I have a Matricom G-Box. It's an Android TV box that runs an app called Kodi, which is able to source a ton of live tv streams, movies and shows. I'm able to stream Golf Channel in HD.

This is the box I started out with and now I currently use an NVIDIA Shield TV Box but that is a much more expensive box. This one is very easy to use, good remote, and I would recommend you get an empty box and not one of those "preloaded" boxes you'll see all of the internet.

Well.. this can be harder than it seems. All fixable if you build it of course... like an OS on a small ARM device or even a PC (usually expensive though).

If you want something fancy, I recommend Kodi (a lot more than a player, but really excels as a player). If you want something that will work against any smart frontend (anything that has a Plex app), use a Plex Media Server on the backend, it will transcode as needed to support the frontend.

Btw, a Roku as a frontend can play some media types off it's USB (if you get one with USB support). The problem with stock frontends is that they only support certain codecs... so it might not work for your friend.

There's some work involved, but Kodi is what I'd use. It gives you a settop like experience. If you don't mind a bit of risk on a prebuilt system, you might try something like: http://www.amazon.com/Matricom-G-Box-Android-Streaming-Media/dp/B00QHLSKOE

Potato quality being less than 240p with dog shit frame rate.
My speed test resulted in 65Mbps download and 37mbps upload.
Prior to buying the Matricom G-Box I had been using the program on my laptop, it worked alright.

Today I unplugged my 1TB external hard drive from the G-box and it seems to be running a lot better, actually able to stream movies with Genesis without much buffering.

I cancelled cable a couple months ago and haven't looked back. Here's my November bill with speed test on my own modem. I run two G-Box Q's and a couple Chromecasts without issue. Football season I use an OTA antenna or the ESPN app on the G-box Q for 1080p without lag.

You can get the same results with an Android Box something like this. http://www.amazon.ca/Matricom-G-Box-Quad-Octo-Android/dp/B00QHLSKOE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452057760&sr=8-1&keywords=g+box

That's the first one I found on Amazon, I'm sure if you search you can find a bunch. They have Kodi on them and depending on what you install on Kodi, you can basically get whatever you want.

Try youtubing Matricom; oh and try youtubing "The Beast Kodi", It's one of the more interesting package addons for Kodi. You may find that it collects what you need in one spot. You'll want unlimited internet though.

Amazon Fire Stick in our bedroom and a normal PC in the living room.

The Fire Stick takes a good bit of tinkering to get exactly as desired, but once you do, it's literally a (tiny) Kodi stick, with the ability to also play games, Youtube and any other Android apps you happen to like.

In the living room, the PC I've got setup, has a graphics card with a HDMI out to my TV. Kodi obviously runs great there too, plus I've got the versatility of Windows.

Yeah, Chromecast stuff has never interested me it's just (slightly) limited in what it can do, because of this most Android stuff frustrates me.

Here's what I'd suggest, if you're not interested in always having the laptop plugged into your TV; grab one of these preconfigured Android TV boxes, they start around $40, and come with a remote control, so once you've got everything setup, it functions like a cable box. They've already got Kodi installed, plus a majority of the latest Add-Ons, so you don't have to spend a bunch of time getting setup.

Here's a couple options, the first being one of the cheaper options, the second a more fully loaded, faster option;

Very helpful, thank you. So a couple follow up questions. 1. I think that's a good idea about not giving them something fully loaded. I havent used it yet, but I was imagining something that had a simple interface like popcorn time, netflix, or hbo go. So out of all the options even if cost is not that much of an issue, you recommend the fire stick kodi? 2. Are you saying, it's probably better to buy the firestick with kodi loaded on ebay then either learn to jailbreak myself or find a friend that can do it? 3. Also, I just saw this with over 3k reviews and the description says it can load any of the extra apps. Not sure what you think? https://www.amazon.com/Matricom-G-Box-Android-Streaming-Media/dp/B00QHLSKOE/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1481774273&sr=8-10&keywords=kodi

I dont know what the exact name of it is, streaming media player or something like that. Its like a little computer where you download an app and from there you can stream a show/movie. I have one like this
