I sterilize my cup in the microwave using steam bags meant for sterilizing baby bottle nipples & such. I feel much more confident using the sterilizing bags over just boiling in the microwave. There are safety & efficacy standards companies are required to meet when selling products for babies. Plus, they are inexpensive, reusable, and a flat bag basically takes up no room to store. I did a little research before buying & this one was the highest rated. Each bag can be reused up to 20 times.
