It's not like it's highly publicized for obvious reasons. Read Live From New York. They have quite a few mentions of it happening, usually when it results in a terrible show. Every show starts with the host meeting the cast and the writers to pitch ideas... most people with enough clout to host SNL have people who write for them, who then pitch ideas. It's pretty regular. Also, pretty regular is Lorne taking the side of the host when it comes to what sketches make the cut. What's unusual is the writers selling out the host for pushing through an unfunny sketch.

Book: Live from New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live

Can't promise more stories like this. I saw the excerpt on a blog post.

Reading books will make you smarter. Just by being a reader you will improve yourself.

If you want to be smarter, find something fun and get in the habit of reading for pleasure.

If you like Sitcoms, start with something like Live From New York or The Simpsons: An Uncensored Unauthorized History to get you started. Fascinating books about funny television.

> He's only been disliked since he was on a recent American tv show called Community

That is definitely not true. People have known Chevy Chase was a dick for quite some time. I'll give you that people thought he was a great comedian in the 80s and early 90s though. His behavior became fairly well known soon after that.

Community was not the beginning of people hating him, though.

EDIT: I believe a lot of credit can probably go to this book: http://www.amazon.com/Live-From-New-York-Uncensored/dp/0316735655 - IIRC, it had some pretty damning stuff about Chevy's time on SNL.

Not about Belushi specifically but has a bunch of behind the scenes stuff that is incredibly interesting (and hilarious) and a lot about all the famous cast members including the dead ones e.g. Farley and Belushi, I highly recommend it. It's very long too, chock full of interesting history!

Live from New York It's current through 2003, but has all kinds of interesting stuff. 500 pages, but I didn't get bored.

It's not about sitcoms, but Alan Sepinwall's The Revolution Was Televised is a fantastic look at the dramas of the last twenty years or so, and features interviews with the creators and others involved with the shows. Great behind-the-scenes information, and also an interesting look at how TV has changed.

And if you like oral histories, Live From New York is an amazing one all about Saturday Night Live.

Side note, I read an excellent book called "Live from New York" that's a VERY thorough history of SNL as told through interviews of previous cast members and NBC execs. SO GOOD. If you're a fan of the old school SNL, which I think you are, definitely check it out. It's a bigass book, but it goes so fast because it's pure entertainment. So many insider stories.

I remember reading in the book, Live From New York that the three favorite guest hosts on Saturday Night Live, according to the cast, were Alec Baldwin, Christopher Walken and Tom Hanks.

Though I believe the original and the Hartman years were the best, I also really enjoyed the late 90s through mid 2000s, basically the Fey-Fallon-Meyers-Ferrell-Parnell years.

Awesome, helpful link

Also, the book Live From New York: An Uncensored History is awesome.
