For the same money as the sound bar plus the HDMI cable, you could go with this setup which would be miles ahead of that, and also easily upgradeable.

Start with this $150 Pioneer receiver. I have one, it's perfect for a basic receiver.

Then add these $90 Micca L/R front speakers.

Use this $150 Dayton subwoofer, or one of the other sizes depending on your room. I have the smaller SUB-800, it's an excellent small sub, i'd've gone bigger, but my wife put the kibosh on that.

Finally, if you decide to space the bookshelves out the way you should, instead of sitting on the edges of the TV stand, add this $70 Micca center channel speaker for a full 3.1 setup. Actually, even if you don't space them out, get the center. It really helps with dialog, especially if you sit off center.

Total: $460, not including shipping. Buy some inexpensive speaker wire similar to the HDMI cable you ordered, just be sure it's solid copper.

You'll have a full 3.1 setup that would handily beat all but the absolute highest end sound bars for audio quality, and is easily upgradeable. You can move the MB42x front speakers to the rear and upgrade the fronts and center, or simply add another pair for 5.1. You can also easily upgrade the subwoofer or receiver.

In addition, if you have any gaming consoles, plus a blu-ray player, a cable box, and possibly an HTPC, or might add one, the receiver has more HDMI inputs than most tvs, making it the logical choice for the command center of your system.

Edited for clarity, additional info.

Okay so it looks like you'll be putting a pair of speakers on either side of the TV, and another in that little cubby under it?

First things first, you should get a 5 channel receiver so you can add speakers as you please. This Denon would be good for that budget.

Next up, let's chat speakers. You said you can go up to $700, so I'm going to recommend some speakers that will take up that budget. The Wavecrest HVL-1 would be perfect for your situation. They're front ported, so putting one in that little cubby wouldn't be as bad as it would be if they were rear ported.

If you won't be doing that, a great option would be the Micca MB42XC. Usually you would get a pair of the MB42X for the L/R and one MB42XC for the center, but since you mentioned it is a bit of an open floor plan, you might want the extra woofers to help you fill the room.

In addition, you'll want a subwoofer. I've got that one and it is decent and should really fill the room with no problem.

I think either of these setups will be a fantastic little 3.1 setup for you, and will be expandable in the future as well.

Let me know if you have any questions about that stuff and I'll be happy to help out.

If I had a $1500 budget, I would recommend the following:

Epson Home Cinema 2150 - $699.00

Micca MB42X - $79.95

Micca MB42X Center - $69.95

Fluance AVBP2 - $119.99

Denon AVR S530BT - $229.00

Silver Ticket 120" Screen - $249.98

This would give you a decent entry level setup. You'll have about 50$ left over for speaker wire. I am be no means an expert but I lurk a lot and I think this would be decent.

What setup: 5.1 , stereo, 2.1?

Assuming 5.1:

$180 Reciever
$110 Subwoofer (easily find $10 promo code online, or its $120)
$90 Fronts
$80 Center (matching)
$40 Rears

So that $500, but it doesn't include speaker wires (get 14 gauge oxygen free), stands/mount, cable (mono coax subwoofer cable), etc. Some of this equipment can be bought for slightly cheaper used on Amazon, so you can shave a few bucks that way.

u/000Destruct0 · 7 pointsr/hometheater

You aren't going to get a decent subwoofer with that kind of budget. The absolute cheapest decent subwoofer will run about $130, that would leave only $120 for 4 satellites and a center channel. No quality at that price. You could leave the Bose garbage for the surrounds and just replace the L/C/R and subwoofer. Even at that trying to shoehorn 3 good speakers into a $120 budget is not likely. For what you want/need this is what I'd do:

Leave the Bose for the surrounds - they aren't that critical.

L/R speakers $90: https://smile.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00E7H8GG2/ref=sr_1_1?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1481331526&sr=1-1&keywords=micca

Subwoofer $130:https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-sub-1200-12-120-watt-powered-subwoofer--300-629

That's a bit over budget but this is a good set of speakers that should be affordable enough. If, after setting up the speakers the Blose are that bad as surrounds the Micca MB42 are $57 a pair.

Can't see you getting anything as good or better without spending a lot more.

u/AverageJoeAudiophile · 6 pointsr/hometheater

You can get the matching center channel or better yet, just get 3 of those and have perfectly matching fronts.

