Another video of good general rallying on YouTube.

Good sense of speed through a narrow forest, you can hear the frantic pacenotes (the things the "passenger" is telling the driver so the driver knows what's up ahead), you can see the driver's current gear on the dashboard, and a bit of the driver's footwork. This might help you understand what driving in rally is like.

And if you want to try rallying virtually, check out Richard Burns Rally! It's still considered one of the best rally simulators to date, and it's only about US$5 on Amazon. It was released in 2004, so most computers should be able to run it.

If you decide to buy Richard Burns Rally, considered looking at game mods. A group of modders in France recently released RSRBR 2013 which adds new cars, new tracks, and improved physics. This may need a little more powerful computer to run.

I bought a Logitech Driving Force GT steering wheel on eBay for about $85. It's a great starter wheel with nice force feedback that will help you feel your car better as you drive.

Come by /r/simracing, too!

Absolutely. A Logitech driving force GT is a good starting wheel.

u/audiyon · 13 pointsr/Games

My friend and I play Euro Truck Sim 2 with the Logitech Driving Force GT. It's got 900° rotation (which is actually more than most of the trucks in that game, but it is tweakable in the options to line it up perfectly) and the shifter works really well too, if not simplistically. The Logitech G27 is pretty good too, but I've found that the 6-position shifter can be picky about the clutch. There's no analog use of the clutch, it reads it as either a digital up or down, and if you release the clutch before getting the stick all the way into the gear you want, it will just pop you into neutral. I suppose if you're really looking for immersion though, that would be the wheel to go with.

u/GarretJax · 10 pointsr/PS3

It depends on how much you are willing to spend. The Logitech G27 is one of the best available at a price point of about $200-$300 depending on sales and rebates. Fanatec makes some nice racing wheels, but are a bit pricey. If you are looking for a quality wheel at a lower price you may be able to find a used G27 or G25. Or you can go with the Logitech PlayStation 3 Driving Force GT. The force feedback works very well and its a decent wheel, but it doesn't have a six gear box or clutch. But it does have paddle (button) shifters and a sequential shifter. The pedals aren't nearly as nice as the G27 or G25. But it does have some specific features for GT5 that the other wheels don't offer. You can get this one for about $70-$100 depending on rebates and such.

u/UtopianWarrior · 9 pointsr/GameDeals

Unless you're willing to spend several hundred dollars, the Logitech Driving Force GT is probably the best option. Force feedback, 900 degrees motion, two pedals and plenty of buttons for around $100.

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-PlayStation-Driving-Force-Racing-3/dp/B0015HYPOO

It says "Playstation 3", but it's compatible with PC and PS2 as well.

Unfortunately it's not manufactured anymore, but you might be able to find a decent used one.

u/rabs38 · 9 pointsr/NASCAR

iRacing is great, but before you jump in some things to know. A steering wheel such as the driving force GT (best value for a wheel) is 100% essential. I have linked below.

The service is subscription and micro-transactions based. Its literally the worst of both worlds, and everything is expensive. They charge you to host a race, its insane.

However, the racing is generally very clean. Splits break you into skill groups that provide good racing, and their are enough fixed set-up classes that you can race without learning how to be a crew chief.

The most important thing is that Iracing is super fun. Before my first few races, I was nervous as shit. You don't want to ruin anyone elses race by driving recklessly.

To me, the trucks were the most fun I don't feel like I really had the skill to race the cup car competitively.

Logitech Driving Force GT (DFGT)

As others have mentioned, the Logitech Driving Force GT is generally considered to be the cheapest decent wheel you can get. The force feedback is good, it has 900degrees of rotation, has plenty of button, paddles, sequential gear shifter, and of course pedals. The steering wheel itself has a rubber texture that gives lots of grip and feels like great quality relative to cheaper wheels.

The only real negative about the wheel is that the pedals aren't that great. For someone's first time wheel, it isn't that much of a problem, but if you do become more serious about/frequently play racing games with a wheel, especially with racing simulators, you will find yourself wanting better pedals very quickly. If that happens it is possible to replace them with a better set of pedals such as Fanatec pedals.

