"Magic: An Occult Primer" by David Conway is one of the best starting places. It is immediately practical, with more than enough of the theory and philosophy to give you a good grounding in the intellectual side of things, and is a great read besides. If you want a comprehensive self-paced lesson plan, you can do no better than Mark Stavish's "Light on the Path".

This book has basically a how to section. It’s intended for beginners. I highly recommend it.
Of course you could do something wrong. But fear is the cage in your mind that you have to overcome in life.
I believe that you can find it online- ebook at most libraries.
