Last season's The Promised Neverland is basically your spiritual Successor to Death Note. Games of deep mental deception, crazy schemes of plotting, all with the promise of looming death to anyone who is outmaneuvered. It's dark, it's creepy, it's good. The most successful battle of wits manga to come out since Death Note, AFAIK.

You might also like Made in Abyss, a psychological horror/adventure show about a child who decides to descend into a giant hole that is best compared to Hell. A child who has practically no qualifications to go where she's going, surrounded by people telling her that doing so is tantamount to committing suicide. Matter of fact, a line in the 5th or 6th episode reveals that once she passes a certain death, she has LEGALLY committed suicide and is basically considered dead, since the chances of her returning at that point is so minuscule it's not worth worrying about. Obviously, only good things happen. It's actually GORGEOUS, the background art and settings are fantastic and it's one of the best looking TV Anime this decade. The music is also worth mentioning, as combined with the background art they do a FANTASTIC job of setting the tone/mood as the protagonist explores alien landscapes. It's also Creepy as hell. Highly recommend.