I just noticed they are on sale and free shipping with prime. I might have to get me some now.

u/psycholis · 5 pointsr/hometheater

Here's an HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 receiver that will work for your needs. I would choose these MB42X with the upgraded crossovers compared to the original MB42s as the upgrade provides a big improvement in sound for only $20 more. This is already over your budget but I'll keep going.

From there you can add the matching center and a subwoofer. All told this comes out to $557. The speaker preference means little to me as everyone has different opinions about speakers but I would not skimp on the subwoofer and the one that I chose is IMO the value leader when it comes to subs.

u/Armsc · 5 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Here are some thoughts.

  1. BA is right that you were probably looking at some stereo receivers. You need to find a 5.1+ channel AVR to really give you the option to hook up 5 speakers.

  2. If you just have to have a 5.1 system straight away that Yamaha set will get you up and going. Realize that it's a slight step up from a HTiB speaker set. They are two way speakers and it is a powered sub but they are very small and require the sub to do a good bit of work. My friend had that set and while it did work he was very surprised at what an upgrade did for his system.

  3. I'll also agree with BA that going with less speakers is the way to go. You won't be able to really get the effect of a surround system in a small bedroom. Ok, maybe if you actually put the speakers in the correct locations...but I think you'd be better off going with a nicer 2.0. If you get good speakers now you won't have to upgrade as quick. This will save you money in the long run.

Here is what I would look at if I were you.

AVR - Denon S510BT refurb $170 - Basic 5.1 AVR that is 4k compatible. This should give you some room to grow as it has 3 4k HDMI inputs and 5 total.

    Speakers - Pick one

  • Cambridge Audio SX50 $140 - These speakers are on sale so don't think too much. They are smaller speakers so bass will be on the light side but that will be fixed when you get a sub later down the road.

  • BIC DV62 $120 - These are larger speakers so make sure that you have room. The large size will give you plenty of bass until you can get a sub. You might not even need a sub depending on what you like to listen and what the room sounds like.

  • Micca MB42XC $80ea - Yep two centers turned on their ends. These will sound surprisingly good and should give you a decent amount of bass due to the larger size cab.

  • Pioneer BS-22 $130 - These have a softer tweeter sound but you should be able to adjust the setting to compensate for it. They actually do pretty well on the low end but these are also a decent sized speaker.

    If you wanted a 2.1 I would look at this setup. BIC DV32 $55, Dayton Sub 1000 $120 & a sub cable $10-15

This is a solid system and should be pretty future-proofed with that receiver in the case that you want to upgrade the channels.

If you're will to put in a little work, I think you can build a better sounding set for that price.

Two pairs of the Micca 42MBX for the fronts and surrounds:
http://amzn.com/B00E7H8GG2
-- These speakers earned high praise and recommendation in the audiophile community (particularly AVSForums) for their fantastic sound quality, which got me to purchase them for my own system. Love them dearly!

The matching center channel:
http://amzn.com/B00HHFBEK6

That together is about $300.

You can then use the giftcard for a subwoofer:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/pioneer-subwoofer-black/5086873.p?id=1218610014537&skuId=5086873

A solid receiver:
http://amzn.com/B00ILCS182

Plus all your cables and banana plugs from Monoprice. You might even have some money left over to get an extra pair of the Micca speakers to make it a 7.1.

u/concentus7 · 3 pointsr/hometheater

That would be enough for a budget 3.0 setup. You might be able to squeeze a 3.1 setup, but you would likely want to upgrade your subwoofer eventually.

u/TyGamer125 · 3 pointsr/hometheater

We don't recommend sound bars because they are bad by design. I'd suggest getting 3.0 with a receiver. Here are the settings on the receiver you'll want to adjust: dynamic compression (makes everything closer to the same volume meaning loud explosions won't be as loud and quiet whispers won't be quiet), vocal booster, and if needed boost the center channel volume. Here's a good setup for cheap that should provide really clear dialog:

  • Denon s530bt or Denon s540bt for $150

  • Micca MB42X $80

  • Micca MB42X-C $70

  • 3x Speaker cable with banana plugs $31 (depending on placement you might need longer or shorter cables)

Edit: Then setup is match red on back of speaker to red on back of receiver, HDMI from tv to receiver then go through the quick setup. And if you want to keep it lower profile you could flip the speakers on their side but probably better to just buy some cheap wall mounts and mount them beside the tv since you're supposed to put them equal distance apart as they are from the listening position. Probably have it set up in 30-60 minutes.

