I spent way too much time on this, but let's see how your claim plays out.

2. Akai MPK249 $400
2. Yamaha P71 $415
3. 21.5 inch iMac $1100 (although this is the base model, probably a good estimate)
3. Edifier R1280T Near Field Monitors $99
5. Asus 24" monitor $130x5=$650
4. Logitech G27 I'm going to say around $300, even though Amazon has it listed for nearly $1000. Seems like the MSRP a few years ago was $300-$400.

  1. Logitech G Saitek X52 Flight Control System $150
  2. Logitech C600 $30
  3. Opolar F401 $12
  4. Logitech G610 $90, although some versions on amazon are closer to $60
  5. (I couldn't figure out what the other keyboard is, but it's probably junk that the OP didn't spend a lot of money on.)
  6. Logitech Z623 $100 (I think these are right)
  7. HTC Vive $500
  8. Logitech Z-2300 $180 MSRP, I'm fairly certain that I'm wrong about this one though
  9. Wireless Xbox Controller $42

Add in like $1000 for each desk and $2000 for each computer we don't see (assuming there are two), that gets us to a total of $11,068.

There is a laptop bag stashed on the left side of the frame, so maybe it's a $9000 laptop.

|What games/sims are the most life like?

  • iracing
  • rfactor 2
  • assetto corsa
  • game stock car 2013/extreme

All of the above games are more or less the most popular games with the best physics. They all have their up and downsides. They are all miles ahead of any codemasters f1 game or forza. They also all offer the ability to drive open-wheel cars, although some games require mods or dlc to do so.

    | What wheels are the best?

If you want a good xbox one compatible wheel then you're basically looking at the Thrustmaster TX. It has a really good belt driven system and has a detachable rim. The downside is you need to buy a separate set of pedals and shifter if you want to drive manual. If you want something less expensive, the best bang for your buck IMO is the Logitech G27, but it is PC/PS3 only.

    |How much cost is associated with sim racing?

Well essentially you need a wheel and a game. A good wheel will set you back anywhere between $200-$700, and most games are between $20-$60.

If you want participate in competitive online racing, you are basically going to have to go with iracing. They have by far the best multiplayer. However, you have to pay a subscription fee and must buy most of the tracks/cars separately. This is where cost can get out of hand.

I have a lot of fun with a pretty basic setup, however the sky is the limit as far as spending goes. But no matter how much you do end up spending, it will be a fraction of the cost of a trackday weekend.

My friend and I play Euro Truck Sim 2 with the Logitech Driving Force GT. It's got 900° rotation (which is actually more than most of the trucks in that game, but it is tweakable in the options to line it up perfectly) and the shifter works really well too, if not simplistically. The Logitech G27 is pretty good too, but I've found that the 6-position shifter can be picky about the clutch. There's no analog use of the clutch, it reads it as either a digital up or down, and if you release the clutch before getting the stick all the way into the gear you want, it will just pop you into neutral. I suppose if you're really looking for immersion though, that would be the wheel to go with.

Logitech Driving Force GT (DFGT)

As others have mentioned, the Logitech Driving Force GT is generally considered to be the cheapest decent wheel you can get. The force feedback is good, it has 900degrees of rotation, has plenty of button, paddles, sequential gear shifter, and of course pedals. The steering wheel itself has a rubber texture that gives lots of grip and feels like great quality relative to cheaper wheels.

The only real negative about the wheel is that the pedals aren't that great. For someone's first time wheel, it isn't that much of a problem, but if you do become more serious about/frequently play racing games with a wheel, especially with racing simulators, you will find yourself wanting better pedals very quickly. If that happens it is possible to replace them with a better set of pedals such as Fanatec pedals.

The DFGT are out of stock on Amazon.com, but when it was in stock it was $150usd or less, and you can grab a used one off ebay for $100-200. Worryingly, considering people are selling this on ebay for $200, it seems there might be a shortage of DFGT's being sold or they've stopped being produced.

Logitech G27

If you are going to play a lot with the wheel, or want something a bit better, then there is the Logitech G27. The G27 has much better pedals, a clutch, and features a H-pattern gear shifter.

