Mary Ann Caws' lengthy introduction to the 1988 edition of Breton's Mad Love gives a good rundown of Dali's conflict with and eventual excommunication from the formal Surrealist school, though heavily weighted in Breton's favor. You can almost certainly find a better text, but it's short and sums the story up neatly without being too dry, and I have the book so it was the first thing I thought of. :)

I think it's ridiculous to say Dali was a shitty painter or not interesting or what the hell ever sbalz was raving about, but he's right that Dali didn't invent or even particularly contribute much to Surrealism, despite being famous for it.