Edit 2: encase you were wondering why sound bars are bad
u/appothecary · 3 pointsr/hometheater

For 300 you might be better off buying LCR and a receiver then adding a sub and surrounds later.

You can probably do something like this:

u/umdivx · 3 pointsr/hometheater

> I've come to realize soundbars are the devil

That isn't the complete truth. You have to consider the audience here. Most people here are hard core (for the most part) and that is where the huge anti-soundbar sentiment comes from.

They can be decent, and work way better than built in speakers will. Hell I'm using a soundbar for my master bedroom setup mainly because I didn't want a full surround sound setup there.

> I'm looking to spend $300 as a target, but will consider up to $400 as a limit.

Main problem with this budget is you're not going to get very much. Good receivers (what I'd consider good that is) alone are in the $200+ range.

Like most will point you to Accessories4less and point you to the Denon AVR-S540BT but really it'd be the Denon 730H before the 540.

So $200 for the receiver doesn't leave you much left over for actual good/decent speakers.

But if you must the Micca MB42X's for $79 and the MB42X-C center for $70

That gets you a 3.0 setup with receiver for just under $400

I would love to!

For the amp I am using the SMSL Q5 Pro as linked by /u/Hercusleaze and I am very happy with it. I bought it especially for the optical input and remote control to use with my xbox alongside my PC. A very good feature is a dedicated sub out, really makes adding a sub simple.

If you dont need all the fancy DAC built in I would highly recommend the SMSL SA36A, SA50, or SA98 depending on the power you want (this depends on how loud you want to get and what your speakers need).

For speakers I am using a pair of Micca MB42X-C in 2.0, although I got them for half off. Most people recommend Micca MB42X, a very solid all rounder at a good entry price. I set my brother with the Fluance SX-6 speakers, and he is really happy with them although they are bass heavy.

These options are solid entry level gear, and for myself I havent needed/felt like upgrading further. If you are looking for something a bit higher end I would suggest checking out the /r/Zeos guide lists or make a dedicated thread!

u/ZeosPantera · 2 pointsr/Zeos

Honestly the Yamaha YHT-492OUBL probably isn't the WORST Htib but your Sony receiver is not very good so if you wanted to replace your setup you would have to replace that with it.

Assuming you have a budget roughly the same as the Yamaha setup you can get a very decent 2.0 going that will sound better than the Yamaha for sure. A Refurbished receiver and a set of the Elac B6's and you can add a center, rears and a sub in the future OR you can get a cheaper 5.0 right away with that receiver and two pair of Micca MB42x and the matching center. The Subwoofer is usually the big nut you have to leave out until you can afford to add one. Something just over $100 like the Dayton Sub1000 down the road.

u/BeardedAlbatross · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Here's what I'd consider to be a balanced setup:

Yamaha RX-V381 refurbished for $180 here.

Dayton SUB-1200 subwoofer for $150 here.

Micca MB42X Center channel for $70 here, or save another $20 here.

The Micca MB42X as your left and right speakers for $90 but they are out of stock at the moment. For your surrounds I'd pick up the base MB42 used since they'd run you just $40.

Alternatively sure just go for a decent pair of left and right speakers for now, add a sub down the line and be done with it.

u/muhaski · 2 pointsr/hometheater

Check out this Denon. $10 above your price range. After that I would get the matching Micca center channel

u/MJC12 · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Got it. For TV and movies, I would recommend adding this center channel as there is a great sale on it (this'll put you near $250 with the receiver and bookshelf speakers). There is a better version with a crossover in it here if you want something a little higher quality, although it costs more. This center channel will give your shows/movies clearer dialogue, as a 2.0 setup can sometimes lose that detail.

With your living room open to other rooms, you will have to play with the placement of your speakers to make sure you are getting the best soundstage possible. There are lots of online resources, just google it or use the subreddits search function.

Don’t feel like you have to do it all at once either, if even sub-$500 sounds like a lot. I built my own setup over the course of roughly a year.

Start with a receiver and 2.0. Then add a sub, then a center, then surrounds (or vice-versa).

u/sharkamino · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

The matching left and right speakers for your center are Micca MB42X.