The G27 is currently $245usd on Amazon, is often on sale for about $200usd and I have seen it on offer in the US for as low as $170 from other outlets.

If you can't get a new DFGT for $150 and have to pay near $200 for a used one, given that a new G27 can be had for $200-$240, I would definitely without a doubt get the G27.

Can confirm, wheel in the picture is a Logitech G27 Racing Wheel, great wheel to use as an entry level to sim racing, but has a whole lotta wires and can cause a lot of mess when you screw/unscrew it all in :( Been looking for a stand like what I presume that person has for ages.

This beats the historical low on amazon.ca according to this. And 20 dollars less than a used one I was just eyeing up. Will probably end up ordering this, thanks for the post.

u/02J · 5 pointsr/gaming

Nice.

I lived in the original GT for months after release yet I haven't followed GT5 much and haven't gotten into any other racer since.

At 17, never having owned a car, racing with a gamepad was acceptable. At 30, having become something of a car guy I can't fathom playing a racer without a wheel.

The one I had my eye on has gone up $40 in a week (not entirely unexpected).

It turns the game into a $400 rather than $60 proposition.

Decisions, decisions.

u/pagonda · 5 pointsr/cars

The Logitech G27 has been on sale right for $200 the past two or three days on Amazon and Newegg

u/VikingCoder · 4 pointsr/oculus

You're potentially talking about different games. It might be that you're complaining that TF2 doesn't have Wii Balance Board inputs, if you get what I mean.

This is the first VR Input I'm thinking of maybe getting. Pretty sure it would work just fine with the Oculus or the Vive.

This will maybe be the second VRInput I'll get.

And my point is that both of those controllers are better than the HTC / Steam Lighthouse controllers, for flight- and car- based games.

So, it may be the difference between mouse+keyboard, vs console controller, vs Wii remotes. They're VERY DIFFERENT, and they're suited to different games.

I CAN'T play a FPS with a console controller or a Wii. I just can't make myself do it. I love keyboard+mouse just so, so much.

What will I want for a FPS with VR? I have no idea!

But for a flight sim, or a car sim, I want a real flight stick, or a real steering wheel.

EDIT: Then again, I sure hope the games I'm playing know exactly what kind of controller I'm using, and exactly where it is, so they can be rendered perfectly in VR... So yeah, maybe they will have Lighthouse positioning on them...? But not so I can pick them up and swing them around!

The biggest question is: How committed is he, and what is his price range?

With wheels, there are a few things to take into account. There are two methods of driving force feedback: gears, and belts.

  • Gears are relatively old technology. They are simple, reliable, and cheap, but provide a low-fi FFB experience. The teeth in the gears are very distinct in the feedback you get: as you turn the wheel, you will get a strong vibration as the gears mesh together. Gears also have rather limited strength in the FFB, even cranked up they aren't very strong. Gears also have gaps in their force feedback where you will not get any response whatsoever, often times this is the middle.

  • Belt driven wheels are a much newer and more advanced design. They really emerged only in the last 3 or 4 years in significant quantities. Belts have smooth, analog-like feedback compared to the ratchety, noisy operation of gear based wheels. They have much stronger, and much more realistic FFB. Their only cons are price, and reliability, and in the case of the early belt-driven wheels, there was some noticeable lag on the FFB. Being more complex, they may have more reliability issues, but in the vast majority of cases, they won't have any problems. Otherwise, belts are wholly superior to gear based wheels. The wheels' response will be much smoother, and much more enjoyable overall.

I have done significant research on all the major wheels available today. And if you want to go cheap, the Black Momo or DFGT are your best choices. If you are going gear based, stick to $100 or less if possible. Any more, and you should really just skip right to belt-driven wheels. The Black Momo is not considered a "desirable" wheel, and they are plentiful. Thus, it's easy to find them cheaply; I have seen them as low as $50. I'd say amongst cheap gear wheels, the Momo is probably your best bet. I have had one for almost a decade now and it's holding up well, and I have no problems doing well in iRacing with it, despite its low steering lock. It does everything you need it to as a beginner, and is built pretty well.

