Logitech makes a washable keyboard, I use one because I'm terrible and keep eating at my desk. You can submerge it in warm water and wash it down with a soft brush or a cloth. It includes a little brush clipped on the back to get under the keys. And this is a prime example why you ask questions instead of making assumptions.

Sometimes the person is a slob and it's a tech solution to a people problem. Other times they have Parkinson or whatever and we have to act like human beings who provide real world solutions to unusual problems.

The rollable types like /u/xxdcmast linked are nice and durable, but not very user friendly. I wouldn't want to be at one all day. I'd look into this logitech.

I have this keyboard because my daughter managed to spill something nasty on my last one and killed it. I decided (when I found this one for cheaper at the time) to try it and she hasn't managed to kill it even though water, soda, and sweet and sour sauce have all made it on to my keyboard.

Impossible to keep him from stealing the keys, a couple were stripped so they didn't even click in anymore. Looked for a "bird-proof" keyboard to no avail. Remember being impressed a few years ago by the rubber-like roll up keyboards and started looking. The rubber ones would probably work the best, but the reviews weren't very inspiring. Hard to press, repeats, etc. Not great for playing games. This one can be put under running water (couldn't even imagine) without damage. Keys are not coming out. Ok, if I let Mongo have his way with the keyboard I am positive he could find a way. At least break them if nothing else. But, he doesn't have quite that opportunity. So, if you have a medium sized bird that likes to steal keyboard keys and fly away with them, making you chase him while he laughs hysterically (ok, I'm presuming), consider this keyboard. Working great, except for the finger malfunctions (can I blame that on a new keyboard? Sure, why not.) get this one.

> UPDATE (3/22/14): Ok, Mongo succeeded in pulling off the key with a squiggly line on it (used for Spanish over vowels/under the Esc key). I stuck it back on, but he kept pulling it. Then, lo and behold, I got a great fix for it. Superglue. Yep, superglue. Turns out the keys have a thin piece of plastic underneath that fit into a slot inside the keyboard. A drop of glue on the 'dimples' on the side of the key, snap into the slot, and we have a very perturbed Quaker Parrot. Not to mention a fully functional, intact keyboard. Oh, and seed shells come right out, even when they are stuck under the key itself. Just tilt and tap. So very happy with this keyboard.

Here is the keyboard. I was a little surprised at how expensive it is now, it was 14 dollars when I bought it.

I got myself one of these and just hold it under the sink whenever I feel like cleaning it.

Laptops are very portable, but not always very durable. Toughbooks are basically made for this. But you don't need a toughbook? Because of the price, or some other reason?

Another options is a PC cart. Get a small tool cart. Get a simple, small PC. You could consider a nettop, or even the Intel NUC. Get a monitor. Get a waterproof keyboard (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Washable-Keyboard-K310-Windows/dp/B008D1JRIO). Use a desk-mounted LCD mount for the monitor (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Washable-Keyboard-K310-Windows/dp/B008D1JRIO) so it can't fall over/off.

I'd also add a UPC for 1) power protection, but also 2) very limited portability.

Now you have a crash cart you can wheel over to where you want, plug it in, and be going. Very resistant to oil/grease/dirt on the keyboard. Less likely to drop it on the floor & break everything.

Depending on the environment, I'd prefer this to a laptop. For a laptop, I'd expect it to break at some point. And if it lasts, it'd be disgusting. And if you need to hook it up to a monitor for some reason, then why have a laptop in the first place.

I love my K310. Price has doubled since I bought it, which is unfortunate--but it's still much cheaper than some of the medical-focused ones listed elsewhere. Prettier, too.

There certainly are washable keyboards, for medical use - for instance, the Logitech K310. Some more expensive ones have circuitry which makes cleaning easier (Cherry J84-2120 for instance - don't know if that one has volume controls). Keyboard Company will deliver to the EU and are well-regarded. Or have a look at WetKeys.

Alternatively, if you're particular about the feel, you might like to look at Hall-effect keyboards. There's a Chinese one with a waterproofed circuit board, made by Ace Pad Tech - the XMIT keyboard that's been on Massdrop is based on it. (The XMIT isn't completely washproof, some of the components are different.) Typing should feel noticeably smoother with these, as there's no silicone shielding to affect the feel. I'm looking for a sub $100 backlit, mechanical keyboard that is black/dark with white keycaps. Would look like this keyboard. It doesn't have to be RGB, but would want the backlight to be white if not. I wouldn't be against buying keycaps myself if I could keep total cost under $100.

No macro keys, but I think your best bet would be something similar to this.

Here you go there's also a cheaper one listed below but Logitech is good.

Laser printed and UV coated keys don't fade like that. None of my keys are faded like that, and I can wash mine. Thanks Best Buy for a great sale. Got this for only $12.

Huh, apparently Logitech has one that's actually designed to be cleaned in a dishwasher, so that's a possibility.

A suggestion, because I have a messy teenager and an even messier 6 year old:

This is the greatest $30 I have ever spent. I just hose it down once a week or so, and no more nasty keyboard. It's had spaghetti o's, mustard, and soda dumped all over it, it just keeps coming back for more.

I have a laptop I plug into a 30-33" tv (I don't remember exact size) on my desk when I'm done working. I use this cheap keyboard and the Taipan. I got a washable keyboard after hating this one.

Medigel is set to middle mouse button, ops packs to back-left, thermal clips to button behind the scroll wheel, missles to 5 (no shortcuts).

Skill 1 is set to Q, 2 to E, 3 to V and the back-left mouse button. The two right mouse buttons are for scripts (spacebar to stay alive, tested one with the Mattock).

It's a Logitech washable keyboard. You can run it though the dishwasher, which is good because I spill beer on it from time to time..

Gah. I want a mechanical keyboard, but I have had too many spills to warrant the cost. I'm pretty good about no food near the keyboard, but cats have a mind of their own, forcing me to resort to a washable keyboard.
