I use/prefer the original.

Sucks that they don't make them anymore.

I'm not using a full split yet (my work keyboard is a Natural Elite because I needed a PS/2 keyboard one day and that's what IT had...) but even the fixed split setup is far more ergonomic. Your hands are at a far more natural angle compared to a flat keyboard, and you get really used to keeping your hands on their specific keys, even on non-split keyboards. It took me almost no time to get used to the split layout, so I'm happy.

I'm going to build an ErgoDox this summer (switches and keycaps are ordered, I'm about to put in an order to Mouser...) and see how that goes.

Sure. I think in order to get some pain relief a high priority is mostly to stop typing on bad (read: my laptop) keyboards. I have an old ergonomic keyboard which I actually find more comfortable than my current ergodox layout.

I want to be super-duper clear that I think the ergodox is in theory a beneficial keyboard. Given my current small desk, dining chair and inability to figure out what would actually be pain-free, I usually find myself aching after a long typing session.

On the positive side, I think the ergodox is philosophically a keyboard which is really closely aligned to the way I think. I like the programability and that I don't have to stretch for oddly shaped key chords. I have spent a lot of time thinking about how I type and that effort has paid dividends in efficiency for me over the initial layout. It's also my first mechanical keyboard, which certainly biases my favor towards it.

I'm not sure you're getting your bang for your buck with that keyboard. Try Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite, it has great reviews and is very ergonomic.

I got one of these (New in sealed box) at GW for $5. Whenever I find something seemingly mundane that is listed for a rather high price I'm always intrigued as to why. Any ideas why this keyboard sells (?) for such a high price?

I had the same problem back in the '90s when I was first trying to figure out a reliable way to learn how to type. I tried various teaching programs, and didn't have much luck with them (mostly because they were fucking boring).

Then I bought this. My biggest problem had been that I have large hands, and had extreme difficulty "training" my hands on how to deal with the inner keys - t,y, b, and 6, mostly. By splitting the keyboard, it was easier for me to think about where the keys were and which hand had ownership of them. My ability to type greatly improved afterward.

Typed on one of these (I know you said no Microsoft but I couldn't immediately find one not made by them like this though I'm pretty sure they exist) for the first 5 or 6 years I was employed.

Having to switch back to a straight boring keyboard sucked really bad and I genuinely miss that thing...if I didn't do all of my home computing on a laptop I'd insist on one of those. I don't know if it really kept me from getting carpal tunnel or not. But it was awesome. And ENORMOUS. Which was great, because I have big hands.

I definitely don't recommend the stupid roll-up rubbery ones....got one of those from a yard sale one time for novelty value, and it was genuinely the worst thing I've ever tried to type with. If you properly touch-type quickly without looking, they're a goddamn nightmare. You gotta hit the keys really hard and deliberately. Awful.

Yeah I was thinking a traditional ergo shape like the Microsoft Natural Elite keyboard, except fix the stupid arrow keys and the Insert/Home/PageUp/Down so they are traditional.

I only have 1 keyboard at the moment, Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite connected via the stock PS2 connector and a PS2 extension cable (no adapters used).

Upon inspecting my sticky keys config menu, perhaps "lock modifier keys when pressed twice in a row" is the problem. Changing that, here is my current sticky keys configuration.

Looking at more keyboard settings, perhaps the "hot keys for input languages" is the culprit, so I disabled those.

I will search for keyboard driver now. My current driver is from 2006.

Microsoft Natural Keboard Elite
I know it's made by MS so it's a bit ironic using it with Ubuntu, nevertheless I love these keyboards. Ergonomic and no extra doodad buttons that I never use:

Hi dude. I actually type on an ergonomic keyboard and imo my typing speed has improved, it's an older Microsoft model and it's pretty tactile, which I prefer.

Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite - possibly this one?

I use my 4000 for gaming as well. Heck, my friends don't even understand how I type with it. I think has more to do with not having patience than anything.

Looks like this keyboard they came out with in 2002. I don't buy that it's beneficial. I've been using a regular keyboard for nearly twenty years now and I haven't torn any ligaments. You don't see people clamoring for laptops with split keyboard layouts either.