The DFGT is very similar mechanically to the Momo, the most notable difference being that it has 900 degrees of rotation, and does not have shifter paddles like the Momo. It only has buttons. However, the DFGT has a strong reputation and is in high demand, and since it has been discontinued, the price is quite high. It is possible to find them for $100 on Craigslist or other private sellers, but even the cheapest used on Amazon is $150. If you can find a DFGT for $100, I would go for it, but I wouldn't pay any more for one for a few reasons.

Finally, the one people always seem to recommend, the G27. At the time of its release, the G27 was one of the better wheels available on the market, and it was great value. However, fastforward to modern day, the G27 is about 5 years old, and its almost identical predecessor, the G25, is 8 years old. In the interim since its release, belt-driven wheels have begun mass-production and their prices have gone down significantly, and now belt-driven wheels price-match the G27, and significantly outperform it as far as FFB goes.

The G27 was, and still is a great wheel, but it is an old design and there are much better options now. And at the end of the day, being gear-driven, it plays by the same rules, and has the same characteristics as the far cheaper Momo and DFGT, although it is slightly more refined. This means that the G27 isn't really that great of a contender in the current market anymore at its list price. Gears are only advantageous for their price, and the G27's relatively high cost undermines this. If you can find a G27 for $150 or less, then you would have a great deal, but do not pay $200 or more for one, because at that point you really should be getting the Fanatec 911 GT3 + CS pedal bundle for $225 or so, or just going all the way to the Thrustmaster TX (which also comes with pedals) for $300. Both are significant upgrades from the G27.

Here are some links: the "Black" MOMO Racing, Driving Force GT, and Logitech G25/G27.

The 911 GT3 + pedal bundle can be found here for $230, $4 less than the G27 is selling for on Amazon right now. It is quite a big step up from the G27, but it is one of the older mass-produced Belt-driven wheels on the market, so it won't be as refined as the much newer model, the Thrustmaster TX, is.

The TX is the new kid on the block and combines one of the best "bases" (basically the entire housing with the motor and belts inside, everything but the wheel, in essence) on the market, with a really low price. It's listed at $300, but you could probably find it on Craigslist or Ebay for less, or you could wait for an official sale on Amazon or some other retailer. The TX is by far the best value for your money now as far as wheel quality goes, it is only $66 more expensive than the G27 at list price, but you will get a drastically better driving experience with it. The TX's FFB is the best in the sub $500 market. As far as value goes, I would recommend the TX wholeheartedly. Users who have upgraded from the G27 to the TX have talked about a "drastic improvement" in quality, I can provide links if you would like.

The main criticism of the TX is the lack of clutch pedal and general low quality pedals. A "progressive brake" mod has been created for the TX pedals which gives them a great, much more realistic feel, and makes them a decent set of pedals. This mod is DIY and can be done for $10. Once the mod is performed, the TX package is pretty strong overall. You get a decent progressive brake with some of the best FFB on the market for $300 or less, what more do you want?

If you want to see a video of the TX in action and an indepth review, check out this video.

I know this was a long post, but I wanted to encompass the current state of the wheel market as completely as I could.

    In summary:

The only remaining selling point of gear-driven wheels is price, and even then the gap is shrinking rapidly. If you are looking to spend $150 or under, get a gear based wheel. Ideally, a Black Momo or Driving Force GT. If you can find a Logitech G27 for $150 or less, go for it, however, do not spend more than $150 on a gear based wheel.

We're at that awkward phase where the new tech has arrived and is becoming readily available, but the old tech hasn't had time to compensate by dropping prices, sort of like video tapes and DVD's being sold simultaneously. A DVD player would only be marginally more expensive, but provides a significantly upgraded experience from VHS.

Belt driven wheels are superior in every way other than price, and perhaps, reliability. If you are looking to spend more than $150, go for the Fanatec 911 GT3 for $175, and optionally the 911 GT3 + pedal bundle for $230. If you are looking at +$250, go for a Thrustmaster TX for $300.

I hope you found this helpful! Feel free to respond or PM me if you have any other questions. I'm quite familiar with most of the hardware on the market today.

I've got one as well, so I figure I might as well chime in on it.

Picked mine up open box from a local retailer for ~$80 a couple years ago. Definitely worth it at that price. The pedals are pretty crap, but the wheel is solid and the force feedback works great. The clamps can be a bit of a pain as well, but they do work alright once you get them attached solidly.

