This reminds me of a great book I read quite some time ago. It was about how some scientist or explorers found during the 70s or 80s or 90s a Russian family of peasants (or the like) living in the Siberian wilderness, completely cut of from the rest of the world. They had no electricity or any modern amenities and I seem to remember that the last time they had any outside contact Russia still had a Tzar. It was absolutely fascinating.
EDIT: I miss-remembered the Tzar bit, it was early Stalinism when they left, but I still think it is a very good book. Like, they had barely heard of WWII (though again it's been... maybe 10 years since I read this book, the details are fuzzy, but I remember it being very fascinating)

I've been trying to get a hold of a book about this family - it's pretty expensive though and I haven't been able to find an electronic copy. My local library does have a few copies available so I'll be checking one out.
How kind of an offer! I have one I would love to have but it's a total longshot. It's called Lost in the Taiga: One Russian Family's Fifty-Year Struggle for Survival and Religious Freedom in the Siberian Wilderness It's normally expensive but its possible they may have gotten a used one. It's a fascinating story about a family who fled to the wilderness to avoid religious persecution... they went SO far from civilization, they tried to farm their own food but at times had to survive on only grass and tree bark. It was a 5 person family living in a small one room homemade cabin with a small woodstove. Two of the children in the family were born in the wilderness. When the family were first contacted by people the children had never seen anyone who was not a family member, they were so scared they dropped to their knees and began to cry. It's an amazing story!