If you didn't get the new X version of the center you can get the upgrade kit from Micca. Crossover Upgrade for Micca MB42/MB42-C Speakers (MKIII).

For a desktop near field listening setup and 70% music, you really don't need a center speaker.

Consider getting a single Micca MB42X-C, upgrade the center you already have if it is not the X version and using them as your left and right speakers vertically.

Subwoofer: What is your room size LxWxH?

For a small room, 10" Infinity Primus PS410 $299 $129.

For a medium sized room, 12" Infinity Primus PS312 $499 $199. Value of around $300 compared to better options over $400.

If that sub is too large for the mobility you want, you could go with this, which is quite a bit smaller.

All that (with the F12) will be around $525.

If you're doing surround, which may limit mobility, I'd throw in a pair of these.

Don't forget some good quality speaker wire and banana plugs make life easier if you want to move it easily.

This and four of these (so two of the product linked) and this is probably as low as this sub would be willing to reccomend. $440 + another $25 or so for cables and such. You could even just start with two speakers up front, add in the center, and then later add in the surrounds to spread the cost out.

That's doable, so a center is still a possibility. Cool. So my shopping cart is Denon AVR-300, Micca MB42X, and Micca MB42X-C Center.

Eventually we will tack on the rears but I think this will be a good start, definitely an upgrade from current very old receiver and big box speakers. Will hunt for some wall mounts for the speakers too. Once we get it and have it set up I'll try to remember to post a photo!

I was thinking about just getting these speakers since they are cheap and im sure will be a huge upgrade for me coming from just regular TV speakers from a 2008 plasma TV.

I would go for the Micca MB42X for the fronts, Micca MB42X-C for the center, Denon receiver, and Dayton subwoofer. Unfortunately wireless rears are a bit complicated... there are adapters but they have mixed reviews. IMO though, a solid 3.1 setup is significantly better than a mediocre soundbar setup. The nice thing is these components will be useful for years to come too -- they'll last much longer than the Vizio soundbar and if something fails you can replace the single failed component, rather than needing to replace everything. You can also upgrade over time and build out the system as needed.

Gotcha. There's a lot of different ways you can go. If it were me on this budget, I'd probably do something like this.

Receiver: Denon AVRS530BT 5.2 Channel Full 4K Ultra HD AV Receiver https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XYD1RZ3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_WoUdBb949YZF4

Bookshelf speakers: Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers With 4-Inch Carbon Fiber Woofer and Silk Dome Tweeter (Black, Pair) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E7H8GG2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_fqUdBbHN3RHX1

Center channel: Micca MB42X-C Center Channel Speaker With Dual 4-Inch Carbon Fiber Woofer and Silk Dome Tweeter (Black, Each) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HHFBEK6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_arUdBb3H52KWX

That would put you slightly over budget, so you could do without the center for the time being. Next month, I'd look into a subwoofer.

Craigslist can also be your friend. But as far as new is concerned, this would sound pretty good for the money.

Sorry for all the questions.. really appreciate your answers, you've given me more detail than anybody I've talked to at the audio/video stores I go into. Can I buy you a beer somehow? :)

I have one final question I think... my wife chose a TV Stand/Media Console to house all this stuff, and I only have 5.67" of height for the center speaker, so unfortunately that rules out the Dayton Audio set, as well as the Pioneer set I brought up earlier.

So I'm looking at one of two options, first this Micca setup:

Micca MB42X for Front L/R and Rear L/R
Micca MB42X-C for Center (5.3 inches tall, fits my needs)
~$330 CAD for the set of 5 speakers, not bad!
https://www.amazon.ca/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00HHFBEK6

(Instead of the MB42X, maybe the RB42? https://www.amazon.ca/Micca-RB42-Reference-Bookshelf-Speaker/dp/B07JC416LG/ Seems better reviewed, would add $120 to the price to do those front and back, or just $60 more to do those in the front and still have MB42X in the rear)

(Another option is just to get 5 MB42X-C's?... Or 3 for the front and 2 MB42X at rear)

or this Polk setup.. only other decently priced one I found with a small center.. but this center is much smaller than the Micca:

Polk Audio TL2 for Center
https://www.amazon.ca/Polk-Audio-Speaker-Center-Channel/dp/B0043M667M
Polk T15 for Front L/R and Rear L/R
https://www.amazon.ca/Polk-Audio-T15-Bookshelf-7-25-Inch/dp/B002RJLHB8
~$458 CAD for the set of 5 speakers

(Another option is the T300 set for $150/pair. Shaves $40 off the overall price, not sure if there's much difference there. https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/polk-audio-polk-audio-t300-100-watt-bookshelf-speakers-pair-t300/10166613 )

I'm not a big fan of the look of the TL2 Bookshelf speakers.. so went for the T15/T300 instead.