The sequential shifter works alright as well, and for the price it's not something I can complain about.

In the end, I think for the Force GT it really comes down to whether or not you can get a good price on it. ~$100 is about where I'd value it. If you've got the money to spend, Logitech's G27 set is definitely a huge step up, and a much higher quality product overall.

u/graffiti81 · 3 pointsr/simracing

The MSRP on the G27 was around $250. Amazon had them for $238 when I bought mine on the 26th. Here's the price history..

The G29 is $350 AND doesn't include a shifter, which is an additional $75.

So a similar setup with a G29 would be $425ish, whereas the G27 is like $250.

u/Aeroshock · 3 pointsr/oculus

Logitech's G27 makes up the wheel, shifter, and pedals. Costs about $230.

u/Titan357 · 3 pointsr/EuroTruck2

>Definitely not looking to spend $400

What wheel are you looking at that costs $400?.
For $400 I could gt a track IR and a wheel and still have some money left over.

Might as well pickup a wired 360 controller, since its plug and play and works with lots of pc games (ETS2 included). I started out using KB/M, went to my wired 360 controller and now I have a track IR, G27 and a Obutto Ozone.

You don't need to have a wheel to play ETS2, but it sure makes the game way more fun/immersive to physically row through gears, use the clutch and work the wheel.

A used G27 is in your budget range

[The G29 is a tad above your budget and the shifter is sold seperately.] (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Driving-Force-Wheel-941-000110/dp/B00Z0UWWYC/ref=pd_sim_147_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41W5xAz9tML&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=048N183R0CFFT6E365VZ)

Games recommended: The Crew and/or Driveclub. Honestly, if you want a very good racing set for realistic racing, prepare to save up some money. It's better to buy one very good product instead of multiple crappy ones because they keep breaking down etc.

u/OM_NOM_TOILET_PAPER · 3 pointsr/oculus

Heck, only the racing wheel (G27, the most popular one) is $240 and it was released four years ago. Now compare the amount of games which are controlled with it (racing games) to games which could be controlled with Omni (FPSes & RPGs).

u/samfreez · 3 pointsr/gaming

Do you have a budget, and would you be playing too?

The Logitech Momo is a good wheel. I've had mine for eons, although it finally started to die on me (more specifically, the cable got mangled due to cats and I'm too lazy to fix it again) so I replaced it with a far-superior G27 (https://smile.amazon.com/Logitech-941-000045-G27-Racing-Wheel/dp/B001NT9TK4)

If you can swing it, the 900 degree rotation on the G27 is far more fun to use than the 180 degree-or-so rotation on the Momo, but the Momo is a solid wheel, and a good force feedback option for a kid, IMO.

u/22quack · 3 pointsr/granturismo

Based on what I've seen online, your wheel does not seem to have force feedback (the wheel has a motor inside that emulates the forces felt by the driver), so this by itself makes drifting far more difficult. You cannot feel when the tires are grabbing at all outside of vibrations in the wheel.

I personally recommend the Logitech Driving Force GT since it's inexpensive (well, it was $100 or so a while ago... You can still buy one used), but you will definitely need a table to mount it to. The G27 is a really nice option as well since it's actually on sale right now.

Also, you will definitely need lots and lots of practice before you can expect to successfully start drifting. The cars and setups definitely make it easier to drift, but the biggest factor, no matter what, is the driver (seeing as serious car damage does not really exist in GT6). Try to do a couple runs everyday, looking up videos on how to start and definitely watch Drift Bible in its entirety at least once.

I will say that I find drifting in GT5/GT6 to be pretty difficult, and I'm pretty comfortable with sliding in Live for Speed. Even while I was learning in that, it was a pretty long process to get it down (~30-60 minutes each day for a couple weeks), but even if you never drift again in the game after learning it, your driving through car control will definitely improve.

Sorry for the long text, but I figured I'd try to be fairly detailed since no one else has responded. I'll update the comment with links in a second...

As with most things, it depends on your budget. Popular choices are the Driving Force GT and the Logitech G27. I started out with the Driving force, then upgraded to the G27 when I build a full sim rig with a seat and a frame.