The DFGT are out of stock on Amazon.com, but when it was in stock it was $150usd or less, and you can grab a used one off ebay for $100-200. Worryingly, considering people are selling this on ebay for $200, it seems there might be a shortage of DFGT's being sold or they've stopped being produced.

Logitech G27

If you are going to play a lot with the wheel, or want something a bit better, then there is the Logitech G27. The G27 has much better pedals, a clutch, and features a H-pattern gear shifter.

The G27 is currently $245usd on Amazon, is often on sale for about $200usd and I have seen it on offer in the US for as low as $170 from other outlets.

If you can't get a new DFGT for $150 and have to pay near $200 for a used one, given that a new G27 can be had for $200-$240, I would definitely without a doubt get the G27.

u/clee290 · 5 pointsr/GameDeals

I've seen this one recommended quite a bit: Logitech Driving Force GT. Especially to those not looking to spend a few hundred dollars on a wheel. At full price, it still seems expensive, so you may want to wait for a sale. Or, if you don't mind a used wheel, I've seen used one go for $70 or so.

u/SgtMustang · 4 pointsr/iRacing

The biggest question is: How committed is he, and what is his price range?

With wheels, there are a few things to take into account. There are two methods of driving force feedback: gears, and belts.

  • Gears are relatively old technology. They are simple, reliable, and cheap, but provide a low-fi FFB experience. The teeth in the gears are very distinct in the feedback you get: as you turn the wheel, you will get a strong vibration as the gears mesh together. Gears also have rather limited strength in the FFB, even cranked up they aren't very strong. Gears also have gaps in their force feedback where you will not get any response whatsoever, often times this is the middle.

  • Belt driven wheels are a much newer and more advanced design. They really emerged only in the last 3 or 4 years in significant quantities. Belts have smooth, analog-like feedback compared to the ratchety, noisy operation of gear based wheels. They have much stronger, and much more realistic FFB. Their only cons are price, and reliability, and in the case of the early belt-driven wheels, there was some noticeable lag on the FFB. Being more complex, they may have more reliability issues, but in the vast majority of cases, they won't have any problems. Otherwise, belts are wholly superior to gear based wheels. The wheels' response will be much smoother, and much more enjoyable overall.

I have done significant research on all the major wheels available today. And if you want to go cheap, the Black Momo or DFGT are your best choices. If you are going gear based, stick to $100 or less if possible. Any more, and you should really just skip right to belt-driven wheels. The Black Momo is not considered a "desirable" wheel, and they are plentiful. Thus, it's easy to find them cheaply; I have seen them as low as $50. I'd say amongst cheap gear wheels, the Momo is probably your best bet. I have had one for almost a decade now and it's holding up well, and I have no problems doing well in iRacing with it, despite its low steering lock. It does everything you need it to as a beginner, and is built pretty well.

The DFGT is very similar mechanically to the Momo, the most notable difference being that it has 900 degrees of rotation, and does not have shifter paddles like the Momo. It only has buttons. However, the DFGT has a strong reputation and is in high demand, and since it has been discontinued, the price is quite high. It is possible to find them for $100 on Craigslist or other private sellers, but even the cheapest used on Amazon is $150. If you can find a DFGT for $100, I would go for it, but I wouldn't pay any more for one for a few reasons.

Finally, the one people always seem to recommend, the G27. At the time of its release, the G27 was one of the better wheels available on the market, and it was great value. However, fastforward to modern day, the G27 is about 5 years old, and its almost identical predecessor, the G25, is 8 years old. In the interim since its release, belt-driven wheels have begun mass-production and their prices have gone down significantly, and now belt-driven wheels price-match the G27, and significantly outperform it as far as FFB goes.

The G27 was, and still is a great wheel, but it is an old design and there are much better options now. And at the end of the day, being gear-driven, it plays by the same rules, and has the same characteristics as the far cheaper Momo and DFGT, although it is slightly more refined. This means that the G27 isn't really that great of a contender in the current market anymore at its list price. Gears are only advantageous for their price, and the G27's relatively high cost undermines this. If you can find a G27 for $150 or less, then you would have a great deal, but do not pay $200 or more for one, because at that point you really should be getting the Fanatec 911 GT3 + CS pedal bundle for $225 or so, or just going all the way to the Thrustmaster TX (which also comes with pedals) for $300. Both are significant upgrades from the G27.

