I'm not sure if I understood correctly, but Junk mat is awesome. I play almost all my games on it, and on tournaments everyone who brings a set seems to have it.
Mmhm, like a cheapo folding table. The kind your parents would bring camping. The lip would be at most an inch. The idea is that with that lip, you could rack tiles, dice won't fly out, etc.
Size of the table itself should be big enough that it should fit a junk mat, since that would be exactly what the table is replacing.

Okay, mats: they are called "junk" mats.
Two kinds: mat between two borders that you roll out and then put the other two edges on, and 4-puzzle-piece mat.
roll pro: nice and flat
roll con: will eventually 'stretch out'.
puzzle pro: cheap and cheap to ship
puzzle con: eventually gets fray-y on the piece edges.

I definitely suggest the roll. just don't lift it with tiles on it.

That's what a junk mat is. A plastic ridge fitted onto a mat so that you can make a table lip with a nice padded surface for playing on. When you buy one it comes with both.
Also, they sell specific tables with the lip built in. You can find both on Amazon.