One thing I can say with confidence is that switching to a FFB wheel from a regular controller is literally a game changer. Its awesome and I highly recommend it!

u/Satsumomo · 2 pointsr/videos

Here's a kinda old buying guide, but you can get the whole wheel + pedals + shifter combo for about $230 on Amazon.

There is a cheaper option, the Driving Force GT, which for some reason, a bunch of retailers are trying to sell for $200-$250. Never pay more than $100 for a DFGT.

u/Lord_Bro · 2 pointsr/assettocorsa

As a Driving Force GT owner I second this. I wish I would have bought the G27 instead. I've heard people say the FFB is very similar if a bit smoother, and the wheel is generally a bit more quiet than the DFGT. The real bonus comes from having an H-shifter and 3rd pedal to play around with.

I'm sure if I had just bought a G27 I wouldn't be looking to get something new now, but I'm outgrowing my DFGT. (also the G27 is still on sale on Amazon)

I have no words for this. This has to be the best giveaway I have ever seen. At this point I'm more curious to the profit you made then actually entering this giveaway! I hope that one day I can do something this big, but as of now life is expensive.

I seriously have no clue what to ask for. Of course I have some big wishes and such, but I'm gonna ask for something small. Well.. small compared to the other requests :D

I love driving games and I have been playing a lot of American Truck Simulator lately, but I'm stuck with my controller or keyboard. I would love to make an upgrade. Using an actual steering wheel, pedals and maybe even shifting gears would make my experience a lot better.

I would be happy with this one: Thrustmaster Force Wheel

But if you feel really generous the Logitech G27 Racing Wheel would most likely make me cry out happiness!

Whether I don't win or not doesn't even matter. What you are doing is something I haven't experienced on the internet before and I have been here for quite some years now! So once again thank you for doing this and I wish you the best in life!

I wonder if he used the standard controller to play or a racing wheel.

u/TootsyPoopster · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

T150 thrustmaster (175 from newegg, bestbuy will honor in store price match), I went dirt cheap because I am new to the sim gig and didn't want to put up a ton of cash if I didn't like it. Now I am looking at the OSW open source wheels which is like a $1200 solution.

VR racing is my favorite use of virtual reality.

There are belt/gear driven wheels and direct drive wheels. There are a few options between 150-500 bucks, all of them will get the job done the same. If you are never going to upgrade but you want a good wheel, get a $300+ belt/gear wheel with pedal package.

Most common,

G27
or
T300

There are various models and packages both thrustmaster and logitec offer more expensive standalone wheels but at $500 dollars you start to get into premium belt/gear territory.

Fanatec CSL

Then there is the ultimate, direct drive. Fanatec just released a new wheel and there are others but we are talking 1k+ for the wheel alone.

OSW sumucube is an open source racing wheel kitted together for the user. You can find the OSW kit guide but there are a lot of parts to build and learning to go with it, the kit saves the trouble but is less expensive than other direct drive offerings.

TL;DR It is all based on price point, $150, $300, $500, $1000. I chose to go the cheapest possible route, use it until I can afford the upgrade or it breaks.

Yes, but console gamers have never had to purchase additional input devices to have new experiences on their platform. No console manufacturer has ever expanded on their initial controllers to try to provide a more robust experience.

Also, KB/M is the superior control scheme for all games. Developers should be expected to release a PC game with KB/M controls that are flawless for the genre. There is no reason that any other input mechanism might enhance any PC gaming experience.

edit: This is also not KB/M but I guarantee you would like to experience it.

G920 is newer but it looks like it doesn't come with a manual shifter anymore.

u/ChulaK · 1 pointr/xboxone

I haven't played Forza since the original Xbox, so any update since then about supported Force Feedback? Not the little rumbling thingy, I mean true feedback for a wheel controller like the Logitech G27. So far it's the only thing really keeping me away from buying any racing games on any Xbox since Forza 1.

u/quffy · 1 pointr/assettocorsa

Yes it went up on price, but on amazon you find it cheaper than logitech website: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-941-000045-G27-Racing-Wheel/dp/B001NT9TK4

Just a heads up--

Logitech G27 is on sale at Amazon for $192 for January 27th. I know a lot of people have credit cards with 5% cash back at Amazon as well. If you're in a state without Amazon tax, that'd be $183 delivered to your door.

u/ItWasDumblydore · 1 pointr/The_Crew

Lucky you the cheapest one in canada is 240$ for amazon...

