I went with a ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 1-Person Tent for sleeping with a Camp Solutions Lightweight Self-Inflating Air Sleeping Pad. Had a 40 degree bag/quilt from Walmart since I was traveling in August time frame.

Took this chair that really came in handy Moon Lence Outdoor Ultralight Portable Folding Chairs with Carry Bag Heavy Duty 242lbs Capacity Camping Folding Chairs Beach Chairs

Cooking set I used was 12pcs Camping Cookware Stove Canister Stand Tripod Folding Spork Wine Opener Carabiner Set Bisgear(TM) Outdoor Camping Hiking Backpacking Non-stick Cooking Non-stick Picnic Knife Spoon Dishcloth. It was good enough for the 3 weeks on the road and im still using it to this day.

Seat cushion which was good but I needed something much thicker by the end of the trip MadDog GearComfort Ride Seat Protector

I just put all that into a waterproof 45L bag I had and then shoved my clothes into a backpack on top. Jerry rigged a canvas bag on the side for quick access things like tools and such. The net thing on top of my bags was very very helpful as well. I used these hammock straps to tie everything down on the bike since I could use them again PYS outdoor XL Hammock Straps Heavy Duty 20FT & 40 Loops&100% No Stretch (Set of 2) Fits All Hammocks

Other than that it was miscellaneous stuff...

Height should be your biggest concern.

I'm 5'11", with kinda short legs, too. I couldn't ride this bike if it were any higher. You can get lowering links, and a different seat, and you should be OK - right about where I'm at, but it may never be "like a glove" comfortable.

It will totally get the city job done. Little box on the back, and you're good to go. When they hit potholes, and nearly lose it, you'll float over like nothing. Mine is a daily commuter and a weekend warrior. There is nothing this bike won't do "pretty ok".

Riding is riding. Unless you're trying to keep up with people doing 80+, you'll be just fine. The bike is as much fun as any other bike on the street at <60mph. I've ridden with groups of guys on harleys, groups of older guys on Can-Am and Goldwing trikes, adventure bike groups, groups of kids on dirtbikes, families on atvs, and in giant packs of streetbikes on weekend evenings.

Travelling far distance ... don't do it unless you're comfortable on a bike already. Riding for hours on end can play tricks with your concentration and whatnot. If you must, and you're not that experienced, plan on a 15-20 minute break for every hour riding. Just do it.

Here's some shit that I learned the hard way:

Change the oil/filters before you go, and check the plug. Check your air filter after 1000 miles of highway/trail. Plan your trip to avoid interstate. You will be much more relaxed on smaller highways, and you won't have as many trucks and their drafts to contend with. Calculate your gas mileage at every fillup. Little problems can show up as dropping mileage before they become big problems. Put some flat stop in your tubes. Give the tires a push check before starting every time. Bring rain riding gear, and hope you don't need it. Get a throttle lock. Either a good one or a cheap one. The KLR will vibrate your hands numb, you will need to get your hand off the bars for a bit. Wear a camelback water bag. A good GPS/phone mount that offers visibility without having to look away from the road is really nice when going through unfamiliar towns. Make sure you have a usb charger if you don't have a 12v socket. for your gps/phone on the bike. Carry extra cheap eye protection. One of those ATV seat pads can help if you get a sore ass easily. Don't beeline it to your destination - make a point to include a side-trip up a mountain or something as often as you can.

I think you'll end up liking the bike, and you'll end up going on that "adventure" ride sooner than you think :)

Lanesplitting is as easy as you want it to be, with no panniers. It starts to get hairy above 60, because after that the KLR just doesn't have the instant go that you need to zip through smaller spaces. So at those speeds, you're more like a cruiser bike. But at city speeds, once you've been in the saddle a few months, it feels really small in traffic.

One of these pads for bum comfort, also a re-purposed belt for a grab handle.

Try this...
I use mine for anything over 2 hours of riding and it helps a lot. I want a custom seat eventually but it is low on the list of expenses right now...

I leave the clips in place when it is off so it is easy to pit on and off and the clips are not in the way when off

I can't say for sure but it looks like the standard ATV one that a lot of us have. ~$20 on Amazon. It improves my comfort for sure, but it's still not a great solution if you're uncomfortable on the stock seat.

We like to go geocaching. We sometimes take the motorcycle, but the seat is not the most comfy. This would really help out. Plus, since it's monsoon season, it's waterproof and removable. Should a storm pop up, we could just shake the water off and we're good to go.

Thanks for the fun contest!

get some pannier racks http://www.dirtracks.com/1987-2014-Kawasaki-KLR650-Pannier-Mounting-Rack-0001.htm

Purchase aluminum sheet and have a ball making panniers https://sites.google.com/site/rtwxtz660/alluboxes

or purchase some soft saddle bags.