Here are some links: the "Black" MOMO Racing, Driving Force GT, and Logitech G25/G27.

The 911 GT3 + pedal bundle can be found here for $230, $4 less than the G27 is selling for on Amazon right now. It is quite a big step up from the G27, but it is one of the older mass-produced Belt-driven wheels on the market, so it won't be as refined as the much newer model, the Thrustmaster TX, is.

The TX is the new kid on the block and combines one of the best "bases" (basically the entire housing with the motor and belts inside, everything but the wheel, in essence) on the market, with a really low price. It's listed at $300, but you could probably find it on Craigslist or Ebay for less, or you could wait for an official sale on Amazon or some other retailer. The TX is by far the best value for your money now as far as wheel quality goes, it is only $66 more expensive than the G27 at list price, but you will get a drastically better driving experience with it. The TX's FFB is the best in the sub $500 market. As far as value goes, I would recommend the TX wholeheartedly. Users who have upgraded from the G27 to the TX have talked about a "drastic improvement" in quality, I can provide links if you would like.

The main criticism of the TX is the lack of clutch pedal and general low quality pedals. A "progressive brake" mod has been created for the TX pedals which gives them a great, much more realistic feel, and makes them a decent set of pedals. This mod is DIY and can be done for $10. Once the mod is performed, the TX package is pretty strong overall. You get a decent progressive brake with some of the best FFB on the market for $300 or less, what more do you want?

If you want to see a video of the TX in action and an indepth review, check out this video.

I know this was a long post, but I wanted to encompass the current state of the wheel market as completely as I could.

    In summary:

The only remaining selling point of gear-driven wheels is price, and even then the gap is shrinking rapidly. If you are looking to spend $150 or under, get a gear based wheel. Ideally, a Black Momo or Driving Force GT. If you can find a Logitech G27 for $150 or less, go for it, however, do not spend more than $150 on a gear based wheel.

We're at that awkward phase where the new tech has arrived and is becoming readily available, but the old tech hasn't had time to compensate by dropping prices, sort of like video tapes and DVD's being sold simultaneously. A DVD player would only be marginally more expensive, but provides a significantly upgraded experience from VHS.

Belt driven wheels are superior in every way other than price, and perhaps, reliability. If you are looking to spend more than $150, go for the Fanatec 911 GT3 for $175, and optionally the 911 GT3 + pedal bundle for $230. If you are looking at +$250, go for a Thrustmaster TX for $300.

I hope you found this helpful! Feel free to respond or PM me if you have any other questions. I'm quite familiar with most of the hardware on the market today.

The Logitech Driving Force GT (DFGT) is a really great, and cheap (compared to the competition). http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-PlayStation-Driving-Force-Racing-3/dp/B0015HYPOO Wheels in general aren't cheap, but they make such a huge difference in sim driving games. In Dirt 3 especially, you can feel when the wheels begin to slip, when the car regains traction, and when you're completely in the air. It is amazing.

I have the Driving Force GT. It's not the best on the market, obviously, but it works flawlessly with ETS2. I bought it for Gran Turismo 5, but use it for everything on PS3 and PC now.

u/22quack · 3 pointsr/granturismo

Based on what I've seen online, your wheel does not seem to have force feedback (the wheel has a motor inside that emulates the forces felt by the driver), so this by itself makes drifting far more difficult. You cannot feel when the tires are grabbing at all outside of vibrations in the wheel.

I personally recommend the Logitech Driving Force GT since it's inexpensive (well, it was $100 or so a while ago... You can still buy one used), but you will definitely need a table to mount it to. The G27 is a really nice option as well since it's actually on sale right now.

Also, you will definitely need lots and lots of practice before you can expect to successfully start drifting. The cars and setups definitely make it easier to drift, but the biggest factor, no matter what, is the driver (seeing as serious car damage does not really exist in GT6). Try to do a couple runs everyday, looking up videos on how to start and definitely watch Drift Bible in its entirety at least once.