Curious if you have any opinions about which to pick.. I'm leaning towards the Micca because they fill the shelves better and the reviews online seem to be decent, and the tiny TL2 center from Polk is... tiny.

To pair with all this I have a Polk Audio PSW10 subwoofer.. which gets alot of hate around here but seems more than powerful enough for my needs. Got it last night and hooked it up and I'm running it at about 10% on the gain dial and it's more than enough for what I need.. will probably piss off my neighbours (semi-detached home) even at that level.

Again, thanks for your help, really appreciate folks like you that take the time to answer threads and help people out with their questions.

EDIT: All the above said.. after listening to a dozen reviews or so on the Micca line-up.. I think I'm leaning towards either:

  1. RB-42 front and back, and MB42X-C center (really just because I can't get the RB-42C in Canada). This sounds like I'd have alot more bass in the RB-42, but they are weak at high volumes. Filling a large room like I'll have these in would be difficult, although most of the time I'm sitting fairly close to the speakers when watching TV, this would only be an issue while listening to music in the room somewhere other than the couch infront of it.

  2. MB42X-C x 5 all around. More power and higher sensitivity and they seem to keep their clean sound at higher volumes. Less bass per speaker.. but I have the sub in the setup so hopefully that helps fill that gap (even though it's a PSW10).

Long post, sorry... rambling a little as I go back and forth between options.
u/RoboTicks · 1 pointr/hometheater

If I were to buy something right now, it would be one of these two things:

  • Amplifier: SMSL SA-36A PRO ($51.99)
  • Receiver: DENON AVR-E300 ($219.99)

Down the road, I will want a center speaker and a sub.

  • Center Speaker: Micca MB42X-C ($79.95)

  • Sub: BIC America F12 ($160? Not listed)

If I buy the amp now to save money, my eventual total will be: $511.93

If I skip the amp and invest in the receiver, my eventual total will be: $459.94

Are these good picks? Am I missing functionality that I don't know about? I think my girlfriend would like an easy way to play Pandora from her phone. (Bluetooth support?)

I can do research all day, but home theater isn't my forte.

P.S. - Is there a specific speaker wire I should purchase? It's unlikely I will be considering rear speakers due to my apartment's layout, so everything should be near the TV which will make it fairly easy to hide the wires.

Thank you for your additional input!
u/Onett199X · 1 pointr/hometheater

> Well you're using REALLY small speakers here man. The speakers you have are meant for surround sound duties, not main left/right speakers.

I totally forgot to say, I bought a center channel speaker last year to help carry some of the burden that was put on the R/L speakers:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HHFBEK6/?coliid=I1QA67FIG0JIAR&colid=5TWSP9F9YVFZ&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

The center channel did help a lot but also seems like the R/L really don't do that much (always depends on which audio mode I select which I don't really want to deal with manually choosing that all the time depending on what media experience I'm having.)

>HDMI ARC is also tied to CEC, and CEC fucks with shit ALL the time. Make sure you have HDMI control disabled in the receiver and you won' t have these issues any more.

Interesting, I'll have to check that out. It'll take some searching through that crappy Marantz UI to find it if it's even there I'm guessing. :D

>Logitech Harmony. Done and done. They are NOT overwhelming, are actually easy to use, shit my kids when they were 2 knew how to use them.

https://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/harmony-express?crid=60

I do like the look of this one. I (and my wife) want a simple remote that looks like our current minimal Samsung TV remote. It looks like you can do all the setup from the app itself so it keeps the remote very simple. Have you read anything about that one specifically?

u/raistlin65 · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

You could get two of these Micca Center channel speakers. And make sure your monitor stands that you buy allow you to raise up the monitors enough to put the speakers underneath. You'll also want to be able to angle them up so they point towards your ears.

https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-C-Channel-Speaker-Tweeter/dp/B00HHFBEK6/

They will also need some kind of amplifier.

u/cstkn · 1 pointr/audiophile

Hey guys,

I'd like to upgrade the sound of the TV inside my bedroom.

