Then you could just use whatever cheap computer you have lying around that has a pcie slot.
This would give you 120tb in RAID1 (mirrored), so at least losing a drive wouldn't be catastrophic.
You could live dangerously and halve the price and just stripe the drives.
Obviously most of the cost here is in the drives and you just aren't going to find much cheaper than $119 for 5tb.
You say your budget is $7k before drives, but drives ARE the budget for something with this much space. Whatever you are going to use to house/control them honestly doesn't need to cost much more than $1000 if even that. The rest of it will be drive cost. There's probably a larger JBOD enclosure for cheaper instead of having 4 of them.

Know you're trying to help, but that's an external sas card. Not what the OP needs/wants.

Jesus Christ, is there a reason that these start at $3000? You're not going to be running a whole lot of VMs on an i3. Why not an E5 Xeon setup with a DAS or two?

I'm really not familiar with the H220. When we were doing storage research we always used LSI controllers for JBOD. The HP controllers we used were only ever configured for RAID, so a P400 or P410.

From memory, the LSI cards are pretty tolerant of different drive types, and we definitely tested them with consumer grade drives. The HP controllers tended to have problems with non-enterprise rated drives due to the differences in the drive firmware (consumer drives spend a lot more time trying to re-read and repair bad data blocks).
Yeah the hex cores are more expensive, but that one I found wouldn't be out of my budget. I'll certainly look around some more. I'll avoid the X series because this is a 1U server. :) Only so much heat it can dissipate despite sounding like a small jet.
We just moved, so got a whole server room to myself now :D It's right off the garage (under the house style garage) and with the door inside closed, you can barely hear a thing. I'll probably post pics at some point of my whole setup once I'm more situated. Got a ton of VMs to clear out, for example, and some streamlining of our network setup, which is sitting on a bathroom cabinet (that we'll install soon) in our finished basement.
I'll probably avoid the L series this time, especially if the price is the same for a faster chip.

I had meant 2TB regular old sata drives. I had found these (woah I figured out hyperlinking finally) which are whitelabel drives, but I've seen posts on datahoarder and such where people buy 8 or so and none fail within months. Plus people say that if any do die, or even just have relocated sectors, the seller sends a new one and lets you keep the old one. So, with some RaidZ2, I see it as at least even if something goes wrong, it can't go too wrong.
Getting back to NL-SAS drives, the cheapest I could find was this which is a bit out of my price range, since I'll want/need a bunch. It isn't essential that this is up 24/7, so if something reset-chains and takes the array offline, the worst thing would be having to manually online it again, right? Also, I could be wrong, but doesn't ZFS automatically try to online a VDEV if the underlying drives come back? Ex: degraded due to a drive failure, but if I pop a new one in, it should automatically start resilvering and come online again, right?

A fifty-dollar SAS9200-8e? I have to suspect you have a counterfeit HBA right there. Contact LSI/Avago support and ask for some assistance, take high-res pictures of the front and back of the card. They'll help you determine legitimacy and if it's bunk you should get a refund ASAP and use a legit card. A reflashed OEM card like the Dell PERC H200/H310 or IBM M1015 is fine, but don't use knockoffs.
Nothing else in the datasheets for any of the gear should show it as limited to SATA2 speeds. Unless your interposer is mucking things up but that's unlikely.

Everytime I look up this expansion module for the DAS nothing says it is supposed to be 3Gbps.

I guess my real question is, could I use that card in the R320 and connect it with a Lenovo DAS?
I was planning on sticking with LSI. Currently,this is the card that I was leaning towards. I was just curious if anyone had any other suggestions.

When did this I used an old HP prebuilt motherboard that has a PCIe Gen 2 slot. I originally had a case that I had laying around (NZXT 210) before I bough a Norco 3216. An old power supply i had from a previous build (which I'm still using). Purchased the SAS expander from eBay and got all the cables needed. I got the 9200-8e from amazon for $45 bucks but I dont' think the guy knew what he had. All in all when I first built it I was all in for $300 including two WD 3TB Reds.
Since you want to use a Norco Case later on you will want to purchase SAS to Sata breakouts. Now I'm not sure what kind of storage solution your using but I use WS2008R2 with drive pool and just add a drive to the pool when I'm low on space. That way I'm not blowing $1500 on drives for a brand new DAS. I just add it and go.