I will say that I find drifting in GT5/GT6 to be pretty difficult, and I'm pretty comfortable with sliding in Live for Speed. Even while I was learning in that, it was a pretty long process to get it down (~30-60 minutes each day for a couple weeks), but even if you never drift again in the game after learning it, your driving through car control will definitely improve.

Sorry for the long text, but I figured I'd try to be fairly detailed since no one else has responded. I'll update the comment with links in a second...

u/hurpes · 2 pointsr/self

This + this. Just kidding, it's just practice you'll get used to it. Stick with your neighborhood first, then practice driving to one location you know well, like your school and do it everyday. After that try other locations, and then eventually the highway. Once you feel comfortable driving on the highway, you'll be fine.

u/Gunski · 2 pointsr/gaming

It's the Logitech Driving Force GT. It's made for PS3, but their drivers now support PC. The only thing that's different from the G25/27 is the H-Shifter and the clutch. It has a regular up/down shifter and then the paddles on the back of the wheel. Oh and it costs $200 less =)

Also you don't have to invest in a G27 and a wheel stand if you don't want to invest too much money. The Driving Force GT wheel is significantly cheaper, and you can just attach it to your desk if your desk allows, saving money on a wheel stand as well. The curvature of my desk actually doesn't allow me to attach the wheel with its standard screws, so I simply attached it to a small piece of wood and use C-clamps to attach the wood to my desk. I was able to pick up a Driving Force GT wheel on craigslist for $50, and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. It's great.

Try to see if you can find one near where you live on craigslist for cheaper, or even a G25/G27, as they're both great as well.

u/brendan7_ · 2 pointsr/granturismo

As with most things, it depends on your budget. Popular choices are the Driving Force GT and the Logitech G27. I started out with the Driving force, then upgraded to the G27 when I build a full sim rig with a seat and a frame.

One thing I can say with confidence is that switching to a FFB wheel from a regular controller is literally a game changer. Its awesome and I highly recommend it!

I'm in the process of creating my own game chair, which is based on a black heated leather power adjust bucket seat from a 2006 Honda Accord. The DFGT isn't made anymore, but there are a bunch of Amazon Warehouse deals for them for around $150 shipped. It's a solid wheel to get started with, and you can get new pedals later if you want to upgrade, as they seem to be the biggest complaint about the wheel.

Also, if you want to shell out some dough (like $100), you can buy a wheel, which takes the controller out of the scenario (other than navigating menus). Also most wheels will offer resistance when turning. I don't own one, but I've used one. It makes the experience 1000 times better.

Chiming in on your post a little late. Glad to see your specs surpass the requirements! I have an older steering wheel that I've been using since 2008. It's a logitech ps3 steering wheel with pedals and force feedback. Works like a charm after all these years. I think it came out with the GT5 game. So when looking for steering wheel/pedal combos don't feel like you need to get the most new and expensive set out there. Older generations will work. Here's a link to amazon on what mine is like.

If you're not planning to get into racing games at all, I wouldn't invest in one, but if you are, you can probably find a DFGT used for around 60-70 bucks. It's a force feedback wheel so you can feel bumps in the road and so on, but being on the cheap side, the pedals are kinda cheap.

I got mine for 70 in March, no regrets

u/Vulfilla · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

You could probably get away with a controller. Most of the testers as of right now are still calling it Simcade, though it is striving for simulation physics. Even still most sim games are actually fairly ok on controllers.

When the game comes out pretty much the entirity of /r/simracing and I would recommend the Logitech DFGT for a beginner. It's a $150 wheel with amazing quality. Sometimes as low as $100 on ebay.

u/RobertM525 · 1 pointr/granturismo

> Yeah, I am wondering that myself since Sony havent confirmed if the PS4 will support the G25/G27.

After I saw this, shortly after the Driving Force GT started to disappear from online retailers like Amazon, it basically cemented my needing to wait on getting a wheel.

When the DFGT was around $150 (which it was for quite a while), I might've been able to justify it. (Though adding something like this to the purchase doesn't help.) But the G27 was always out of my price range, unfortunately.

But maybe Logitech will come out with a good DFGT replacement that's 100% PS4 compatible and still goes for the same price as the DFGT did and this will all work out for the best in the long-run! :)
