For high quality stuff, these are the newest craze in the chi-fi scene. I haven't used them myself (I can't use IEMs, I have tiny baby ear canals), but everything I hear about them has been extremely positive. Custom tips, replaceable cable, high quality sound reproduction, etc.

/r/headphones subscriber reporting in. Analog audio is really finicky, and most people don't care or even think about its quality on a day to day basis. But even something as simple as an apple USB-C Dongle (which has, basically, the iPhone's decent DAC chip inside of it), will be an upgrade over a lot of other handset's on board sound.

DACs performance can be measured by how closely they can replicate the original waveform of the file they're decoding, and with how much dynamic range (difference between loud and quiet parts), how much volume it can play back into headphones, etc. Audio Science Review is a great place to start. Head-Fi, and SuperBest Audio Friends are also great places to lurk.

The Apple USB-C Dongle is like 10 bucks, which, if you have a USB C phone, is worth trying out with your favorite pair of wired Earbuds, if for no other reason than to see if things sound better. Is the apple Dongle a world-beater for $10? Nah, but if you want to go crazy there's things like the Audio Quest Dragonfly series, or the iFi Audio iDSD DAC/Amps, or Fiio's Q1 and Q5s.

It's a deep dark spiraling rabbit hole into financial ruin.

Also, the biggest difference in how things sound, will usually be your headphones, or speakers. Getting a decent pair of headphones can take you a long way, and they don't have to break the bank either. Heck, Sony Mh755's were a free inclusion with their Bluetooth modules, and sell for 8 bucks on eBay, and their sound quality has been pretty widely acclaimed. That being said, there's also the Tin Hifi T2, or if you prefer over ears and want a new experience, the Philips SHP-9500.

For future reference, these in-ear monitors are comparable to IEMs in the $300 range but only cost $50.

I've been using the Tin Audio T2 for the past couple months, they are good entry level in ear monitors for $50, great build quality and nice sound quality. They have a natural, flat sound so they don't really have a bias towards heavy bass or pronounced treble, just presents the music as is which I prefer (however that's not to say they are lacking in bass, there's plenty there).

If you want something that intentionally exaggerates bass (V Shaped) then maybe look into the KZ ZS10 (I don't actually own these though, just going off what I've read in /r/headphones - which you might want to do some research there too)

Neither of those are actively noise cancelling but just by being in ear monitors they will reduce a lot of noise since they are shoved up in your ear canal, especially if you get some foam tips like New Bee or Comply.

There are hundreds of options out there so this is a deep rabbit hole to fall in but I think you can't really go wrong with the T2s as your first pair, then go from there depending on what kind of sound signature you want.

If you want to go the headphone route, Tin Audio T2s are some of the best budget audiophile earbuds out there, and will sound way better than cheap bluetooth earbuds.

The foam ear tips will have best noise cancelling likely. They are more neutral sounding - so better balance. Perhaps a bit light in the bass.

If you can go up to $60, these, NuForcexMassdrop EDC have good bass, but are less balanced.

Tin T2 is cheap and is much easier to listen to than the Tin T3. The t3 stings my ears with the treble. The T2 is perfect for gaming but has weak-ish bass.

Tin T2 is one of the best for price to performance, but it's not for everyone. The sound signature is flat and for some people, it's lacking on bass. In exchange though, it gives you amazing clarity and neutral sound.
It will depend on the music you mostly listen to.

Note that the T2s' nozzles are pretty wide, so if you have narrow ear canals they might not fit.

I think if you like the signature of the T2, you’ll like the T3. It drops the treble and the bass response seems more apparent and fuller given the lower treble response. In general, they sound similar enough except for the lower treble, which is now controlled by a BA and not the DD.

It’s still a brighter IEM, but not as bright as the T2 Pro.

Some sibilance in “Teardrop” and Liz Fraser vocals in the massive attack song. Bass sounds much better than T2/Pro.

“Unfinished Symphony” - the intro hits hard now with better rumble.

“You and Tequila” - Kenny Chesney’s voice sounds really nice. More fuller than previous iterations. Guitars sound slightly harsh but doesnt bother me too much. (see CL2 for what bothers me)

“Miles Away” - Krysta Nicks - strings sound nice and detailed. Voice is a little harsh and a tad sibilant.

“Pearl Lakes” - U137 - Sounds good to me. No vocals, so no sibilance/harsh vocal issues. Fuller sound than previous.

Seriously, genuinely fantastic IEMs/headphones. $45-50, they use MMCX connectors, so you can upgrade them to wireless if you want to/when you have the cash.

I can't recommend the headphones enough. Honestly, they sound just as good as my Grado SR80e... and that hurts me to say, given the Grados cost twice as much. The only thing the Grados have on my T2's is a slightly better soundstage/depth of sound. That's it. Period.

So I'm in the same boat as you - plan on buying the next oneplus model, looking for new bluetooth buds/iems. Keep in mind, I'm not sure if these are available where you are, but it was suggested to me to look at TIN Audio T2 which come with a detachable cable, and also pick up the TRN BT3 bluetooth cable to use with them. That might be stretching your budget, but that's one of the options I'm looking at. Also considering the Aukey Latitude set and Shure SE112 (on the very tip top of my budget). Not sure how much I like the "collar" on the TRN BT3.

Just not sure where to land, so I'll be following this thread hoping to get some ideas myself!

How do you listen to your phone? Headphones, speakers, built-in speakers? These are good over ear headphones, but they are open backed, meaning other people can hear what you are listening to.

These are good in ear phones, well within budget. There are dac/amps to power speakers and/or headphones, or active speakers that contain dac/amp, or bluetooth speakers, none of which I can offer much help with.
