This was bothering me, so I posted a TOMT on the book here. The book is called Mathematics and Sex by Clio Cresswell, and the general problem is called the Secretary Problem.

This book claimed that the more aggressive person of EITHER gender ends up with a "higher quality" mate, just by being the initiator/initial risk-taker though.
