Didn't really think this through lol, had to remove Skullport because I had gone over by $25. I obviously couldn't include some classics, but I tried to make it somewhat varied and accessible for everyone.
As a matter of fact, it is.
[Camelcamelcamel] (https://camelcamelcamel.com/Lords-Waterdeep-Dungeons-Dragons-Board/product/0786959916?context=search) says it's slightly below average, but it definitely has been lower. I picked my copy up for $27 a couple years ago. The $50 price tag is MSRP which Amazon rarely every sells games at. So while they advertise it as a discounted price, it really is just an everyday price.
FYI, folks. My wife may not be happy with me... but I just impulse bought it. Oops.
Pretty good sale on right now at Amazon.

We also used both of the expansions boards from the [Scoundrels of Skullport](

To see gameplay, check out the Tabletop episode.
The Rules PDF is also free online if you'd like to see it.
So ... there are a lot of different Dungeons and Dragons. There's the tabletop game which started it all (pen and paper and dice - you can read about its long and storied history here).
There's a ton of video games from various eras ranging from I think the late 80s, early 90s to present day, including Dungeons and Dragons Online (don't know if that's still up or not).
You can go to GOG.com and find a lot of D&D computer games (and there have been console releases of some of them); Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate are a couple of the D&D computer games.
There also have been several D&D board games to choose from.
So ... as to what you need to start playing, it depends which one!
It's $31.49 today which is a good price with no shipping already but it was $28.92 in my gold box since I had in my wish list I guess.
Lords of Waterdeep won an Origin Award last year for best board game.
You can even see the creators (Rodney and Pete) play with some other WotC employees (1) here and (2) here.
My two cents is that this would be a perfect gift: It's received great reviews. It has available two expansion packs to change up the game play so you'll get more mileage out of your purchase. And if your DM is like most DMs he loves the game and loves D&D and freaking every now and then wouldn't mind just being a player! : )
This allows you and he to play together with or without friends. Hey, speaking of...why not throw him a surprise costume party? Get him one of those Burger King crowns and dub him Lord _____ of Waterdeep for the evening! Then when he opens his present he can actually PLAY a Lord of Waterdeep.
Just a heads up, Amazon has this for around $32.00: Lords of Waterdeep: A Dungeons & Dragons Board Game
There's actually a good amount of fun games for under $40 on Amazon that I would suggest looking at.
These are all pretty popular games and I think they give you a good start into the different genre's of modern board games.
A great resource management game, Lords of Waterdeep! Created by Wizards of the Coast you attempt to gain as many points as possible by the end of a mere six turns. I recommend getting the Scoundrels of Skullport expansion with it as well as it adds some major strategic changes to the game to make it interesting.

That's actually the basis for the board game Lords of Waterdeep, which is an amazing game.

I have been enjoying Smash Up with my wife lately, but you could also go with something more like Pandemic instead. There is always Star Realms and Dominion too. I hear good things about Lord of Waterdeep with the Scoundrels of Skullport expansion for wife/husband play, but I have not played myself yet.
Welcome to the hobby!
Lords of Waterdeep is a very good fantasy-themed board game to start with. It is set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe and uses a game mechanic called "worker placement". Amazon currently has it for about $34.
Dominion is a very popular "deck-building" game that plays with cards only (i.e. no board). It has a loose fantasy-ish theme, but it will be a good introduction to the world of modern gaming. Another deck builder with a more conventional fantasy theme is Ascension: Deckbuilding Game. [Amazon has Dominion for about $29.]

And yes, while not fantasy, Pandemic is one of the greatest cooperative board games ever made (my opinion of course). Definitely worth getting. Amazon has this for about $24.
Happy gaming!