They are mostly used for gaming and movies, not so much for music as I have a headphone setup for that on my desktop computer.

My current setup has a PS4, cable box and HTPC all connected to my TV, with the TV outputting from its red and white RCA jacks into an Edifier C3. The main reason I got these speakers was because I wanted to be able to control my volume with a remote control.

My requirements are:

  1. Volume control with a remote, so I guess I need an AVR as my TV has no digital outputs. (Are there any other alternatives?)

  2. Movies and gaming

  3. No surround speakers as I don't have space for them

  4. $300-$500

I've did some reading around the posts and have come up with the following setup:

  • Denon AVR-S510BT link
  • Micca MB42X link
  • Micca MB42X-C link
  • Perhaps add a subwoofer later as a future upgrade

As I'm a complete noob in this whole thing, will this setup work? Will I see a big improvement from my current setup without adding a subwoofer? Any other suggestions? :)

Here are the AVR specs that I got from the user manual.

    Thanks!

I've just been browsing amazon and found a pretty good setup for my budget.

Receiver

Left and right speakers

Center speaker

Rear speakers

Almost 600$ for the entire setup. I was also interested in the Dali Zensor 1 speakers that was recommended to me earlier, but they made the total price go up to almost 900$ I'm still curious if I should go with the Micca MB42X shelf speakers over the Dayton though.

u/Magoo2 · 1 pointr/hometheater

To give some different perspective as someone who worked with a budget much like yours, what I ended up going with was:

  • Receiver: Denon S510BT, $230***
  • L/R: Micca MB42X, $80/pair
  • Center: Micca MB42X-C, $80
  • Rears: Sound Appeal SA-VF6.5S, $60

That comes out to $450, so you can spend the remaining $50 on a mounting solution for your rears, if necessary. I did all my research on Zeos' subreddit.

It's got a center for dialogue, it's 5.0 (so I guess the one clear downside is no subwoofer within budget for you), and it's not a HTiB.

Full disclosure, I did end up upgrading my L/R MB42X's to a pair of MB42X-C's, just because I could then take the MB42X's and put them elsewhere in the house, but that doesn't really change my recommendation of the base setup at all.

***The only caveat I would offer with regards to the setup is to look at the various receivers at this price point to make sure you get the features you would want. For example, from my perspective, a receiver with support ARC would be better and the ability to use banana plugs would be a nice to have (both of which the S510BT doesn't support). They aren't major gripes because you can get around ARC by using optical out from your source, and regular wiring isn't that big a deal, but it's things I didn't realize had to be considered when I started this journey, so I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it here.

Hey Zeos! I want to thank you so much for your guide. I just started looking at making a home theater setup yesterday for the very first time and it was pretty daunting at first. After reading through your posts and several others at /r/hometheater I have it narrowed down to a couple of options and would appreciate some advice on the selections I've made. I apologize for the long post but I want to make sure I make the most informed decisions for my first home theater purchase.

I just purchased the 65" Samsung JS8500 and I have an Xbox One that will be my main bluray player for now with a focus on movies / games.

Through my research last night and going through your suggestions at the top of this thread, I've chosen the Denon AVR-S510BT.

My question is in regards to speakers. Last night I had decided on the Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers with the accompanying Center since it's my first system and I was thinking of trying out something cheaper for an intro setup which would be better than just my TV speakers.

Whenever I get into a new hobby I tend to start thinking of an intro setup and get sucked into the nice expensive parts because I believe in "buy once cry once". I'd hate to get the Micca's and then a year later want to upgrade them to something nicer anyways when I could have just spent a bit more and got something that would have lasted me longer.

edit after more reading and watching your videos I see you recommending the Elacs quite a bit, I know you mentioned they would be great for music and I loved how they sounded, is this the case with movies and games as well? My budget is pretty open if it's for the right items and I can afford the Elac 6.5"s or something in that similar price range like the HTD Level3's (loved that sound demo too) if they would really make the whole setup shine and last me for years to come.

If I do end up choosing more expensive speakers and could only purchase one or the other to start with, would you recommend a Center speaker or a Subwoofer like the BIC America F12?