You can spend so much money on our klr's o.o

Order one of these and have at it. I prefer the bead covers but the air cushion should help you enough to make it to the next state. :)

I just bought one this week from Amazon. Also available at Walmart.

I got a Coleman Maddog seat cover for my Tracer 700. It's quick on and off so can use it just for longer trips if you like.
Took my time between breaks from a couple of hours to doing a 4 hour stretch on my trip to Kintyre a couple of weeks ago.

Who makes the quick disconnects for the rims? That SM stuff is really gonna break the (your) bank. You'd probably get more for your money out of the gearing and suspension.

For the seat I definitely know what you mean. I'm 24 and after a 200+ mi slab day my ass hates me. I'll throw this on for long trips now - http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Comfort-Ride-Seat-Protector/dp/B006JMK7N8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1381759929&sr=8-2&keywords=coleman+seat My gf also appreciates it when we're 2-up'ing

Looks like the Coleman ATV seat cover, which can be found at Walmart, or Amazon for less than 20 bucks.

I have the MadDog GearComfort seat protector
Did 10 hours straight and my legs more sore than arse. Also did a few weeks in the Australian outback with it. It is great, and hasn't been removed since. My bike is ridden hard and put away wet regularly, so far it hasn't got any tears or started fraying. It also doesn't hold to much moisture which surprised me, that said you will end with a slightly wet pants if get rained on... but the KLR is an adventure bike after all.

I’ve had pretty good luck with this atv seat cover:
https://www.amazon.com/MadDog-GearComfort-Ride-Seat-Protector/dp/B006JMK7N8/ref=asc_df_B006JMK7N8/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167152578177&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11427560211102240151&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9001928&hvtargid=pla-305855884069&psc=1

The straps required a bit of easy modification to negotiate the plastics on my gen 2. Iirc, I had to cut the buckles off the middle straps and use a bit of cord to lash then together under the seat. It ends up not being a 2 second take on/off thing like I imagined it would be, but I don’t mind leaving it on all the time.

I’ve also found that what I’m wearing makes a huge difference comfort-wise... any seam stitched into the ass of your pants, you’re going to feel.

I probably have 1-2 hours on my 250 before it gets uncomfortable.

Here's my cheap fix and it does help somewhat.

u/wintyfresh · 1 pointr/DRZ400

My biggest issue with the DRZ off-road is its weight; a KLR650's an additional 80 lbs. Repeatedly picking up a heavy bike will tire you out surprisingly quickly, especially when coupled with difficult terrain. The group I ride with has even implemented a "Don't pick up your own bike" rule to try and minimize this happening.

The DRZ's fine for long rides as long as you don't expect to grossly exceed any speed limits, run appropriate tires (tho out in the desert I regularly do 40 miles of asphalt on knobbies) and sprockets, and do something about the 2x4 like stock seat.

u/HuggyBear79 · 1 pointr/klr650

Its just a seat pad/protector bought it off Amazon. MadDog GearComfort Ride Seat Protector https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006JMK7N8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Zbe.zbZ7S36HS its not waterproof so I hit it up with a waterproofing spray every so often.

u/ss0889 · 1 pointr/bikesgonewild

so for the gsxr im using this padding. ive found the seat is a little bit too hard on my butt. the padding on my butt is sort of misplaced so i tend to sit right on the bone rather than having padding for that area. figured this would help, and i can always throw a folded up towel/rag type thing underneath for added pad.

For the headlight, part of me wants the LSL urban or LSL mt03 kit but that shit is WAY expensive for a headlight. I will probably end up going with something like the Dominator style dual or even single headlight. see here for some different light styles that im talking about

For the coolant reservoir, im going to use the standard aluminum bottle. Ill probably zip tie it to the frame. my bike has a black/white color scheme currently, though its normally black/white/silver under whatever plastidip the previous owner threw on. i was thinking of getting a bottle like this for the coolant.

For the speedo/instrument cluster, my friend said he could rig up a sort of bracket. He's going to get back to me on this, but we'll either have it attached to the front forks or the triple tree. If all else fails (or maybe just in the future), i might grab something like a trailtech vapor or even one of those translogic microdash. But that shit is way too expensive for me to grab right now.

Its not really necessary, but i figure i'm also going to splurge on a spiegler riser bar kit.

So far, its looking like its going to be 400 for the riser, im not going >200 for the headlight and mount, and then thats really about it apart from the 20 dollar seat cushion and the 2 dollar water bottle. hopefully my current guage will look just fine, i really dont want to replace it.

Also, not sure if i want to get a headlight with a wind screen or not. theres those Ascerbis headlights that have a nice dirt bike-like windscreen. i dunno yet.
