is possible. If you are a DIY kind of guy you could theoretically get some CAT5 cable and use the CAT3 in the wall now to pull the new cable through. There are many reasons why this may not be a good idea or even possible.

I am not sure why you don't want to use wifi (my reason is speed) but if that is not an option then something like this would be a good alternative. It should provide similar speed as an Ethernet but I am not sure.

The ps3 and my older macbook only has wireless b/g. This is one of the reasons I haven't upgraded my router, I guess I never noticed about the speed since my ps3 was always hooked up wired. I may get homeplugs, would that help? Homeplugs dont go through the wireless network right? Just through my houses power? I found a 4 port one for about $60:

Why spend a ton on a router when you can get him a powerline adapater? As long as his house is on a single power grid, it should work well. Something like this.
