It's all down to preference man. I am terrible with pads, so I got a fightstick, it feels more natural to me. Some are crazy good with pad.

If you are going to get a fightstick, I have two recommendations. Ebay and amazon. I got a sf4 madcatz TE on ebay for little under 100$. Also, check out the soul calibur stick on amazon, that thing is always on sale... I bought one of them for 60$. It is a madcatz stick with sanwa parts, but the buttons are wired different than most sticks. Its easy to open it up and swap the button arrangement though.

If you ever play on ps3 also, and are interested in a dual modded stick, you will have to put up some money. Arc8 and qanba sticks are dual modded out the box I believe, if not all of them, some models are. You can dual mod any stick, just gotta buy the parts and make it happen.

Edit: the soul calibur soul edition stick is 99$ brand new on amazon. It is the same as a madcatz TE. It might interest you.

Here is a link to the stick. Soul Calibur stick

Just to give you an idea, this is what I did with my soul calibur stick because I didn't like the look of the stick itself. I'm not into soul calibur. My ex-soul calibur stick

As for the weird button mapping that this stick has compared to other sticks, it is easily fixable in 5 minutes with a phillips screwdriver. Just open the top, pull off the connecters from the buttons and remap them to where you want by plugging them back in. It really is a non issue. If you want a problem free, brand new, quality stick, this is the route to go IMO. Having been that you have never even used a fightstick, the weird button mapping will probably not even be noticed by you because you won't know the actual TE button layout. I'll assist you if it is something that bothers you and we can get it fixed in 5 minutes.

When I first switched to stick, I lost so many matches that I knew I could win if I had used a pad. I just didn't have the muscles in my left hand (wrist and fingers) to coordinate smooth movement. And when executing special moves, I would always push the button with my right hand before motion is complete with my left, so I'd be doing down, down-forward+punch, forward and led no special. The push buttons will be easy to learn. You'll just have to get used keeping your right hand raised above the buttons because the buttons are very, very sensitive. Like the weight of my sleeve would make the buttons activate.

When you first start practicing special motions like qcf+p go slow then gradually speed up. You want to keep your left and right hands in-sync. But also don't be afraid to mash and jerk the shit out of it. It's a tank and can take the abuse. Also, stick with the square-gate, you'll get used to it.

Get any stick with full sanwa parts. These are generally the Tournament Edtion sticks from Madcatz or Hori.

Recently, the Madcatz Soul Calibur V TE has been the cheapest.
It's at $100 now. Has dropped to $70 a few times like during Evo week. $100 is an awesome deal, because it'll last. After 5 years, mine still works great.

Ch-RIST! I didn't even know Razer made an arcade stick, but I'm certainly not surprised they'd try to sell it for 2x what the competition does.

My suggestion would be to get a Mad Catz stick. Same Japanese parts, and it's what almost all the top fighting game players use. You get an Xbox 360 one, it'll be PC compatible, but as a 360 controller. Costs $99. Like this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006EJ38X2

Then at some point, if you want multi-console compatibility, you drop another $40 on a Phreakmodz Cerberus PCB... That's a drop-in modification that'll make it PC(Native)/PS3 compatible as well.

Or you can just go with Amazon, $100 for a brand new stick (albeit the buttons are placed slightly different from standard sf4 layout)

While I can't vouch for the quality of either stick, the Qanba Q1 also looks like a fair option for a good entry-level stick. However, for less money than it would cost to buy replacement Sanwa parts, you could get a MadCatz TE which is pretty much the gold standard of fight sticks.

You could get a Soul Calibur stick for $70 or a SFxT stick for $80.

Having a stick is not necessary to play Street Fighter. You could also get a fightpad for $15.

This seem like a good thread to mention it that the Madcatz SCV stick is currently on sale for 70$ on amazon. It seems like an absolute steal to me considering it has full sanwa parts.

I can't recommend this stick enough. The art may be terrible (a little time and effort can fix that), and the hardware may not be as good as Sanwa parts, but its definately worth $40.

I'm really hard on mine, and I finally managed to make a button stop working after almost a year of owning it. The best part about it is that you can drop in high-quality Sanwa parts when the stock stuff wears out.

And I have absolutely no idea why the Xbox 360 version is $100. You can get a Soul Calibur V stick (I believe that's the TE) on Amazon for that much.

I got this a few days ago and I am very, very satisfied with my purchase.

These are an absolute steal for $100 (even more so if you can find it locally for cheaper as I did) because they use the same components as they do in the TE sticks, which are upwards of $200 on some of them.

The button layout took no more than 15 minutes to get used to, so don't be put off by it if you were used to the American style layout.
