Is x264 a .mkv file? I have an older network media player Micca 350 that will play anything I throw at it except some of the newer .mkv file types.
The media player has a digital out so the sound quality would depend on the DAC that you would choose. If you would prefer less components you could also buy a Mica EP350 which has a slot for one hard drive. So with a two terabyte drive you would have enough room for around 60,000 FLAC songs (around 30mb per song).
