These two books provided a substantial amount of information as to the history of the practice. Aside from the religiously motivated, it only also occurred in the English speaking world, starting in the late 19th century peaking in the early mid 20th century and only really remains prevalent in the US at this point (aside from religious reasons). In those countries where it became a more common secular practice, the original reason was to prevent, reduce, masturbation which was colloquial described as keeping "clean".

I understand that in your situation you feel it was necessary and you were glad it was done. That is no excuse to condone it, it is NOT an inconsequential, painless surgery.
