This was a birthday gift, but it's still pretty cool.

I used to read to my kid brother a lot. Unfortunately, that's really hard to do when I'm away at college. We made it halfway through a book one spring break, and when I had to leave, he wouldn't read the book with anyone else.

I went to the bookstore and picked out a book I thought he would like (I ended up getting Whales on Stilts by M. T. Anderson), took it home, and spent several hours reading it out loud and recording myself on my compter.

I did every chapter as a seperate file (which meant I started over whenever I messed up badly in the middle of a chapter), added an extra file with a hello, an explanation, and a birthday greeting, burned the files onto a CD, and mailed him the book and accompanying CD.

So even though I wasn't going to be able to see him for another six weeks, he could read the book with me.

It's kind of corny (and possibly a violation of copyright...), but it was probably the most time and effort I've ever put into a gift.

Reminds me of this.
