My recommendation
Although I'd strongly recommend against keeping mace on hand to deal with an unstable employee. First off, whatever you get will create a mist that will harm anyone else the room to varying degrees. So be prepared to be on the hook for any resulting injuries that will cause.
Second, if you miss, or if the individual isn't overly effected, you just waved a red flag at a bull and it will charge you.
If they're so unstable that you feel unsafe, find out who you can talk to get them removed.
Waiting to get attacked and attacking back means you're planning on fighting an employee. There are relatively few ways to fight someone at work and have it not cause lasting harm to your career.
I live on 4th and Blanchard, My girlfriend is consistently hit on by sketchy black guys whenever she walks around who are VERY forward. I'd recommend it to anyone that doesn't feel comfortable with a gun, but still wants to scare someone enough for them to think it's one. Or concerned boyfriends/husbands like me.

Keep in mind, most pepper sprays only have an effective range of about 5 feet. I agree with you on the range subject, but I think it would be a little safer to invest in a mace gun, like this one. It has an effective range of 20 feet.
