I have this CD slot magnetic mount and it's the best phone holder I've ever used. When I drove a taxi, it firmly held my phone with an extended battery and a rugged case (so it had significant weight) through all but the worst Michigan potholes.

It fits into the CD slot which I never use. It comes with a metal plate, which I've put inside the phone behind the back cover. This is what holds the phone magnetically to the mount.

I have a short USB cable leading from the charger port to the phone.

I am very happy with it. It holds my phone really securely and doesn't block the screen at all in landscape orientation. It does block it a little in portrait orientation but I don't mind too much.

Overall for $20 I'm very happy, and it's lasted several years.

My magnetic car CD player mount now if they would come out with this and wireless charger in one, I would be set.

I am using this now, and I love that it isn't using the stupid suction cup that inevitably falls down. Unfortunately, it's not a charging mount.

I have been using this case for my last 2 iPhones, and a new one is on its way for my 6+. At $11 it is a steal, and allows you to insert the phone in the protective sheath (that has a belt clip) either face up, or face down for more protection. I run with this case, and can't say enough about it. Plus, when I don't need to use the clip, I just use it with the inside case (it is two parts). The case has a kickstand on the inside case part.

My car had no real workable way to mount my iPhone. In my older car I used a vent clip (which was only fair, and ended up mangling my vent). This device is under $20, and is simply awesome! It inserts into your CD slot, and has a powerful magnetic disk/holder on it. It comes with several high powered magnets that go on your phone. One with adhesive, if your phone is naked, or simply place it under your phone case, which is what I did. The magnets are very strong, and I have never had it bounce off. Honestly, it's cheaper and easier to use something like a Nexus 7 mounted in your car with the Android Auto app. Works exactly the same, non-invasive, and is easier to update.

Granted it's not as integrated, but it's what I have in my 2011 OB. I bought this CD player magnetic mount that holds my Nexus 7 (2013) fine. I do have T-Mobile so I tether at no extra charge to it from my phone, but this whole setup only cost the price of the mount for me and I love it.

This is the setup he's talking about but I've never used it and I don't like how clunky it seems to be, how it's a windshield mount and cannot be used with a case.

This is what I use. Amazon Basics 2.1 Amp Charger with this Mediabridge Coiled USB cable and this InfiniApps Slyde CD Slot Mount.

It's a great setup, that charges quickly. The charger and cable allow for AC power to the phone so it'll charge just as fast as if you were plugged into a wall outlet. Also, the mount is really simple and holds the phone steady with a magnet (you put a piece of metal, which is provided, in your case or stuck to the back of the phone).

I have this in my 2014 wrx and love it. It makes it much harder to use your CD player, but since I have never used the cd player once in favor of bluetooth or the AUX jack, that wasn't a problem for me.

The only downside to this mount is that you need a case for your phone. It comes with two metal plates, a normal one, and one with a sticky back. Just put the metal plate in between your phone and a thin case (the thicker the case the less the magnet will work), or use the sticky backed plate and attach directly to the back of any case. I have a galaxy S5 with one of those rubber inside / hard plastic outer shell cases, and I put the plate between the two layers of the case. Another option is to get a cheap case that is easy to take on and off, then stick the metal plate directly to the case and put the case on only when you are using the phone in the car.

edit: If the cd mount is not your style, they have a dashboard version on their website, which uses a gel suction pad that should stick to any dashboard surface. http://www.infiniappstands.com/

I like my Slyde CD mount way more, doesn't block my vents, instead it blocks my "Compact Disc Player" slot whatever the F that is ;-)

The InfiniApps mounted car holder (CD slot version) doesnt have enough grip. Probably due to the back of the phone not being flat.

I purchased more magnets and will be modding it with more magnets to see if that helps.

It's ok. It works for me because I don't use CD's, so I don't care that the cd slot is take up. It doesn't bounce around too much and holds the phone securely. The negatives are that the phone will be mounted down very low so if you want it for nav it's not easy to see, and it is mostly only an option if you use a case with your phone (unless you use a Nexus 5) because you have to put a metal plate on the case to have it stick. I mean you could put the metal plate on your phone but who wants to do that...

The alternatives aren't too great either. Vent clip ones are not bad and keep things up high closer to your line of sight, but they they also block a vent. Suction cup ones are iffy and I've had very few of them that didn't fall off when it gets either cold or hot. Plus they block part of your view out the windshield. You can get some neat ones with an articulating arm to mount your phone too, but then you have to drill holes somewhere to mount it.

These ones look kind of neat, but also look like they take up some passenger knee space and they're quite expensive (over $100 when you have everything you need).

The last option would be one of these. I actually got my dad one of these to mount his tablet in his car and they work fantastically, however in the 3 the cup holders are so far back I'm not sure how well it would work. Plus, you lose a cup holder when this is installed...

This one looks like it might be a good option though. Clips into the dash seam. It's just a mount plate though, you still need an actual holder to put on it (they sell them, or you can use a suction cup or adhesive tape mount). My only issue with that would be that it's kinda out there and ugly. My cd slot holder is at least not very visible or in the way when not in use.

Check out this instead. I picked this up as my CD player is broken, plus I don't use it anyways since I have Spotify. It's the best $20 I ever spent. The this is amazing (they also make one that clips onto your A/C vent. My brother has that one and loves it).

it's currently one more of expensive mounts (was cheaper when I bought it) but it's held up really, really well. i just put one of the included metal plates inside my case and profit

woes solved

The magnetic mount that comes with this one holds an N5 quite well. It holds mine much better without a case, but it still manages to hold it even with my Ringke slim case on.

The little magnetic disc has a ball style mount receptacle like some GPS mounts so you can remove it and use it with another mount style that doesn't take up your CD slot.