Thank you so much in advance, I appreciate all the time you've taken to write up these guides and answer questions.

u/sabester24 · 1 pointr/audiophile

I've been using a pair of Micca MB42X's with Micca MB42X-C Center Channel Speaker for my 5.1 setup. No complaints.

However, I've been given a pair of Phantom v2's and a Paradigm CC-170 Center Speaker.

The Paradigm set is probably over a decade old, but since the speakers are bigger, would I experience "enhanced" sound? Basically, I'm wondering if I should swap the well reviewed Micca set for an older, less known, but bigger, Paradigm set. Any input would be appreciated.

u/jefesteeze · 1 pointr/audiophile

Get a basic 5.0 system, then add a sub. This should be good value for music and movies. I'm partial to Denon/Marantz for their musical audio quality, but some other folks on this sub may know a cheaper receiver that still sounds good. The speakers are definitely the best bang for your buck, but you could get higher quality speakers for music if you did a 2.1 instead of surround sound. Based on the 4K TV, I'm assuming you're going to be watching movies/tv more than you listen to music.

A few questions I have:

  • Are the Fluance dedicated rear speakers worth the extra 50 bucks over 4 of the Micca bookshelf speakers?

  • Is the Micca center speaker a recommended speaker? I didn't see it listed in the OP, but I found it while searching through amazon, and figured that matching the front two speakers was a good idea.

  • I was also looking into the Denon E300, but I don't see any advantages over the S500BT - any advice?

  • What other things will I need to complete this system? Some speaker cable for sure, do I need a sub cord or any banana plugs? It doesn't look the S500 uses plugs, but I figured I would ask.

Here's my space. Let me know what you think. As you can tell a while ago when I had Pioneer floorstanding speakers and my setup (with the sofas) wasn't the best since it blocked the left speaker. I didn't want to raise those speakers too high. Would it be wise to hang bookshelf speakers and mount them on the wall by the screen or would that cause the screen to shake from the speakers that I get which may be too powerful?

99.9% of soundbars are hot garbage and waaay overpriced. I suggest a 3.1 setup with one center channel, left and right speakers and a subwoofer. Pick a receiver of your choice, wich can support this setup.

If you really want a soundbar, check out theses soundbars that do not suck: https://www.klipsch.com/products/heritage-theater-bar, https://www.nubert.de/soundbars/567/ (german site)

All the linked products are only recommendations, there are tons of great passive speakers.

u/drnick5 · 1 pointr/hometheater

In my experience, the most important part of your setup is having 3 matching speakers for the front sound stage (left, center and right). The goal here is for all 3 speakers to blend together, so when sound pans back and forth, it sounds the same.

You're best bet might be to replace the front 3 speakers with 3 in the same series.

On a quick look, you could go with These Pioneer front speakers with This Matching center. for a total pric of about $200 for all 3 speakers.

Or for a little less, you could go with these Micca speakers with This matching center for about $160 for all 3.

You could probably sell those 2 Bose front speakers on ebay and make it close to an even swap while boosting your sound quality.

I have a set 7.1 set of TSC/Sapphire speakers. Like these link
They are great. I recently purchase some Micca speakers and I was surprised by how well the Micca speakers did when compared to my TSC bookshelf speakers. They get loud! They are not bass heavy because they do not go very low, but the bass is tight and I did not notice tweeter breakup or high amounts of distortion at high volume.

One of these

Two of pairs of these

For the subwoofer, Craigsist may have something decent at a low price. I like Polk speakers, but avoid their subwoofer. I currently have a Velodyne which I enjoy.

For the receiver, check Best Buy and Frys for sales. I've seen Denon receivers for pretty low in price. So, around $180-$250

If you are wanting a projector, know that lamp will cost plenty when needing to be replaced. I have and LED projector, so it should last. It is an LG and I paid $400. It is okay. The color reproduction can be a bit overwhelming even after calibrated, but I have enjoyed it.

Frys has good deals on projector screens. Do not forget to consider the aspect ratio of the projector.

The speakers you've got are pretty limited. they look like the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 computer speakers on stands. The sub is useless, so you're basically starting from scratch. I've linked what will get you going with what you've got. But long run, if you like having a system, you'll want to upgrade out of those 4 you're starting with.