To OP, I would definitely suggest a G27 to you, its within your price range(Depending on your location) and it has a ton to offer you, not to mention pretty solid construction with a stainless steel leather wrapped wheel and steel pedals. the H-Shifter and Manual clutch is an absolute blast and makes drifting soooooo much fun, and just makes you feel so much more involved.

PS: I have owned a cheaper wheel for years and recently bought the G27, and I was so so so happy that I decided to put down the money on it.

Really any of the Codemasters F1 games are great on PC if you just want to race F1 cars. If you want more realism but also use other cars, you could always try iRacing or the rFactor games. Personally, I've always loved playing F1 2012 and F1 2013.

As for racing wheels, I don't personally own one; however, my cousin has the Logitech G27 wheel which I've used while playing iRacing and I really liked it. It's on the more expensive side though: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-941-000045-G27-Racing-Wheel/dp/B001NT9TK4?ie=UTF8&keywords=logitech%20racing%20wheel&qid=1459282064&ref_=sr_1_4&sr=8-4

It's hard to really advise knowing there are deffective units out there, but take a look at this one for PC https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-941-000045-G27-Racing-Wheel/dp/B001NT9TK4

u/RedStag00 · 1 pointr/oculus

They're more expensive than you might think. The G27, which is the highest recommended setup, costs $225

u/hangerbaby · 1 pointr/pcgaming

I just got the logitech for $20 at a garage sale, didn't shop around much but I love it.

Pretty sure its this thing

The Logitech G27 and G25 racing wheels have had a lot of good reviews. If you're into racing games they would probably be a lot of fun. I'd stay away from Logitech flight joysticks as there seem to be a lot better options from competitors like Thrustmaster.

u/RobertM525 · 1 pointr/gaming

You mean like this? (PS3/PC rather than XB360, I know.)

Not that I've used it, but it sure looks nice. ;)

Whatcha got on the following:

Thrustmaster T150

These things are hard to come by on here. This is the cheapest I can find it right now.

Good luck!

u/makerecon · 1 pointr/simracing

That' only $25 cheaper than retailer, for a new unit. Yes it is a great wheel in that price point. Even if you want to upgrade later on each piece can be replaced individually. There is no competition at this price point that gets you wheel, pedals, H shifter.

u/DragonTamerMCT · 1 pointr/oculus

Nice find!

Also for those of you that hate using sites you don't know, it's currently only 10$ more on amazon, which is also still a good price.

Quick edit: Link

u/Kumorigoe · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

>I am more then willing to pay what it takes to get a good system...

Okay, that's good

>...but after looking online; everything seems to be 1,500 - 2000$ for a good setup. Seems like their must be something a little bit better priced then that??

And you've just contradicted yourself.

PC sims, whether you're talking about flying, racing, train conducting, etc run the gamut from "cheap" to "I could buy a decent used car for that money"

Now, on the one end of the spectrum, you could go out and pick up something like a Logitech G27, which includes all the bits you specified. This is the older model, but the G29 doesn't include the shifter.

On the other end of the spectrum is where things can get pricey. Now you're looking at separate wheels and wheel bases, high-end belt-driven force feedback systems, fully mechanical shifters, gas-driven pedals, even full-motion cockpits. Here is a vendor in Canada that sells the "big boy" gear.

My suggestion? Start with something like the G27 and decide from there if you want to spend more.

u/[deleted] · 0 pointsr/assettocorsa

This game is awful with a gamepad. If you think it's good with a gamepad, wait until you try it with a wheel. Also I recommend a DFGT for a starter (might be able to find on craigslist for less than $100) as many will but it does not have a clutch. If you want a clutch, the next best value-oriented option is the logitech g27 but that will run you $200+ easily

u/sijonda · -1 pointsr/trucksim
u/Kretenn · -2 pointsr/xboxone

Logitech G27 which has a clutch and stick shift for $200 vs $400 thrustmaster that doesn't have either.
